WARNING: Shameless help-me-with-my-homework thread.
I'm doing a small survey on apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Hangouts and other instant messaging apps for a project in my research methodology class. If you use any kind of instant messaging app on your mobile phone or tablet, please...
I'm trying to write a paper on smartphone usage for work email and work-life balance, studying how 24/7 access to work email impacts job satisfaction. If you have two minutes to spare, please help an ATOT old timer out and share your opinion in this google form (link removed). All questions are...
I had DD-WRT on my Linksys WRT54G for many years. While I loved the extra features, I could never get the QoS to work to my taste.
I tried Tomato (the default one, not TomatoUSB) two months ago, and to my surprise, the QoS works like a charm.
Its still as lightweight as ever. The UIs for virus detection and handling have changed a bit.
Some new settings have appeared. For instance:
This was disabled by default. I enabled it and didn't notice any difference in CPU/memory consumption.
I use the bootable version of Acronis to image my OS drive every 2-3 weeks. I keep the last two images (both from full backups). I may start doing weekly incremental backups using Acronis from within Windows, but I'll stick to the bootable version for full images.
Aside: Acronis 2010 bootable...
The registry is probably loaded into RAM when Windows starts. It may have millions of entries. I doubt removing a few extra lines from among millions will make any performance difference. Not worth the risk of FUBARing your computer.
I have a weird problem with my desktop:
i7 920
Gigabyte EX58-UD3R
3GB DDR3
WD 400GB drive for OS in AHCI (mixture of other drives for data)
ATI Radeon HD4850
Windows 7 x64
(all stock settings, no overclocking of any kind)
Avira Antivir (free version)
Comodo firewall
UAC at max...
Due to the nature of SSDs, it practically makes no difference if your file is fragmented. Also IIRC, due to wear-leveling used by your SSD, you can't exactly defrag it like you'd defrag a non-SSD drive.
That was an older version. Here's a recent screenshot of my entire window (1440x900, no cropping). I like this setup - like Chrome, it gives me a lot of real estate to work with.
The status bar is auto-hidden. It appears whenever my cursor hovers over a link, or if my cursor moves to the...
Browsers like Chrome and (gasp) IE are multithreaded, so each tab is an independent process. This spreads your tabs across all your cores.
7-zip is multi-threaded, as is Paint.NET
Background:
My system currently looks like this:
400GB OS drive with W7 x64 (only ~40GB full after months of bloating)
400GB drive for torrents, downloads, STEAM games and other games
1.5TB - TV, music and other data
1.5TB - movies and other data
Every three weeks or so, I image my OS...
While I find it hard to trust an AV made by Microsoft, I've been hearing good things about MSE. Personally, I've been on Avira for the last few years. Very good detection rates, low memory and CPU footprint.
If you just want to run utorrent.exe without going thru the install process, make a shortcut for the .exe, then change the path from "Z:\utorrent.exe" (example) to "Z:\utorrent.exe /noinstall"
Windows Vista and 7 use SuperFetch, a feature that uses free RAM as a cache. Since accessing RAM is usually faster than accessing the page file on your HDD, there is a slight performance boost when you throw in extra RAM.
If you decide to run with 4GB, you may also consider setting aside...
Agreed x2 because OP's attending the MD wedding.
Edit: $800 on a hotel for 3 days in this economic climate? I think you should stay in a slightly more reasonable hotel or ask your sister-in-law to foot the bill.
