    My potential rig

Like Mik3y said, either processor is fine because, while the Athlon would be better for games, you're using it just as much for encoding, etc, which is where a Pentium would be slightly better. In the end, it'll boil down to price and personal preference, because it'll be at least a year and a...

    My Rig, Need Opinions/Suggestions

You've got a CD-RW drive on there, as well as a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive. You only need the combo drive.

    Configuring 5.1 Surround sound

Just by looking at your post, unless it's a typo, I would think that it's not working because you're trying to configure 5.1 speakers to 6 channel sound. If you match the speakers to the channel type, it might work, but I'm just guessing here.

    Gaming on AMD

Well, I wouldn't be building the P4 system, Dell would be, so I don't need to buy the parts seperately. And the Dell uses Dual drives, like two seperate ones. Yeah, I need MSOffice. My school assignments have to follow a certain format, and it saves so much time setting it up in Office. Plus...

    Gaming on AMD

Newegg.com is out. These are Canadian prices, and newegg.com does NOT ship to Canada, I've checked. Also that Mwave.com also doesn't ship outside the US. Out of luck there. I'd be buying from what seems to be the Canadian equivalent to newegg, www.ncix.com. Most of the prices are similar to...

    Gaming on AMD

Well, I probably should've mentioned that the P4 is a Dell system. 2.8C. And the Athlon 64 does come with some better parts, although the sound card is an Audigy 2 ZS and the P4 uses standard Audigy 2. Here are the two systems. The P4 I'll just list final price (after taxes and shipping), and...

    Gaming on AMD

See, that's the thing. I'm debating between an Intel system and an AMD system, and after all the necessities like a monitor, speakers, etc., the AMD system is more money. I've got a blueprint for an AMD system, and it's the same as the Intel, yet the AMD doesn't have a monitor. For a decent one...

    Gaming on AMD

This is sort of a follow up to my previous post about system building. I know that the Athlons give better performance for games over P4s, in general. However, when I'd read comparisons, games like Farcry were usually used, and other big time shooters like Unreal Tournament and the upcoming Doom...

    PC Building - Totally Lost

Yeah, the total prices I listed are after shipping and taxes. Dell has $10 shipping, but an extra 7% provincial sales tax. NCIX uses only one 7% tax, but has $89.00 in shipping costs, so it pretty much balances out. I'd like to keep the Audigy, I'm big into sound and would like to have a nice...

    PC Building - Totally Lost

Well, as an update, there's some good news and bad news. The good news is, I learned enough to be able to piece together a system I thought was similar to the Dell I originally looked at. I'll post it at the bottom for critiques, etc. The unfortunate news is, that it's pretty expensive. After...

    PC Building - Totally Lost

Well, with your advice so far, and using the guide, I've been browsing NCIX and come up with the following base components so far. I'll still have to add on opticals, but upon learning the motherboard has networking capabilities already, it's saved some worry. AMD Athlon 64 2800+ MSI K8N Neo...

    PC Building - Totally Lost

This likely won't be necessary. The university I go to is close enough that I can stay at home and commute to school every day. So would you say that XP is a better choice? Will that be able to tide me over for a good amount of time, say, 3 years? What are some good examples of these hard...

    PC Building - Totally Lost

This may be a kind of long winded post, so please bear with me. Also, please forgive any questions that seem really stupid, because I'm not very knowledgeable about computer hardware. My biggest accomplishment so far has been putting in a network card in the family PC ;) so I know basically...

    Memory Question

But would I be able to go to, say, October, with 512 and have no problems? I don't play big games like CS, Unreal Tournament, have no plans to buy Doom 3. Biggest game I'd be involved with is FFXI.

    Dimension 4600 worth the $1071?

I'm looking at a Dell Dimension 4600 now, since I have neither the time nor the know-how to build a computer on my own, and I like Dell. Here's my specs, his might be similar, but then again, I'm using Dell Canada so they might differ a lot: Pentium 4 Processor, 2.8 GHz, 800FSB Windows XP Home...

    Memory Question

I'm in the process of getting a new PC, but I've run into a bit of a dilemna involving memory. I'll be playing games mostly, but 1GB of RAM is a bit out of my price range. Is 512 MB enough at the moment to tide me over until I can afford an upgrade? Or is 512 too outdated by now?

    Monitor help?

I get a problem like that, when I either have my cellular phone on near the computer, or when someone turns on the television, which is just on the other side of the wall. If you don't meet these conditions, my post has meant absolutely nothing for you ;)

    Questions on PCI Express

Thanks for all your help. So a 9800 Pro would be a better option right now? Also, since you brought up sound, do you mean I should ditch the Audigy 2 I was planning on in favour of the integrated audio?

    Questions on PCI Express

I'm looking at buying from Dell. Despite what computer enthusiasts say about them, I've used Dell for quite awhile and haven't been disappointed at all. The new Dimension 8400 is the one I'm looking at, with a few customizations. All told, it'll run me about $2k Canadian, which is fine by me...

    Questions on PCI Express

I'll first start by saying that I'm not very smart when it comes to computer hardware, so please keep any explanations in language that's as plain as possible. I'm going to be purchasing a new computer in the next month or so, and I was wondering what to expect with the new PCI Express video...
