I will try the memtest. The virus - probably not an issue, as I think that statistic only applies if you connect to the net without the benefit of a firewall. I use a hardware firewall from the start. Though I will do a virus check too...

OS failures on my dad's computer

I got the replacement and it worked. My best guess is that I fried the original mobo by using the wrong voltage video card.

Well, I sent my mobo back for replacement. Hopefully I will get it shortly, and I will be sure to test the replacement with a different power supply if it exhibits the same problems. I will post when I do this...

Thnaks, I decided the mobo was bad also. I am getting a replacement instead of trying a different board entirely; hopefully the new one will work. I can't imagine that non-posting, non-video boards are typical, especially for such a common board... we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the suggestions. The voltage slider is correct; I did reset the battery (jumper was OK); unfortunately, I don't have different memory of the correct type. Still... I probably would at least get some video out - maybe just an error message - even if the memory were bad, don't you...

I put in a slightly older Celeron, and it does the same thing. Even with a processor problem, wouldn't you at least get some sort of video output?
