Thank you everyone for your thoughts.
Does anyone else have any other options?
I did explain the benefits of SSD. They really just don't want to spend more than $100 at this point.
The Adata seemed like the lowest cost with best reviews. And I did look at the Plextor M3. But they don't...
My relative has an external drive for backup. However I like to make an image of all my drives and especially for close family too so I don't have to reinstall everything all over again. They don't want to spend $100-200 on a SSD. So I gave them a choice of an Adata S510 SSD 120GB drive for $99...
Thanks everyone. They're not planning to upgrade til summer but it's good to be able to give them options.
One more question. They have a ASRock H61M/U3S3 board that has 3rd party 6gb/s sata (Asmedia ASM1061 chip). Can an SSD be plugged into the 3rd party sata? The onboard sata are only 3gb/s...
My parents have had their Sata hard drive for a few years. I do make an image of the drive (in an internal mobile rack using Acronis) and in addition also backup their data for them on another external drive.
I'm trying to convince them to buy an SSD and use their old drive as a backup...
Will this power supply power the G620 CPU, + the Radeon HD 6670 GPU + ASRock Z68 PRO3 GEN3 motherboard, 2 sticks of DDR3 1600 ram, 1 7200rpm sata HDD, 1 sata DVDRW drive, 2 led 120mm fans?
Or should we go up to the 430 watt power supply?
Or a different brand name?
The Seagate Momentus XT 750gb ST750LX003 hybrid hard drive arrived today. Installed it and it works :) No issues at this point in time.
Update 7/26/2012 :Using Temperature Monitor the drive reads 36 degrees C. I've had no problems yet. Boot up time is much faster 20-25 seconds compared to the...
Thank You d4a2n0k.
I knew that 3gb/s drives were backwards compatible with 1.5gb/s drive but wasn't sure about 6gb/s being backwards compatible with 1.5gb/s.
I plan to purchase a Seagate Momentus XT 750gb ST750LX003 hybrid hard drive.
I'd like to find out if a 6gb/s sata hard drive will work in an older 2006 Core Duo Macbook with 1.5gb/s Sata?
I need at minimum a 320gb hard drive. An SSD would be too expensive and my current drive (Seagate...
Tried sysprep but because I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 it wouldn't allow me to create the image. But Plug-n-Pray worked going from a P35 to an 1155 board :) Beforehand I did create an image backup and then tried to remove as many drivers as possible from device manager. Not sure if that...
Ryan Shrout works at www.PCper.com and http://twit.tv/twich. Don't know about ECS. But yes, it's more informative than a review.
I got my board yesterday. Love it so far. The only small issue I have is sometimes my keyboard isn't detected fast enough to get into the bios. I have an old PS2...
Thanks everyone. I decided to try it and everything worked after I figured out I had the reset and power case connecters swapped :) I was about to pull out the flat head screwdriver trick to manually try to power on (bypassing the case connectors). Sure made me nervous for about 15min though...
EPS/ATX12V CPU Cable. I bought a new 1155 motherboard and have a question about this connection that attaches to the motherboard 8 pins. I have a Corsair 400Watt CMPSU-400CX power supply.
They do fit into the motherboard but I'm worried about turning it on because the square and rounded tops...
Thanks dma0991
Decided to go with a P67 board instead that supports the DDR3 1600.

I'll just use my old 9600GT GPU with it for now.
+ tax and $15 fee if you are a non-member making the total around $302
Just got mine yesterday and love it with Directv HD service.

Thanks everyone. I actually ordered a P67 already (supposed to come today) and was second guessing myself. In the future I can always upgrade the cpu to OC :) Easier than upgrading the motherboard.
But will it work? I know ram used to be like that in the past. You could buy faster than the board was rated for and it would just clock back to what the board was capable of.
Which is better? Not really much of a gamer. But I like to OC a little for fun.
I'm trying to decide whether to get a P67 or an H67 board.
If I get a P67 I do plan on upgrading to a better GPU than the 9600GT. Not right away though. Or I could just get an H67 board and use the onboard graphics.
I'm planning to get this motherboard MSI H67MA-E35 (B3)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130569
And this ram Gskill DDR3 1600 (promo code for $10 off til 4/18 so I can get it for $44.99)

The motherboard supports only up...
This one just came back in stock. $107.56 shipped. I just ordered it. Haven't had an ECS board in years. Only bad thing I see is no UEFI bios.

The P540 cpu is a little slower. GPUs seems about even. But you shouldn't notice a difference with what you're using it for as richierich1212 stated. I think you got a good...
The new cpu's are out now! Price is of course higher for the new sandy bridge cpu. Minimum of $549 for the 15.6" and $599 for the 14"

Only 2gb ram and 250gb hard drive. Should be good enough for most and easily upgradeable in the future.

Update: Hard drive is not easy to replace :( RAM is easy to upgrade though.
Update: Free shipping coupon no longer works :(
My brother is looking to buy a 15.6" or smaller notebook with DVD drive under $400.
The best 2 options I could find is a notebook with a E-350 1.6GHZ dual core cpu/ HD 6310 GPU, and the other notebook has P360 2.3GHZ dual core cpu/ HD 4250 GPU.
Which is better for surfing the web, maybe...
My aunt was used to a smooth touchpad. This one has a 'rough sandpaper' like touchpad. That's the only thing she doesn't like so far. Wish I had more experience with notebooks. I have a Macbook and it has the nice smooth touchpad. I didn't know they made notebooks with rough touchpads :(

Ordered the i3 Toshiba from Newegg. Just came yesterday. Seems pretty good so far. Battery life appears to be around 3-4 hrs. Haven't had time to test fully yet.
Just had to spend some time doing the usual prep on a brand name computer. Removing Norton and Toshiba preinstalled software...
She is upgrading from an old Dell 600m 14" that lasted 7-8 years. It was 5.5lbs so the Toshiba will be lighter by a half pound.
Battery life is important to her so I think the i3 is a better choice right?

My aunt is planning to get a 14" notebook. Intel should have better battery life right? She is going to use the notebook to play dvd movies, surf the internet and check email...
I'm helping my teenage brother find a notebook. Either a 14"-15.6". 250-320gb hard drive 3-4gb ram. Windows 7 Home Premium. Webcam. Battery that will last 2.5hrs.
Found an Acer for $634 on newegg but it's over his budget. It has the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470...
I'll pass that along to my aunt. She is shopping for herself and also when her grandson is over she'd like him to be able to play his games/videos.
Which netbook might be a better choice?
I keep reading that the ion platform is better even with the slower cpu.
Which would be a better choice for a young child around 5 or 6 who plays online games and videos at places like disney, cartoon network, etc.?
ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1201N $484 (good ion graphics but slow atom cpu)

As I posted before, I have an A3 stepping SL3P6 chipset which means I can use a P2 or P3 based on this chipset. http://www.intel.com/support/g...el810/sb/cs-004047.htm
Sounds strange to me but the watts also appear to be lower with the P3 650mhz 100fsb (17 watts)versus the celeron 433mhz...
Photos of the Socket 370 Celeron 433 heatsink. Will this heatsink work with a P3 socket 370 cpu? Can I put a fan on top of this kind of heatsink?http://picasaweb.google.com/de...=Gv1sRgCOTjgYfkluPBYg#
This shows the 3 versions of the i810. I have the best out of them. i810-dc100. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/whitney,105-5.html
Intel Chipset Identification Utility says I have an 810 chipset with a 82810-dc100 memory controller hub. So the hard drive in this chipset is actually...
Yes the gateway link says it's an i810L. But the actual chipset by looking at it is the i810 based on intels spec sheet. It shows that the memory controller hub labeled fw8210dc100 is really an i810 not the i810L. Who is right?
When I get home I'll run a program to find out what the hard...
Yes I updated to the latest bios. And the release notes say nothing about cpu compatibilty. And can't find anything on the gateway site about cpu's working with this motherboard. Here's the link just in case. http://support.gateway.com/sup...docs.asp?sn=0018789927
My motherboard is the Intel...
Actually I was wrong about my chipset. It's really only the 810. Everest said it was an 810e. CPU-Z said it is the 810. So I decided to look at the chip myself and it's the 810 :( The memory controller hub is FW82810DC100. http://www.intel.com/support/c...s/inf/sb/CS-009269.htm
So I believe...
