it seems like alot for us cause it's simple work, but the expense is par for the course. when you don't have the knowledge, you have to pay for the work. don't forget about the bill from the mechanic or the contractor - their jobs are easy to them like ours are to us but that doesn't stop them...
on alot of current drives, master actually means master with something else as slave. if you're running the drive as single (the only thing on the chain), you can just remove the jumper or turn in sideways (horizontal)

before assuming the memory is bad, make sure it's set up in bios correctly. memory will fail when it's run too fast or at incorrect timings. make sure you know your timings, as spd isn't always correct.
