Review Ryzen 3700x Memory speed scaling

FYI, I've been doing my own memory tuning, and at any speed there is a pretty decent performance improvement in CPU limited scenarios by improving subtimings. I can't test many games for this, as my bench system has a lowly HD7850 in it right now, so getting into CPU limited scenarios in games...

Discussion Ryzen 3000 series benchmark thread ** Open **

Oh man, I just got used to MW2 not referring to MechWarrior 2. Now we have the same franchise coming full circle? BFV was the last Battlefield game I played seriously. Battlefield Vietnam, that is.

Discussion Ryzen 3000 series benchmark thread ** Open **

Well, AMD IMC has not exactly been the high point of past AMD architectures. They (significantly) improved the controller at the same time they moved it off-die. Pretty sure there was a good deal of headroom to be had to more than make up for the latency penalty of moving it.

Discussion Ryzen 3000 series benchmark thread ** Open **

By the time it's a bottleneck I can feel, I think the $400 or so saved by going with a 3600 platform vs a 9900k platform will probably pay for an entire new platform that will eliminate a bottleneck. Yes, there is merit in exploring how far from the limit we are... and when we do those tests...

Discussion What would you say to this person?

    1) It depends on whether he asked for my advice, or if he asked to help build his new computer. If the former, then the response is "cool, GL, TTYL." If the latter it's "cool, this is the board and RAM I'd pair with that" 2) Regardless of #1, and well, regardless of anything, the answer...

i7-8086k @5.0 GHZ vs 3600X/3700X which is better for gaming?

It may not be better, but it should at least be at the point where it's close enough that other factors come into play (AM4 being a more flexible platform, power/heat, overall value, just the fact that I can build an AMD platform again after all these years and not feel like I'm cutting myself...

    Stream Sniping

It doesn't affect me either way, but I do watch (more like listen to) a fair amount of Twitch because I enjoy having it on in the car instead of the radio. The big streamers get sniped A LOT. Like in PUBG, they will drop in and be looting a building and some asshat who couldn't possibly know...

The Long Dark Official Release Aug 1st

This is different from the way the game worked previously, but if you go to the story / quest section it actually tells you that you need to prepare the rose hips from the crafting menu. This is more of a problem for the people who played in early access and who are used to how it worked before...

I think i just discovered that i like single player games better with the sound off

Years ago I played this hover / rocket car racing game Wipeout XL without sound in college. Always played it with The Prodigy "Music from a Jilted Generation" CD in in the CD player. Music was well suited to that kind of game. Some time later I played the CD by itself on the stereo and my...

The Long Dark Official Release Aug 1st

Rushed? It's been in Early Access since 2014 and they moved the story mode release date several times. I don't think they're afraid to move the release date in order to polish things up. Not sure what needs sorted out. There was some grumbling in the latest update because there was a UI...

The Long Dark Official Release Aug 1st

Bought this game over a year ago in early access. It is a very good game. I consider the mechanics to be very much like roguelikes. Obviously not in the graphics department, the graphics are pretty nice... not Rise of the Tomb Raider quality, but pretty nice. More in the fact that the...

    What headset should i get?

I firmly believe the best option is an external DAC and real headphones. There is too much garbage that sells just because it's labeled as a "gaming headset" and it's so difficult to sift through and find the real gems. But things like Philips SHP9500, M40x or Senn 558 are known quantities and...

    Thoughts on games with permadeath?

Kinda resurrecting a thread here, but since Darkest Dungeon went on sale today, I was realizing that I love permadeath games. Back in the day I played a lot of roguelikes (Moria, Nethack, Angband and ADOM) I save scummed a lot and thought there was no way people actually played these and won...

    Hearthstone

I opened 150 packs and the meta is very refreshing. It does seem there was a higher threshold than in the past, but for someone meeting that threshold, this is the most fun I've had since the week following Old Gods release. I had a bunch of gold saved up and purchased the $50 bundle. My...

Do CPUs just go bad and overheat?

It means that in the past, an 8 year old CPU could not even be considered to power a modern computer, so we didn't have to be as concerned about things like thermal paste drying out and dust buildup and such. because after x years, the CPU would be completely obsolete due to advancement of...

Do CPUs just go bad and overheat?

Had a friend lose a sandy bridge low power i5 last year due to overheating. It was a retail custom built system in a fanless ITX case. Don't know how long it had been riding throttle temp, but it eventually started causing issues. It couldn't be re-booted warm. You'd have to turn it off, let...

    Hearthstone

    1) the twitter post from Brode says the golden will take priority. It's not the only confirmation. 2) even if it didn't your way makes 1200 LESS DUST than just keeping your normal. You don't need to DE what you have, you just get 1600 dust by not ever DEing or crafting anything, your math ends...

You get full crafting dust value for your "best" card. If you have a regular and golden, they'll give you dust for the golden. https://twitter.com/bdbrode/status/832304105624178688 So if you have a regular Rag, you'll get 1600 If you have a regular and golden Rag, you'll get 3200 It costs...

    Hearthstone

Your math is off. It's really simple: If you have the non-golden legendary card and do nothing, you'll get +1600 dust If you craft golden, then -3200 to craft, +3200 refund since the refund will apply to the golden and not the non-golden (at this point you're at net zero). Then you dust the...

    Hearthstone

It depends. You can use the dust to craft Grom or Edwin, for example. You can also choose to disenchant cards that move to wild, which F2P players kind of need to do to stay relevant. I don't think the changes are being done as a money grab. I think they're being done because the dedicated...

    Hearthstone

And they're giving you the dust back for free so you can craft something relevant. Not just giving full disenchant value, but straight up giving you the full disenchant dust and you can keep the cards that move to hall of fame... How is this seen as a problem?

    Hearthstone

Well... On one hand, it will be a little more expensive per year. I make pretty much every meta deck with about 120 packs per expansion. If you play to complete every daily and get a few 10g for 3 wins and such, you end up with around 500g a week or about 110 packs per expansion and paying for...

Two dual-channel kits for quad-channel: optimal?

Quad channel is more demanding on the memory controller. It will work, but they may or may not reach their dual channel rated speed / timing / voltage in quad config. You need to do stability testing to ensure you are good to go. It's not the memory in this case, it's the capability of the...

    M8PE extremely slow writes

It was the buffer flushing thing. After turning that off, it benchmarks as I would have expected. Faster than my SATA drive, but not as fast as reviews because the z97 m.2 bandwidth is not full x4 PCIe. I will turn it back on for normal operation, but at least I know now that nothing is...

    M8PE extremely slow writes

Yeah. the M.2 slot is not full x4 speed. I know this. That's not the issue. Look at the 4k random writes... 2.8 MB/s? My SATA SSD is almost 50 times faster. The slot is not full x4 speed, but it should still be quite a bit faster than a middle of the road SATA SSD. We aren't talking about...

DX12 / Vulkan on a FX 8350 and Fury Nano [PCGamesHardware / PCGH]

Vulkan and DX12 are basically ways of optimizing CPU usage in graphics intensive applications. This means that a typical power machine with an i7 and maybe even overclocked will see little benefit, since they are already not very constrained by CPU performance, but the benefit will increase on...

    Worst GPUs of All Time?

ViRge was definitely a disappointment for many. Most people who bought one bought it because it was a 3D card, but it was the kind of card that supported features only to be able to say on the box it supported them (I call them "checkbox" features). People who did research knew it wasn't a...

    Worst GPUs of All Time?

I had a 4850 and once I added a heatsink to the VRMs it was a MONSTER overclocker. I have no remembrance of how it was stock, but it was a really good value for a modder / overclocker. I don't remember exact numbers or anything, but that card was fast enough that I was pretty comfortable until...

Not really planning on it, but I can see why they did it. Some people will be REALLY into it, and those people who will be are pretty important to Hearthstone. I like that different Brawls cater to different people (some pre-built decks, which help those without much of a collection, some...

[WCC] AMD Rolling Out New Polaris GPU Revisions With 50% Better Perf/Watt

Are people confused over what 50% means? A 100% improvement is half the power consumption at the same performance. 50% improvement is 2/3rds the power consumption at the same performance (1/1.5 ==> 2/3). This is not outside the realm of physical possibility, as this would actually bring the...

[Eurogamer] GTX 1060: 3 GB vs 6 GB

Yes, as someone who hasn't bought yet, the 4GB 470 is looking most attractive to me since I didn't get a 4 GB 480. To be honest as a GTX760 owner, I'm really hesitant on the long term viability of the 1060 given the differences we're seeing between AMD and nVidia on the DX12 / Vulkan...

[Eurogamer] GTX 1060: 3 GB vs 6 GB

I agree with this. Also, in my own experience, texture hitching does not always show up as a hit to FPS. It depends on the application. I have had many cases where I had extremely noticeable texture hitching literally unplayable with hundreds of milliseconds of hitching and my min FPS shows...

[Eurogamer] GTX 1060: 3 GB vs 6 GB

I would argue that the usable window is not as different. Maybe the 1060 3GB has a little more runway, but not a whole lot. I think a better argument is that this kind of 'sale' gamer is likely less influenced by the texture quality, which is the primary visual quality feature affected by VRAM.
