Ubuntu: Xmame causes my computer to shutdown

If the shutdown is sudden, it's a hardware problem. Get a known-good power supply and see if that isn't the problem. If the shutdown is orderly (Ubuntu does show some diagnostic info on a normal shutdown, right?), that is completely bizarro and makes no sense at all.

Let's just say that when I was using Windows and things broke, I would engage in what I would call "Voodoo computing", consisting of doing something---anything---and hoping it would fix the problem. Now that the machine is no longer a black box, I actually understand how and why things work...
