4850 refuses to display AA/AF

Recently my 4850 stopped displaying either AA and/or AF in the following games: Oblivion Morrowind Call of Duty 4 Bioshock Fallout 3 Counterstrike Source Age Of Empires III NBA 2K9 ..after upgrading to the 8.12's all the way from the 8.8's. I used to play all these games with 4x AA...

Dual core or quad?

It just makes so much more sense to get a dual core.. cheaper, faster, run cooler, higher o/c potential, more cache, lower power consumption.. You will benefit so much more from a dual core processor capable of being overclocked well over 4.0ghz, than two cores that may or may not be taken...

My 4850 vs 8800 Ultra Comparison

24x AA = useless test. This is an absolutely ridiculous overkill of AA to even care about. 4x MSAA is all you need. In which case the 4850 handles at 0 fps difference over having no AA enabled. So the test is very misleading in this sense. For free 4x AA alone and a few extra FPS in all games...

any way to add non-recognized games to recognize aa/af settings??

I have a few games that, even after enabling Catalyst AI and even after trying to rename the .exe to "Oblivion.exe" still won't recognize my 4x/8x aa/af settings. Then there are also a few games that seem to only allow AA through the game, but I find that the card will handle 4x without any...

radeon hd4850 fan speed?

I would increase it no matter what. 40 is the magic number. Theres NO difference in noise from the stock setting going to 40, since it seems like 40 blends in with the average case fan.. and you are looking at a good 20c drop in temps, idle and load.

Nothing earth shattering, but it will definitely outperform it. My 320mb 8800gts was fine until i tried to add in some aa.

My gtx 260 vs. my hd 4870

Was AA enabled in game, or was it enabled in CCC for the 4870? I've found that you will really only get the free AA if you enable it through CCC.

Will I notice a Huge difference

thats pretty silly.. If you upgraded to either a 4850 or 4870 you would immediately gain free AA. Whether playing with no AA enabled, or with 4X AA enabled, your fps will be identical. If you have ~$300 to spend, your best bet imo is crossfiring two 4850's.. unless you end up like me...

Vista, thats really your call. Performance will be identical, and all the kinks are pretty much worked out by now. You might just have to look for a few new vista drivers for some of your things. But personally, i'm fine with XP and have no real incentive to upgrade to vista. As for the video...

Thanks for the info.. I'm surprised that I didn't hear too much about this prior to buying the card, but I guess it was pretty awesome finding out on my own that I no longer have to stress adding in AA! Also nice to know since this means we 4800 owners (and hopefully all cards in the future...

If alt-tabbing out of games is not accurate, how else are you to check? Play the game in windowed mode? I'm just checking temps from CCC. Why would this number not be accurate?

The end of single slot, high end graphics card?

My 4850 will drop to the high 40's idling sometimes.. and this is only with the fan increased a little bit. I hear some people pushing it to 55-65, but this is not necessary. 40 is all you need, and you won't even hear it. With a single slot card that performs like this, I decided AGAINST...

^ im idiling at 50c right now.. haven't seen it go past 75c during crysis though. This is at the 40 setting. Fastman, is you're computer already pretty loud with fans though? At 55 this thing sounds just WAY too loud, since my computer is less than a foot away from me on my desk.

if you are okay with only 30fps, then a 4850 may even be too much! Even with 1680x1050 and 4X AA theres only three games I have that will dip this low, and thats Crysis, Oblivion, and Assasins Creed. Sorry I cant comment on the CPU fps thing.. thats all a bit beyond my knowledge ;) But I dont...

yeah dude where have you been.. The day I got my 4850 (second i saw it for $175 on newegg), I used the manual fan fix. Used to idle in the 70's, now I'm at LOAD in the 70s, idling in the 50's!

Hmm thats really odd.. On my card, its just as silent at stock "27" as it is with "40".. and it now has LOAD temps better than its stock IDLE temps! The only time I hear it is when I put it to like 45.

9800 GX2 for $360, HD4850 X2 for $400, or GTX 280 for $470?

I actually planned to add another 4850 in crossfire, but decided against it, for now anyway. Theres no reason to be honest.. i'm playing EVERY game, 4X/16X, 1680x1050 or 1920x1080. I wasn't expecting a $175 card to perform anywhere near this! So I think I'm gonna wait for it to drop to...

hmm, i dunno how we got onto direct x, lol.. but about the CPU bottleneck, could someone elaborate on this? I thought a bottleneck was when one part wasn't "fast" enough for the other part to work to its full potential. What does this have to do with AA? Or are you just saying that it doesn't...

Some people like to turn the fan all the way up, I dont know why though.. The fan doesen't need to be cranked up. In fact, your temps won't get any lower if you increase the fan past 40.. all you'll do is get more noise, and the same temps you would get at silent 40. Also, 1680x1050 is...

Is it just me, or does the 4850 handle AA like no other card has ever handled AA before? I remember on my previous video cards, going from 0X to 2X AA meant some hefty FPS increases. But with this card, its almost as if there is NO fps difference. I am playing Crysis, Oblivion, and Assassins...

very nice fix indeed. My temps went from 80c to 50c, IDLE. And I only increased the 23 value to 40. Any louder I can hear it, but is it okay to be running the fan so much faster than the value they put it at? Why exactly did they even do this in the first place??!
