Vista upgrade question

I had a laptop last year that the screen busted on. I ended up parting out the entire laptop. I kept the sticker for the XP license for XP home. Am I able to use it to upgrade to Vista on my desktop? It is currently running Win2k, but I don't think there is an upgrade path for it to Vista...

In Amazon's rebate form, I didn't see anything about not applying to an account with a number ported to it. I would assume that would be a brand new account in Verizon's eyes.

slow file transfer from a xp to 2k

I'm trying to transfer a large amount of files from a XP Home computer to one running Win2k. Using a patch cable I can get the transfer to between 6-12% of 100Mbps. I remember transfers a couple of years ago going much faster (win2k to win2k). Is there a problem with winxp? I've uninstalled...

2001fp w/ ati 9200??

Everything runs at 1600x1200, but now my display will go blank after a period of time. I had my computer up and running for 30-40 minutes and when I clicked a link on the web, the display cutout. I know everything was still running because I was able to restart normally and I could still hear...

2001fp w/ ati 9200??

thanks, i was able to do the "reduce the dvi frequency" for ati cards. Is this something that all ati cards have problems with or just the 9200?

Does DVI really matter for LCDs or is VGA good enough?

Gnome 2.2

I'd like Gnome2.2, but I don't have the time or knowledge to go through the complete build of installing it and all the libraries that go along with it. Is there a 'fast' way to go about doing it? Like something simple. Thanks, Jason

linux newbie questions (redhat 8.0)

Morrowind on PC or Xbox?

Well I ended up buying for the xbox. I think I rather spend countly hours in front of a big tv and on a nice couch than at my desk in from of my computer. So far it's a cool game, but I think it's going to take lots of my time :)

HDTV and Xbox

Is there any reason why they did this? Apparently it's capable of outputting the format (i.e. the games), but why they chose not to support it for dvd playback is beyond me. I would think that if MS wanted the Xbox the center of entertainment, they would try to cut out the standard DVD player...

I plan on getting the HD kit for the Xbox for my Sony XBR that I'll be purchasing. I know certain games output HD format, but if I get the DVD playback kit for the Xbox, will DVD playback be outputted in 480p or 1080i mode?

Now Official: Microsoft cut XBox price down to $200 today (5/15)

Will the price drop actually occur on the 20th? I'm thinking of getting the Xbox at Best Buy this weekend and then doing a price match whenever the prices do drop. This should work, shouldn't it (assuming the price drop occurs within 30 days of when I purchase it)?

Opera takes up 36megs of RAM

I'll have to try this. I just checked and opera was using well over 100 MB of RAM. I generally leave the opera window open all the time, so this well help keep memory usage down even though it's not a big problem.

How do I input variables from the command line into a bash script? Right now I have a variable declared in the script that I have to change each time I run it and it would be nice to specify this variable through the command line as I run it.

anyone played bridge commander yet?

I'd like to know too. I'm at the same point. I usually end up getting killed, but I've played the mission probably for at least a half an hour. The mission fails and they have to get the people off the planet, but it seems to go on and on and the Khitomer doesn't do a thing.

Anyone use wireless lan?

How far away is the webserver going to be? Remember there is a limit to how far away it can be. This is even more of an issue if you are operating it at 11 mbps (which is the fastest 802.11b will do, theoritcally) and you have obstructions in the way (like if it's in the basement).

My main system is called 'jrw' my username/email from my university. It came about from my dorm days when we had a network on the floor even before the campus installed twisted pair. We had it running above in the tiles. It was much nicer when they installed it permanently. Made our jobs...

What's the maximum CPU upgrade for my old Jetway BX133 board?

Have you tried looking at its website for info or new BIOS revisions? I know my old BH6 was able to accept a 1GHz Celeron using a newer BIOS.
