And it worked. I mostly needed encouragement, or someone else to blame than myself!
Have a happy holidays and thank you for the assistance.
Cheers,
Daniel
I guess I just wanted to make sure I am doing it right before I attempt a flash.
I set up a USB stick with the 'HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool', made it bootable, and then put the latest BIOS (v 1.17). So, I guess my question is. Is it ok to jump from v1.10 to v1.17?
Thanks!
Right now I am thinking making a bootable USB hard drive, as instructed here...
http://www.theraptorpit.com/forum/index.php?/topic/2628-abit-bios-flashing-guide-step-by-step/
and then installing following the readme instructions in the BIOS

Current OS: Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
Abit AB9 QuadGT (Intel965+ICH8) BIOS v 1.10, 7/18/2007
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield, Socket 775 LGA
XFX 8800 GTS
4 GB Ram PC-5300 (333 MHz)
Thermaltake TR2-550 (550W)
That is pretty much all that is in the case...
I decided to upgrade my dad's computer hard drive. We built the computer about 5 years ago and it is starting to get sluggish. So I bought him an Intel 330 240 SSD.
Before attempting to install Windows 8 Pro, I am curious if I should update the BIOS. It appears there have been many updates...
Thank you for the help everyone. I went ahead and purchased everything. The total came out to be $1081.21. Then after a $35 for promotional credit and $35 for MIR the total was $1011.21. I ended up getting the ASUS GeForce GTX 670-DC2-2GD5 on Amazon from Tiger Direct for 429.99 + $7 shipping. I...
I chose it because of the 4 x SATA 6Gb/s and the 4 x USB 3.0. I tend to get a little connect happy. So the more options I have the better.
I plan on eventually getting two SATA 6Gb/s Hard Drives and one of the SATA 6 Gb/s will be taken up by the Samsung 830 (SATAIII...same thing right?). I...
I like the IPS monitors because I like to do a small amount of photo editing in Lightroom. Of course, to really get the most out of the IPS panel I would also have to calibrate it. So I can stay satisfied with what I have at the moment.
Oh. Newegg is having a sale on monitors. A Dell UltraSharp U2711 IPS-Panel Black 27" is $750.
Hmmm...
I have always been conflicted whether or not to go for a 24" or 27" monitor for my home desktop. I guess one of the main issues would be over time as games require more power to push them to...
1. I meant Samsung 830. Thank you. I know it isn't enough. I additional hard drives right now. I'll likely grab a pair of 1 or 2 TB drives in the near future.
2. I switch out Power Supply to the Seasonic.
3. I switched out the Gskill over to the Samsung 8 GB that mfenn suggests in his post...
Oh, anyone have any recommendations for a webcam? It doesn't have to fit within the budget. But I keep forgetting that I should get one. I would like to not have to break out my laptop every time I want to video chat.
To bad it isn't eligible for Amazon Prime. The $9 shipping increases the price up to ~$99. And TX650 is in the end ~$105 with shipping.
Does the ZS offer energy savings?
So I have mostly taken advice from mfenn’s post and a few others asking for advice. But I am just slightly hesitant in case I am missing something. It would be nice if this computer could get me through roughly the next 4-5 years with minor tweaks. I realize toward the end things will get...
Hello Anandtech tax gurus,
This is the first time since I started doing my taxes that things started getting a bit complicated. I got married and moved to a different state. My wife and I are going for graduate degrees in separate states. I am in Oregon and she is in Ohio. My first question...
When I select the Diagnose option under Local Area Connection i get the message..
Cannot communicate with DNS server(66.214.48.27)
Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response.
Not sure what I can do to repair this...
I am about as updated as can be!
I am finding a lot of people having the same problem on different forums. And it appears their post goes un answered or they aren't able to find a fix for it.
I have tried System Restore points from two different times that I think were before the red X appeared and both times the restore point has failed to load. Claiming that there was an unspecified error that occured.
Also when I create other profiles and attempt to open Internet Explorer, the...
Downloaded it and attempted to run it but I get this error message from their servers..

Sorry, was gone for the weekend.
But I am using both wireless and onboard LAN. It doesn't matter which one I am using the connection box still has a red X over it.
And I don't think my computer is infected. Kaspersky has been installed since I did a clean install a few weeks ago.
My internet works fine but my computer doesn't seem to think so. When I place the pointer over the two little computer icons it claims:
Connection Status: Unknown
No such interface supported
I also hit the Diagnose and Repair button and it claims "Windows did not find any problems with...
Well I ran spybot and with plugins from that application I could search for rootkits and nothing was detected. But then I remembered that around the time that all this started happening I had installed the game Painkiller. Which I thought I remembered had some kind of rootkit attached to it and...
Ok so I cleaned up the pagefile.sys. Or at least i think i did. I downloaded and ran AVG. But for some reason the rootkit detector doesn't come with any of their trial software. But no spyware or viruses were found.
So I grabbed another hard drive and installed Vista. And one of the first...
Here is the error I receive after a BSOD due to the realtek drivers. Not sure what information is useful in this.
I am assuming that i should defrag my pagefile.sys. I am looking into doing that now. There doesn't appear to be a straight forward way of doing this.
Problem signature...
Finished the Antivirus scan. And nothing came up.
here is the log...

AnyDVD is has been gone for a week or so. And I have installed the Vista realtek x64 drivers and from realteks website. And both appear to crash on me.
I ran NOD32 antivirus and as of right now it is at 57% and hasn't found any viruses. It is taking quite a while.
Overview of the problem
The basic problem is that my CPU is too easily overloaded. When i am working in Adobe AI and move simple text around my computer slows down to a halt and it takes a few seconds for the program to move the text to its new location. Or when I open Google Earth my CPU again...
Wow. I entered the service tag on Dells webpage and it appears he has service till 2010.
It appears this is the way to go for this one. Not sure why I didn't look this up before.
I'm not sure why I forgot to mention this but, the battery in the M170 had failed a while ago and he has been using AC since.
Do you think Dell would still send him a new battery along with a new hard drive? Though this could be rather difficult since he is not the original owner. He may...
Ok. After putting the drive into a USB enclosure on a different machine with WINXP, the drive began to spin but made this distinct click/clack sound that reverberated throughout the entire drive. I assume this is not normal for a drive to do. It felt as if the drive was lopsided.
So I would...
It appears that Dell does offer drivers for Vista 32-bit .
But I will pick up an enclosure so I can test the drive later on today.
So if it is the motherboard, what can one do with a M170 that has a dead mother board?
