    Gaming/Programming Build

Yikes, thanks for that catch with the RAM. That would have sucked. Made some of the changes you guys suggested. Also switched over to a modular 650W PSU. I'll be ordering either tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for the help, guys.

    Gaming/Programming Build

Hey all, I'm looking into building a new rig that will be used mainly for gaming and programming (mostly using Visual Studio, which can be slow). I've been out of the game for a few years now, so I'd very much appreciate any advice you guys have. After some quick research I've put together the...

    Finished C++ Primer Plus

In addition to what's already been mentioned: If you want to stick around in C++ land, you should check these out. And if you want to stick with games, there's a bunch of libraries out there (like SDL) that would be a good next step. GameDev.net is a phenomenal resource if you're into games...

    MMORPG similar to EQ1?

Same here. So many people are afraid of 'the grind' nowadays, but grinding, when combined with forced grouping, created a level of socialization in EQ1 that just isn't present in modern games. In WoW I feel like I'm completely alone - there's no reason to talk to anyone for most of the game...

Planning to build a new computer

Everything there looks pretty solid to me. You could probably throw in a WD 6400AAKS for an extra $30 - it would be faster and provide much more storage. As far as temperatures - if you're not overclocking, I don't think they'll be a big problem. Then again, I don't have any experience...

    Long-time idea for MMORPG

Games like that exist. We call them first person shooters. And that current RPGs and MMORPGs are an 'endless, repetitive grind' is a matter of a opinion. I believe that the reason that people play MMORPGs is that they feel that progression is fun. Remove progression and you remove the soul of...

    Long-time idea for MMORPG

This would completely negate the purpose of an MMORPG. Would you want to play if, after six months leveling up a character, you were only just a little bit better than you were six months ago? With no prospects of improving? Why would anyone plan any type of RPG if his/her character was...

Would like some help getting voltage down on mild overclock of E8400

If you're worried about hurting your CPU, you should be fine at 1.28v. Any increase in voltage/heat will shorten the lifespan of a CPU, yes - but it may lower it from 10 years to 8 years, or something like that. For most overclockers, that kind of degradation is irrelevant. What you do want...

    e8400 at stock voltages

Up the VCore some more, then :) Not all chips are the same - while some people may be able to run their chips at 3.6GHz on stock voltage, this may not be the case for you. Just be smart about it. Anything under 1.4v should be safe, but you shouldn't need anywhere near that to hit 3.6GHz.

Yeah, this looks badass....Fallout 3 Trailer

I think the bottom line is this: Ex-Fallout 1/2 players are going to be disappointed at the glaring differences between those games and Fallout 3. We Fallout virgins, however, will probably get a solid and enjoyable game.

    e8400 at stock voltages

Temperature's not your problem at 63C. It's a little hot, but it's certainly not making your system unstable.

Exactly the same feeling I got.

    OC for my E8400

That's crazy. I can (maybe) hit 4.2GHz, but not using anywhere near those voltages. I had to go 1.4v+ just to hit 4.0Ghz.
  16. A

    OC for my E8400

I think you're pretty safe under 1.4v on that chip. I'm running 3.8GHz @ 1.36v right now and I've noticed no problems at all.

    e8400 at stock voltages

How hot are you running? It's not a temperature issue unless you're riding real close to TJMax. Run RealTemp or CoreTemp and check. The fact that you're at stock voltage makes a temperature issue somewhat unlikely. My guess is that you have some of the power saving features on that board...

    ATi 4870 X2 (R700) previews thread

Lol. Okay, Rollo. You got us. ATI isn't the top dog yet because their launch day is a few weeks away. I wonder, though: what will you say when the 4870X2 does launch? Will you then admit that ATI is, present tense, on top? Somehow I doubt it.

    ATi 4870 X2 (R700) previews thread

That's fine. By your logic, you're right. Just realize that your definition of 'on top' differs from that of nearly everyone else on the planet. And, in case you didn't realize, when the 4870X2 launches it will be the undisputed highest performing dual GPU card available. Will ATI's...

    4gb v 8gb

For almost any application - and certainly for simple everyday computing - 4GB is plenty, and you will see no benefit by doubling it.

    ATi 4870 X2 (R700) previews thread

They have the best price/performance right now. The 4870X2 beats a single GTX280 in pretty much every benchmark, and sometimes even beats GTX280 SLI. In other words, it costs an nVidia customer $1000 to consistently beat ATI's $500 card. ATI wins this round. Period.

    4870 X2 pics

So I guess McDonald's is inferior compared to, say, every decent restaurant on the planet? Except that McDonald's is bringing in 4 billion a year. I'm pretty sure my local steak house isn't.

So what's the final word on the GA-EP35-DS3L ?

For me, the settings don't revert back to defaults, per se. Rather, if I shut the computer down for too long (or it fails to boot due to BIOS changes), the CPU Host Clock Control option in the BIOS switches from Enabled to Disabled. This effectively restores the FSB (but not the voltages) to...

Help with E8400 on P5K Overclock

All processors are not created equal. You can't assume that you'll be able to hit 4.0 GHz on 1.3 vcore just because you've seen others do it. It took almost 1.42 vcore (1.39 after vdroop) to get my Wolfdale relatively stable at 4.0, even with 2 sticks of RAM. I backed off to 3.82 @ 1.36 vcore...

    New PC Build

As someone else said, if you're worried about noise I'd suggest looking for a different PSU. I don't own one of those, but I've heard they're loud. As far as the Xigmatek - it's only as loud as the fan you put on it. I've got one of these on it and it's more or less silent, and it cools great...

    New Gaming Computer Build

I'm planning to OC the thing as far as air cooling will take it =P I'd rather spend the extra few bucks if it'll give me a chance at a better overclock. I originally picked the Corsair 620W because I was going to go with the 9800GX2. I think I'll stick with it now, though - the GTX280s will...

    New Gaming Computer Build

I'm planning to buy and build a new system in the next week or so. I built my current rig almost 5 years ago, and, despite periodic upgrades, it's becoming a little dated. As the title of this post suggests, the computer will be primarily used for gaming, as well as other general computer...

    LCD Issue

Hey all. For quite a while now I've had an issue with my Dell 27" LCD monitor. The issue is this: To the right (and also sometimes to the left) of pretty much all objects on my screen there is a 'shadow' of sorts. For example, next to all of the text of this post I see a darkish line...

German scientists have broken the light barrier

Out of curiosity, would this theoretical 'faster-than-light' wave appear to an observer to simply travel backwards (from the North Pole to the South Pole)? Or would the Santa's light turn on, and then the first light would turn on back in the South Pole, and the wave would travel in the...

Why does stuff exist? Where did we come from?

Interesting. How does the fact that nothing is random make infinity or eternity easier to accept, though? Even if the universe as it is now is completely predictable (although I believe this contradicts the Heisenberg principle), how does this predictability explain the origin of everything...

Why does stuff exist? Where did we come from?

This is all well and good, but it has nothing to do with why 'stuff' exists. Although I admit that it's really an unanswerable question at this point. This is probably true, and in any case, 'why' is not really a valid question when speaking of the creation of the universe unless you...

    Overclocking problems

Hey everyone. I recently upgraded my system to a Opteron 165 on a DFI LANParty board, hoping to get a nice overclock out of it. The problem is, even if I only up the FSB by a single MHz, the computer refuses to load windows. It will get to the screen with the blue bar going across the screen but...

    Frustrating internet problems

Ever since we went wireless in my household a few years ago, we have had all sorts of problems with the internet. Sometimes it goes so terribly slow that it's impossible to use, and an even more frustrating problem is that I will periodically get kicked off of internet games once every hour or...

    Is all that cooling necessary?

Yeah, the major reason that I went with water cooling over good air cooling is because my system is almost dead silent. I leave it on 24/7 and it's in my room right near my bed... I don't want to try to sleep over a jet plane taking off. Of course, it does also keep my system very cool, but I'm...

    POLL: Athlon 64 2800+ overclocks

    Thoughts on this ViewSonic 22"

I've got the NEC/Mitsubishi FE2111SB and I can tell you that it's definitely nice to have the 22" of space available. The only problem is that I my desk sucks and I'm forced to sit too close to the screen, but coming from a quality 17" LCD I can say that I'm MUCH happier with this CRT than with...

    POLL: Athlon 64 2800+ overclocks

Damn, I'm jealous Neptune. My 3000+ will only reach 2.5GHz stable, and it's on water. I should have waited for the DFI board :(. Think it could be my RAM holding me back? If that's the case, maybe I should buy one of those DDR boosters and see if I can push it any farther. EDIT: I posted...

    What exactly does cache do?

Alright, I'm probably just repeating here, but this is the best way that I've seen cache explained: Pretend you're a librarian. When somebody comes into the library, they have to ask you to get the book that they want. So every time that somebody comes in for a book, you have to get up from...
