    Panasonic 54" Viera TC-54PS14 Plasma 1080p $1199

This is the S1, the entry-level model, slotted below the premium G10 and ultra-premium V10 models. These are the things the G10 has that the S1 doesn't: BTW, this list was copied from Randy Walters at AVS Forum _________________________________________________________ Five Color Temp...

    Panasonic 54" Viera TC-54PS14 Plasma 1080p $1199

Monoprice has a 4x1 powered HDMI switch w/remote for $30. Don't let a shortage of HDMI inputs affect your buying decision for any electronics. Besides, 3 should be enough for almost anyone. 1. Blu ray player or PS3, with internet streaming Netflix, VUDU, etc 2. Satellite or cable...

What 120mm fans should I get?

I try to avoid sleeve bearing fans at all costs; they have the most annoying sound once they start to fail (which can be less than a year in my experience). Fluid bearings (Scythes, Panaflo, etc) or quality ball bearings (San Ace) is the way to go.

Yet another 24" monitor thread - best under $700?

The reason to pick the Planar is if you want the lowest input lag IPS monitor available. If input lag isn't important, get one of the cheaper models listed above, as they will probably have equivalent image quality.

    Diablo 3 placebo needed

NETHACK is your game. 100% random maps, every game, so infinite replayability. No level cap that I know of, although you can 'win' (ascend), but few accomplish that. I came close once, in 100s of hours of play time. It's perma-death with no save games (not without modding). You can save, but...

    P3 Kill A Watt, $20, FS.

Just a warning, it's almost impossible to read the display on this thing unless it's directly lit. If your outlet is behind your desk or something, you need a flashlight just to read the numbers. It's not backlit or anything.

Yet another 24" monitor thread - best under $700?

OP didn't mention watching Blu-ray or other 16:9 content on his PC. I, like many people, watch movies on my TV. If your PC monitor doubles as your home theatre, then indeed, the Planar is not for you.

Yet another 24" monitor thread - best under $700?

Might as well throw the Planar PX2611W in the mix. I paid about $600 for mine after cashback on Ebay, but there might be refurbs available under $500. It's a 25.5" screen though, so you do get some extra real estate over a 24". As you probably saw in the LCD thread, it's a quality IPS panel...

Low-power gaming card that can be softmodded into a workstation card?

Actually, it looks like the 4670 may be softmodded into the FirePro V5700 (a $600 card). I can't seem to find anyone that has actually gotten it to work though (and gotten SolidWorks RealView to enable).

Low-power gaming card that can be softmodded into a workstation card?

Hi, I'm looking for a cheap gaming video card that can be softmodded into its equivalent workstation card (FireGL or Quadro FX series). However, it has to run off the power available in Dell Vostro 200 desktops, so anything that requires a 6 pin PCIE power connector is out. That rules out the...

    Overclocking the 4890?

I'm at 1025 core, 1085 memory. I had to bump the core voltage up to 1.5V to get there. The core and memory stay cool, but the VRMs get up past 100C in Furmark. I'm on water though, so YMMV.

Looking for quiet fans the move a good amount of air

Hard data on all the good fans: XS Fan Tests No need to go off anecdotal observations, everything you need to know is right there. You are interested in the highest CFM point of the 'Low Speed' fans, which corresponds to 12V (no rheobus). Looks like your best bets are the Yate Loons...

    Case for 3x120 radiator

Several flaws with this idea though: 1. If the rear upper fan was an intake, it would be sucking in hot air from the PSU exhaust below it 2. With a 3x120 rad on top, I'm already starved for intake fans (I like to keep positive case pressure for dust build-up reasons). I even installed an...

    Case for 3x120 radiator

Second for the Lian Li A70. I have a 3x120 rad up top, on the top panel daw123 suggested. I installed a 1x120 rad on the rear exhaust, but you could also install a 2x120 in the front intake (I chose a 1x120 in the rear instead for noise and because I didn't want to dump heat INTO the case).

    What's behind Dell's low-end pricing fluctuations?

Late last year and early this year, you could get a Dell Vostro 220 with a 2.8 GHz E7400, 2 GB RAM, Vista Basic, and a 22" LCD for $419. Heck, the monitor alone was worth about half that. You couldn't build a system yourself for even close to that price, assuming you bought the OS license also...

    Overclocking with 8GB RAM

Some people have problems with the UD3R/P and 8 Gigs, although mine works OK. The only weird thing is my RAM timings are stuck at 7-7-7-20, whether I have one stick in there or four. Any attempt to manually set the RAM to its stock timings (5-5-5-15) results in an inability to boot, regardless...

opty 165's selling on ebay auctions for $85+???

Socket 939 was an absolute gem, and there are a lot of people with older socket 939 chips that want a 'cheap' upgrade to the best chip for their motherboard. Think about it, someone could have a FIVE year old motherboard, drop <$100 on an Opteron 165 or something, OC it a bit, and get...

    4890 Overclock

The Rivatuner add-on Voltage Factory, it's very simple. You tell it what voltage to use for what state (idle/load). Then I use ATI Tray Tools to set separate 2D/3D clocks (I couldn't get this feature to work within Rivatuner, the 'Hardware Acceleration' monitor never read anything). When...

    4890 Overclock

My VRMs run around 70C under water, while the core is closer to 40C. This is just running the ATI Tray Tools renderer, not Furmark. Still hot, but people on air are seeing 100C+ I hear. EDIT-I just tried Furmark, and some of the VRMs are hitting 100C even with water cooling! This program is...

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency wants to run military CFD simulations on GPUs

I don't see a company like ANSYS implementing GPU computing in Fluent or CFX. Their business model relies on charging absurd per-core parallelization fees. Really, the slower the code runs, the more money they make. ANSYS isn't a small business anyway, but hopefully some small commercial CFD...

    Should I upgrade from a 4870 512 to a 4890?

    Should I upgrade from a 4870 512 to a 4890?

I did this exact upgrade. With my 512 MB 4870, I couldn't turn on AA in Crysis @1920x1200, with my 4890 1GB, I can run at 2xAA-4xAA and stay above 30 FPS most of the time. In fact, at 4xAA, the 4890 is about 50% faster than my old card. Considering I think Crysis looks awful without AA, I...

    HD 4890 Power Consumption

    HD 4890 Power Consumption

Yeah, I saw XBitlabs measures the voltage drop across resistors on each of the PSU lines. It doesn't get more direct than that. There are a lot more variables with system power consumption. Basically, I'm just hoping Xbitlabs is correct :D I'm going to put my 4890 under water soon, so low...

    HD 4890 Power Consumption

So, I've been reading some 4890 reviews, and it's pretty clear that it is neck and neck with the GTX 285 (which is $100+ more expensive) in performance, with potentially more overclocking headroom. What's not clear is how the cards compare power consumption-wise. X Bit Lab's Review has the...

    LC a 4890

I'll be impressed if that Powercolor card is actually $339, because that's a decent deal. I bet it's really $399. The BFG water-cooled GTX 285 is like $480. You can get a 4890 for $200ish, and the (good) full coverage water blocks will be $100-$120. After shipping, you are looking at $320+...

    My new (first) water setup

It isn't clear in the picture, but the PSU sits on a bracket in the bottom of the case, so there is at least an inch under the PSU for the fan to draw in case air. The bottom of the case isn't even vented, so even if I did have feet, it wouldn't draw any outside air.
