It's true that the 8500 is faster than the 8400 but only slightly. It's 3.16GHz as opposed to 3.0GHz. That's a whopping 5% more performance for applications that will fully utilize the speed and you will pay 42% more money for it. I think it's just foolish to buy the 8500 personally.
Although 3.6GHz is probably not too stressful on that chip and since you already knew the rest of your components could handle it based on the previous settings it's not a good practice to overclock a new chip right off the start like that. Take note of your old settings and start from default...

Well that's the thing, it affects some users and not others over a wide variety of systems. No one has ever really figured out exactly what causes it as far as I know. The solutions listed don't work for everyone.
Enjoy the quad. Just don't skimp on the vid card to pay for the more expensive CPU. The vid card is much more important for gaming performance since the extra two CPU cores will do little or nothing for gaming performance.

If you are using Windows XP be sure to download the latest drivers for the dual core. I can't recall details but there were some issues upgrading socket 939 systems from single core to dual core on Windows XP. With a clean install of Windows XP or with Vista it wouldn't be an issue.
I agree, spending good money to build up an X2 system from scratch is a waste. I can see dropping in a chip to an existing system but a new build? Don't waste your time and money on old tech.
