My first day working in a trauma hospital emergency room

Actually, the old rule was...there was no rule. We used to take call from 6am Friday to 6pm Monday as second year surgery residents so we could get some weekends off. My wife used to clock my weekly hours, and as an intern, the average was 110, max 130. The new rule is no more than 30 hours...

Just test drove 3 small SUVs'....

I own a 2001 CR-V: think of it as a Civic with a pseudo-SUV top, which it really is. It drives like a sedan but the full-time AWD (no super-low gear, however) is a big winner here in Colorado. I've yet to get stuck in snow, but then again, I don't take it off-road hardly ever. I test-drove...

Hmm... Stupid question?

We can extract oxygen from "breathed water," but just not enough to keep oxygenated because (1) lungs are much less efficient than gills and (2) there is much less dissolved oxygen in [standing] water than there is in air. Look here.

Hmm... Stupid question?

I'm a surgery resident who is returning to the hospital (July 1) to finish the last two years of training (I've spent the last two years in the lab). Watch out, world! Yet another reason not to be sick in July ;) As far as DIC is concerned, it is considered to be a hyperinflammatory state...

Hmm... Stupid question?

I forgot one interesting hypothetical. As DrPizza mentioned, the premise is that oxygen is liquid at room temperature (not freezing anything). If so, density of oxygen would be much higher than anything in the [gaseous] atmosphere. Supposing that humans still wouldn't be able to breathe...

My wife just told me about the most depressing thing I've heard in a while...

In my mind, I'm not sure there is much that a person could do to deserve a 90% burn. Aside from the fact that mortality is nearly 100%, it's one of the most horrible ways to go through life, let alone die from it.

Can a COM port be used as a voltmeter?

If you were to use an RC circuit, wouldn't you need a separate "sync" signal to tell the machine when the input voltage was applied? Also, I'm not sure how you could measure a voltage that was LESS than the threshold voltage for the data pin.

My first post...hopefully I won't sound too stupid. 1. You could definitely get oxygen into your bloodstream. There would be a simple diffusion across the lung (alveolar) capillary membrane. You get a similar (but lesser) effect from the perfluorocarbon liquids that are being tested for...
