Need advice for organizing network room - Pics are coming...

We have a number of network rooms, as well as electronic equipment rooms for video and audio equipment. Our engineers typically label cables at both ends using premade labels, then bundle cables together using straps - the velcro straps work very well and allow you to move things around if you...

Would there be an advantage to adding a firewire network connection over an ethernet one?

You know, Gigabit ethernet cards can be had for around $50 for copper GigE. That's not a bad price, and probably wouldn't be that much over what the firewire connection would cost you. Then you can just run a crossover cable between the two PCs and get the whole pipe for transfers. Z.

SX1030 owners look here(as well as others)

A lot of people use Panaflo fans, BG Micro usually has them at a good price (around $2-$3 a fan). They are, however, untailed, so you'll need to solder them up to some molex connectors to get them going. They seem to be out of stock right now, but I'd guess they'll get them back in soon. I run...

    That sniffer stuff..

Erp...*laugh* I thought it was enabled. It's back in the profile again, sorry about that. Please feel free to contact me, if I can answer I will. wuboy, it sounds like Ethereal isn't able to detect your NIC - what sort of NIC are you using? I've had good luck with 3Com 3c905b and Intel NICs...

    question -- network security position

A question right up my alley! This information is mostly for security only positions, and not for general "network admin" types, although some does apply. In my current job(s) I handle both normal network administration and security - I'm a graduate assistant and my role in that position is as...

    That sniffer stuff..

Ethereal is also available as a Win32 program - I use it on my laptop for demonstration and portable network testing. Highly recommended as a freeware program, but remember to have a decent processor and a good chunk of RAM to play with (My rig is a 700 with 256 MB running Win2k). If you can...

X-Box for my gf???? need some input here pls...

If you're clever about the entire thing, you can manage a new computer for under the cost of an XBox and games - check the sales that Computer Geeks run every week or two for Emachines. They're not top fo the line boxes, but for <$300, you can't really go wrong. (I've used one of their 366e...

    Oldtimers Sound Off

Yet another long time reader here, though I'm usually pretty quiet. I've been cracking for the team since my original team made it to a half a million blocks (thus completing our original goal - that took a long, long time on those old systems.). I've greatly enjoyed watching the cameraderie and...

SCSI cable for HP c1529 Tape backup help!

You should be able to go with just about any 2940 - they're all capable of the speeds a tape drive that age reaches. It all boils down to buying a 50 pin HD or 68 pin (UW) to 50 pin low density cable. That'll cost as much as a used 2940. :-p If you're willing to buy used, 2940's go for $20-$30...

SCSI cable for HP c1529 Tape backup help!

It's not actually a matter of matching the cable - you can get SCSI cables with the correct ends on them for most conversions. Your main issues with using the RAID card are dependent on how the channels on the card are set up (ie: if your backup drive, which runs a slower SCSI than the drives is...

SCSI cable for HP c1529 Tape backup help!

Offhand (mind you, this is going from memory), you need a 68 pin -> 50 pin connector. Erm, do you have a Centronics (printer cable) style connector on the drive, or is it a smaller connector? The parts page seems to indicate that you have a 50 pin Centronics style (as they describe it, a low...

How would you rate these PCs

People here are neglecting for the most part to note the difference between consumer and corporate lines. HP Laserjet "print governor" or print limiter

I was recently handed an HP part that has a rather interesting function: I was told that it is the limiter chip that prevents printers at places like OfficeMax and Staples from printing huge numbers of copies, and that it is, in fact, a print limiter for retail outlets. It's for an HP4050...

    Anitmatter

A thorough grounding in hard science fiction comes in handy. ;-) Typically, thoughts of largescale production of antimatter hinge in some cheap, easily available form of energy. Often, this is solar or fusion energy in proposals, with solar being the only really feasible non-nuclear form that...

I'm with Postman - distributed.net all the way, largely due to their flexibility of configuration. I've got around 60 gigahertz of processors, with more coming soon after Christmas, and the distributed.net client and control software just work so well with the situation where they're running...

Help! what's a good PCI board to run Dual Monitor

I've used a Mystique, Voodoo 3 PCI, and various Trident cards successfully. The V3 is the easiest to configure and work with, and has the most flexibility- not suprising in a newer card. I've also heard good things about PCI Geforce MX cards as secondary cards, but haven't used one myself. Z.

    round ide cables

I found that when I used a knife, I was more likely to slice the insulation. Instead, simply get a push-pin or a thumbtack and push it through. It's dull, and easy to control since you can hold it easily. I'd always stick mine into a board, then just pull a little bit. Once I had a bit of a...

    Giant RAM drives

In all truth, the former (system RAM as a RAM drive) is more attractive, largely due to flexibility and pricing. The solid state drive issue is more of a comparison concept. I'll equip the server with a UPS, as well as periodic checkpointing for the RAM drive - in this case, the UPS for a...

"Wizard's First Rule" - Who has read it?

I think you'll find the series an excellent read. I've read it through twice, and thoroughtly enjoyed it. In many ways, I think it is superior to Jordan's novels, which are the most direct competitor to these (they share many similarities). The entire lose/loose error is often an editorial...

There are two ways you can do this (and you can find more information on any number of websites, it just takes a little looking). The first way, which is to use a normal HTML link is probably superior. I'll explain why after I give the code. You need to create your code with your regular URL...

Does it bother you when a non-computer literate person gets screwed by a consultant/repair shop?

My worst times are in the big office superstores. The salesperson almost always tries to sell a system that I know to be a problem, or sells features that the person doesn't need. The worst was always watching somebody get sold on the "value" of a Packard Bell- fortunately, the good...

Help with an old pc...Boot up problems...

It sounds like it might possibly be a configuration problem in the BIOS.
