    Well, I took the card out of the slot, and then I noticed a little white lever at the end. Apparently the card only goes in if the lever is pushed down, so that done, I put the card back in, as hard as I could without damaging the board, and tried again, but no go, still no POST... :(

    OK, I'll give it a shot. I also read that turning off the powerstrip to everything, not just powering things down and unplugging them, helps remove surges in the cables, so just tried that too.

    Were you turning the volume up or down physically on the speakers or from some control panel in windows? Sometimes if you do it from in windows too high, such as with winamp, putting the equalizer bar all the way on the left beyond 10 decibels or so, it does that static when you raise it too...
