Audigy 2 > Creative X-fi xtreme gamer/audio

Get Logitech on the line and get a replacement. As far as it comes to replacements they are the best out there. My MX1000 started having issues with the right click button and they promptly sent me out a new one.

Maxtor drive failure imminent?

Maxtor and M.T.B.F. ,Mean Time Between Failure, are not things that go together very well. Of the two Maxtor HDD's I have had they didn't last more then six months. I would get a new HD and dump all the data from the Maxtor onto it.

It depends on your taste. Everyone likes different game play. Especially with console shooters. They vary as much as they can from the competition to make their experience unique. On PCs it's the same mechanics over and over again because it works.
