VIA/Cyrix C3 what is it good for ?

For those who feel that 600 MHz is the sweet-spot, the question could be rephrased for the P4 2.2GHz: "I am curious for other than [high] power consumption, [high] heat, [high] cost what are the advantages if any about using one of these . It seems to me a [poor] choice for a budget desktop...

    P3 Processor Security Patch/Utility

Hummmm...interesting, when my Abit m/b is running a P3 the BIOS has an entry called "Processor Number Feature" (enable/disable). When it is running a Via C3, that BIOS entry does not appear at all. I guess I lucked out, but anyone who has an early m/b won't be so lucky and might be looking for...

    P3 Processor Security Patch/Utility

Remember when the P3's first came out in 1999 and there was a public uproar about Intel's tracking of the processor ID in the interest of security and the violation of our right to privacy? Intel issued a small patch or utility to turn off the tattle-tale "feature". Can't seem to locate that...

CPU temp off the charts with Zalman

Welcome. Question 1: Not all m/b monitor software is accurate. Three different monitors installed on a system can give 3 different readings. Go by the temperature reported in the BIOS, or the monitor supplied by your m/b manufacturer. Even a m/b's thermocouple calibration curve can be off by...

Who's the most FAMOUS person you've ever met?

Walter Knott (Knott's Berry Farm) was wondering around the grounds very early one morning (as he always did). Discussed the reasons for putting up a fence around parts of the park in order to keep it a safe place for families. During that period the Hippies were begining to stay overnight and...

    P4 without fan. Possible?

The P4-1.6A's power consumption is in the 32W range which would be dang hot without active cooling. The folks at Silent-PC forum kinda lean towards the Zalman flower HS with adjustable fan speed gizmo from SiliconeAcoustics

    C3's (Tualatin Celeries) & cooling

According to here, the Cel-1.0A PGA (Tualatin) puts out 27.8W Max.Power Dissipation - wayyyy to much for HS only unless using alternative cooling with case fan(s) such as blowhole or ducting.

    Software DVD program question

Read WinDVD's EULA - it gives them the ability to collect data on you and your equipment to the hilt!!! PowerDVD may have something very similar during setup when it monkeys with your IE browser. DirectDVD (shareware) has no such spyware-speak in their EULA. As always, read first!

I need some CPU advice, Celeron or Cyrix 3?

The primary benefit of the C3 is its low power consumption, ~11W using a HS only. The Celly draws ~22W and will require a HSF, but will out perform the C3 hands-down. If performance, rather than silence is the requirement, go with the Celly.

Auric..I agree, with the exception of the "...thin aluminum fins" part. See Laminar Flow The jury might still be out on the fin spacing factor with copper bases.

What is the BEST PASSIVE heatsink for a celeron 800. i.e w/o fan

SiliconeAcoustics and AllElectronics The Celery 800's maximum power consumption is around 20W. You should use a case fan to keep the temps manageable.

Depends on what apps you'll be using: a. gen'l purpose, surfing, word processing, light gaming - Via C3-866 b. DVD, photoshop, CAD - Cel 600-800 c. gaming - underclocked P3-900 (maybe)

    VIA's C3 Processor

SV-24: cute - yes, small - yes, value - yes, quiet - no!! The noise complaint centers around the fan in the power supply. You might want to visit the SV-24 thread at SilentPC Otherwise, Silicon Acoustics has the C3's (thx to TheOverVolter).

    newer Cyrix chips - performance?

The C3-733 Sammuel2's power consumption is 10.3Watts, actually 1W LESS than the C3-800 Sammuel2. The HSF statement is printed on all C3 speed grades more as a c-y-a statement when running max load during the summer in Death Valley. An Alpha passive HS from Silicone Acoustics or All Electronics...

The 933 isn't available in the US yet. AxionTech do a search on their page for "Cyrix". They have the 800's. SiliconeAcoustics The best source for 866's. They also have the Alpha passive HS. Another source for an excellent passive HS is All Electronics Check your clearance on the SV24, these...

May be old news, but located Via C3 866Mhz in USA and in stock

I wouldn't bet on a BX honeymoon unless those older (ummm senior) boards can get down to 1.35v core voltages. Btw, the 866's power consumption is 9.6Watts max, and 5.6Watts with typical apps, which is about the same or less power consumption as the ol' socket 5/7 CPU's.Passive heatsinks are...

May be old news, but located Via C3 866Mhz in USA and in stock

Panda...the 13u spec sheet says the multiplier can be over-ridden in the BIOS "...for testing and debuging purposes". But, wouldn't overclocking a C3 be kinda like taking a Yugo to the races? The C3's target is value and low cost. Anyway, to each their own.

May be old news, but located Via C3 866Mhz in USA and in stock

Here's Via's verified m/b list. Linky They do not differentiate between 130 and 150 nanometer flavors so its a safe bet that it will work as long as the BIOS is current.

    Via C3 passive heatsink located

Umm..not so strange considering that the C3 consumes 11 watts max, and typically runs at just 6 watts. A passive HS on CPU's that are now consuming over 60 watts would require a HS the size of a shoe box, or larger (or be able to operate at white-hot temps)!!! For comparative purposes, my temps...
