I'm trying to follow the Lifehacker guide with a G41M-ES2L too, but it won't boot the USB stick. In verbose boot it gets as far as AppleRTL8169Ethernet. In non-verbose the kernel panics. I have the same setup as your beater except with E6300 and Geforce 7100GS. iPC 10.5.6 with NVInject works...

What is your all time favourite CPU?

I had some good ones over the years, but E6300 at 3.1GHz is the best yet. Rock solid at less than stock voltage.

Thanks, I'll check actual voltage with CPU-Z. It's pretty stable as far as booting and installing XP, but fails OCCT in less than a minute, a little longer in Orthos.

How's everyone's luck oc'ing this combo? I tried 1333FSB, but it's not Prime stable at stock voltage, 1.1875v. I guess I could try a pin-mod to bump up the Vcore.

99$ E7200 w/ ecs board

Pretty hot. I picked one up yesterday too. ECS mobos aren't usually good overclockers, but I tried 1333 FSB in the BIOS and it runs great at 3.16 GHz. I don't have a 45nm compatible motherboard so I'll keep the ECS.

Pulling a drive out of a raid 1 mirror

Server RAID cards may have a special container format on disk, and you'll have trouble reading the disk on a different RAID card, but desktop RAID 1 has a regular partition table on disk. If you pull the drive, it looks like a regular single disk.

Xbox360 price drop - $50 drop for the Premium

Not a real price drop, just a clearance deal on the discontinued 20GB. Amazon had a deal for a $50 gift card with Xbox 360 and GTA4, and I ended up getting the Arcade.

In your opinion, what is the BEST thermal grease (paste or T.I.M ) for air cooling?

I've been using Ceramique too, and it definitely gives a nice improvement over the no-name silicone compound. Fry's had it for something like 8 bucks for the big tube. Easy cleanup, no setting time, and performance is pretty close to AS5.

Strange Problem 500FSB+ E8400

I had a similar problem with my E6300 at 445FSB. CPU is stable with Prime and OCCT, and I can run loops of 3dMark06, but SecondLife would hard-lock the system after a minute. It was no problem at stock speed. I don't game on this one so I couldn't test a whole lot of 3d games on it, and it just...

Automatic better mileage than a manual?

Check the difference between the IS250 manual and auto. Auto 24MPG combined, manual 21MPG combined. I think the auto has taller gears. Slushboxes used to be heavier than manuals, but according to spec sheet, IS250 manual is 20 lbs heavier than auto.

Save gas. Drive slow.

It does work, but I'd rather get a more efficient vehicle and drive 75. Corolla rental car got 36 mpg and my motorcycle gets 45 mpg freeway.

Laptop cooling

Try low tech first. Prop up the laptop on a book to make a space underneath. Some of the cooling pads have such weak fans, they don't cool better than the prop up on a book trick.

GPS: DigiWalker C230 vs TomTom ONE 3rd Edition

How's the speaker volume on the Tomtom? I have a C220 (same model w/o TTS), and speaker just isn't loud enough for the car. The Magellan Roadmate 2200 has a much better speaker.

Sure, BMW is getting back to its roots with the 135i, but at the core, it's just a shortened 3 series that's a little bit cheaper, $6000, and a little bit lighter, 200 lbs. I'm sure it's a nice drive. The 335i is no slouch on the track either...

BSEL Mod Questions

I want to try the BSEL mod on my E4300, but it's kinda a waste to spend 12 bucks on the defroster paint or pen. I did find copper tape at Fry's for $2.50 a roll which must be safer than aluminum foil. Can one of the SoCal people lend me their pen for five minutes, or do you want to get rid of it...

Mazda 2!

It shares a platform with the Ford Fiesta which is also coming to the US. In this case "crossover" is just another name for a hatchback. It's no taller than the sedan and doesn't have the SUV style of other crossovers.

Is the PDA market dead?...Student in need of WiFi gadget

Nokia Internet Tablet. N800 is $230 at buy.com. Ipod touch works too, except 3rd party software is locked down. I use a Moto Q smartphone myself. Works fine for organizing except for the limited battery life.

EPA changed the mileage test so that it's closer to real world driving. All the 2008's have lower mileage than the same model 2007's. Yaris dropped from 34 mpg city to 29 mpg city. A Smart would probably get 38 mpg city under the old test. Is 50 mpg for the Euro model combined or city...
