choppy dvd playback on older laptop

the thing about PowerDVD was that it was good for when you had weak specs. like, it was supposed to run on low-end computers without a problem...weird

jeeze people, if you are all going to become so damned technical then of course a mac is still a pc. realize this though, do not most people consider an IBM-compatible system a pc and a macinstosh pc just a macintosh or apple?

Testing Every Aspect Of My PC

well, I downloaded and installed PcMark04 and 3dMark01 (03 is still downloading). I ran the tests and all went fine; I can view the description just cannot view online and compare etcetera. you cannot do this without buying?

combining memory modules. a weeee question :D

as far as I know, there is no way to connect extra ram sticks...motherboards often have 4 slots so if you are using mnore than 4, perhaps you should think about upgrading to greater value sticks. you can get 512ddr for like $80 or so. pop 2 of those babies in and you are ready to go ;-)

Advice on starting a local PC repair/upgrade service?

make sure you really want to do this...I am able to do the exact same stuff but when I do it, it is boring and eventually I get quite sick of it. also, you always end up running into things that should not go wrong that you have to work extra-hard on >_< as far as pursuing this, I would not...

well, I was never quite crazy about the idea about driving all the way to a store to get something that I could order online and have in 2 days. to me, the marginal cost is at stake. for me to drive out, I need to have a friend bring me and thus impose on them >_<

run Ad-Aware, SpyBot:Search&Destroy, and also make sure to get a firewall so you can see if anyone is accessing port 21 (or any other available port for that matter)

spyware affects many different things. I would not doubt that the problem COULD be with spyware, but I will also say that it is most likely something in your system that is causing it. note: if programs are freezing on your computer or things are getting very laggy, all you have to do is go to...

Looking to upgrade...

as a few others have said, get the ATI Radeon 9800PRO 128mb. there is nothing that will need more than 128megs and this card is very stable.

on a side note, make sure to check with peripherals around where your router would be...there are certain things that can cause the signal to go out (microwave, 2.4g phone, etcetera)

Quiet Cheap to leave on PC?

you need to think about what you are going to use the computer for. if it is just a file server than you can buy a cheap-o little thing that just runs with nothing special. if you are using it for actual use, then it will have faster hardware thus increasing the noise factor.

BIOS/Post startup not recognizing CD-ROM

I was having a problem like that with my harddrive when I put together my new computer. it turns out that my IDE cable went bad. I replaced it with an extra one I had lying around and to this day it has not given me any problems.
