    S@H1 Athlon64 1ch vs 2ch RAM WU times?

Unless you're picking up an Opteron or an A64-FX, there's no such thing as dual channel RAM. You can use multiple sticks, but it won't make any difference in crunch times. The fact that the memory controller is on-die already boosts memory performance far beyond what dual-channel DDR could do...

    Free AMD Athlon 64 Screensaver

A64 3200 and 9800 n/p here... garbled as well, although it seems to be tied to the fact that i'm running dual monitors. When I disable the second one, it works fine.

    Logitech MX-1000 Laser Mouse

eek, yup, meant mx700. i was typing that with my eyes and brain halfway working.. i think... To the person questioning the weight difference between the 700/1000, the 1000 *feels* lighter to me, but that could very easily be one of two things... The size of the mouse spreading its weight...

    Logitech MX-1000 Laser Mouse

Just picked this mouse up at the local Fry's. Came fully charged (at least as far as the LED indicators are concerned) and tracks like a dream. I've also still got my trusty MX500 and MX700 hooked up to this system and have to say the feel, and overall responsiveness of the 1000 is a...

Target clearance - Microsoft MN-700 Wireless router 24.48 at Target!!!!

Just an FYI to anyone still watching this thread... Looks like Costco may be jumping on the clearance thing too. Found some Microsoft USB wireless-g desktop adapters there for $19.xx out the door. Not sure how the signal on these compares to the PCI card, but at least you can position the...

"IDE and SCSI : RAID Shootout" - still true?

Another note... IDE RAID, specifically RAID 0, has been shown, proven, and hammered into the ground as being a waste... SCSI on the other handseems to have the RAID world locked down, at least in the enterprise. Not sure how well a RAID 0 setup would work using SCSI on a desktop/gaming rig.

"IDE and SCSI : RAID Shootout" - still true?

I personally wouldn't go that far overboard, but then again, i'm poor, sooooo.... =) In all seriousness, for what you plan on doing, SCSI isn't going to help performance much, if any.. and almost certainly won't do so the the level that you would likely notice. With that kind of budget, you...

Need help with building video editing machine

Crapload of RAM, and very large hard drives == what he's gonna want. If your friend wants to do it right, no less than a gig of ram should really be considered, esp. if the video clips are larger. Might also wanna think about a Raptor for the system drive (and to install Premiere onto) since...

LCD or CRT? which do you prefer for gaming

CRT would have to be my choice for gaming. I can't speak from direct experience, however, as i've never actually played any games on an LCD, just read the mountains of reviews out there comparing the two. As for cost, however, CRT still wins out, unless desk real estate is hard to come by.

"IDE and SCSI : RAID Shootout" - still true?

Can't really say wether or not SCSI is worth it without knowing what you plan to do with the system. For most home/gaming/non-server types of applications, SCSI is merely a nice and expensive toy, vs. being truly noticeable and worthwhile... considering the cost. If you're interested in...

Ditto. Altho if it is possible, assuming they dont use some sort of proprietary transfer method that gets 'decoded' by the drop-out box, i'd certainly love to see it. =) Think i'm gonna be hitting up google for a while now....

SB Audigy and case front audio out

There's not too much that can be done unless you can find a pinout diagram for the IDE-looking row of pins on the soundcard. Of course, Creative wouldn't make that too easy to find since they would prefer that you upgrade to the platinum edition of the card, or order the front box from them...

Windows XP not detecting hard drive

Where are you seeing the 'no hdd detected' message? If it's during the xp install process, you probably need to get the sata controller's drivers on floppy and hit the f6 key during the setup where it asks if you want to load any 3rd party raid/scsi drivers (should be right at the beginning)...

    Abit NF7-S MOBO

first off, nice board.. been using that on one of my rigs for a while, awesome overclocker! anywho, if the only change that has been made to that system since the oc'ing has needed to be toned down was that hsf/paste, that would be the first place to look. how overclockable are A64s ?

That depends a lot on which motherboard/chipset you're looking at getting. Make sure it has a WORKING pci/agp lock, otherwise as you overclock, your video and add-in cards can start to become pretty unstable. UNless of course yer looking at an a64 FX chip, which has an unlocked multiplier. =)

How do you have partitions set up?

If your system is short on RAM you might consider throwing in a small (1-2 gig) partition for the swap file to sit in. It doesnt beef the performance of the swap file on its own, but it does help keep the swap file from fragmenting alongside other files. IN the end tho i'd bet money that the...

    Will I have problems?

Assuming that that PSU isnt defective in any way, you can probably get away with that with your current config. With all the controversy around the 6800-series cards and their power draw it's ahrd to say for certain, but when in doubt, it never hurts to bump up the PSU a bit. I wouldn't worry...

    Physical Hard Drive configurations

    Physical Hard Drive configurations

I wouldn't bother with the PCI IDE controller since that board has enough connections to power up 10 drives in total (4 SATA, 6 PATA.) I'm actually running the same board myself with two 160 GB drives in RAID 1 on the PATA Promise controller, and my boot drive off the primary ide channel. As...

    2.1 speaker question

I personally wouldn't consider most 2.1 systems to be truly 2.1 (emphasis on the .1) but in the end it really shouldnt make much of a difference. One way to look at is is that speakers such as the 2200's make it so that the choice of where to split the audio into seperate devices is done on the...

    2.1 speaker question

Technically you wouldnt have 4.1 since the .1 wouldnt be a different channel (internal crossover as you mentioned.) But, the setup would work as far as the other four speakers being able provide directional sound/surround in things like games.

    What FRYED this MSI motherboard?

Just a thought, but is that a USB header right at the bottom of where the fire looks like it started? I've accidentally crossed pins connecting USB headers in the past (antec case has each pin seperated) and noticed (luckily within a minute of powering up) that the wires were starting to get...
