Question Creative solutions? 2U HTPC build

We’ll… this Enermax Aquafusion 120 can’t seem to keep the temps down under full load. When trying to encode HEVC the CPU jumped from 32 to 100 C before I killed the process and shut it down. This is with a 32 C idle temp, fully open chassis, 3 80mm fans blowing the ambient air of 75 F around...

Question Creative solutions? 2U HTPC build

It looks like the Enermax Aquafusion 120 fits just fine, mostly because the pipes are flexible in terms of being able to rotate left/right on the cpu cooler. I'm leaving it out of the rack for a week to keep an eye on temps. So far my idle temps are around 32 C, about 40 C under normal loads.

Question Creative solutions? 2U HTPC build

I think this more flexible cooler will work better… a basic fan only provides about an inch of empty space whereas a radiator provies about 2.5 inches and sits behind a cool air intake. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082LK9YYQ?psc=1&smid=A2OFKT6GABPTWG&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp Although I would prefer...

Question Creative solutions? 2U HTPC build

Based on price/performance, I’m building an i5-26000k in a 2U rack mount form factor, but having trouble finding acooler that fits.. So space is fairly limited… and so are all the LGA 1700 coolers… needless to say, with my GIGABYTE B660M DS3H DDR4 motherboard, I’ve found some compatibility...

Question Router/Firewall + POE WiFi Access Points?

It’s the outdoor AP that has trouble. Inside, I get consistent 500-580 Mbps over WiFi, AFTER I optimized the APs. When on auto optimize I only maxed at 300 Mbps. After running RF scans and setting correct channels, width, and power, I’m able to reach advertised specs. There appears to be a...

Question Router/Firewall + POE WiFi Access Points?

So I’m all in with Ubiquiti, we’ll see how well it holds up. The outdoor UAP-AC-M is utter junk. I actually get better signal from my neighbors WiFi that is their house 200ft away. Anyhow, here are a few pics for all the other geeks out there...

Question Router/Firewall + POE WiFi Access Points?

Just to circle back a bit on an older thread, I have to say I'm impressed but also disappointed. Ubiquiti offers a 1 yr warranty, which means they don't stand behind what they sell. That sucks, but it is what it is. Tough when companies like Netgear stand behind their products. Doesn't mean...

    Question QoS Question

Gotcha, totally makes sense. I didn't realize it wouldn't kick in until congestion hit. Seems like QoS always made a difference for VOIP in my home network, but maybe that was just smoke/mirrors? I figured congestion would just always be there, not something that is maxed out but just in general...

Question Router/Firewall + POE WiFi Access Points?

I'm just not sure that in a home type of environment, with a basic modem, how anything above an old WRT54G wouldn't provide the necessary firewall protection. Nothing would handle a home connection against a DDos attack, so that's not the level of concern I have nor something I would try to...

Question Router/Firewall + POE WiFi Access Points?

This system has to be the best piece of technology I've ever owned or configured. So many small business type features. Assuming the hardware holds up, I'm able to cover a 3500sqft home with 2 APs instead of the 4 Google WiFi devices we had previously. Every click on the internet just moves...

    Question QoS Question

What I was talking about, could be wrong, but basically, you're providing the ISP with the packets you care about, sooner than all the other packets, due to QoS. It's providing the priority. Even though the ISP will handle based on their own network settings, you'll still send out the packets...

    Question QoS Question

I disagree, if you implement QoS, you're essentially able to route requests out at a potentially faster network rate since your traffic is prioritized. Meaning, if you had a specific port, application, etc.. that required full bandwidth (such as for gaming), then prioritize those packets. In...

    Question QoS Question

Any network related items you can introduce that improve packets, such as QoS, will help. You may not actually see it nor realize what's going on, but it helps a bit. It's less noticeable in home/low device networks, but still helpful. If the connection to your modem is being reduced due to...

Question Router/Firewall + POE WiFi Access Points?

So I ordered a UniFi Dream Machine Pro to go along with 3 POE WiFI APs and 1 POE Outdoor WiFi AP. Hope this doesn't turn out to be super cheap / low grade hardware... Seems like there's even an option to power cycle the modem when it detects loss of connection. I totally could see that being used.

Question Router/Firewall + POE WiFi Access Points?

It's a pretty hefty price jump between the 3100 and 5100. I called Netgate and they're really pushing the 5100, but mainly for the IPS/IDS related functionality, that doesn't seem like something I would be using. Talks about higher performing /different class of CPU. At the end of the day, as...

Question Router/Firewall + POE WiFi Access Points?

Thanks. I don't foresee any use cases for needing that level of security downstream from a home ISP. Thoughts? I do have some ports forwarded for various applications, such as AXIS Camera Station or Plex Server.

Thanks everyone. I did briefly look into running the Google WiFi behind my firewall/router and it didn't seem like that was actually supported. Question Router/Firewall + POE WiFi Access Points?

Thanks! I've only heard of Ubiquiti, but haven't actually done much research. I'll check them out and see what they have. I assume I could start my network with another router/DCHP (still TBD) and run ubiquiti separately to provide WiFi / access to the existing network?

Question Router/Firewall + POE WiFi Access Points?

I'm currently updating a fairly complex / device-rich network at our house. The new setup will be mostly hard wired, with POE runs to 2-3 areas for...

I'm having a lot of trouble finding a technical answer on a question that I feel should be a quick google search. I have a bunch of 23AWG 150+ft shielded Cat6a cable runs that I need to connect to a Cat6a specified patch panel. Is there an actual difference between a Cat6 Keystone, or Cat6...

Question Wired Zyxel Access Points for Gigabit WiFi?

Cameras are actually recording over a wired network (8 recordings 24x7 4k), it's only the streaming that tends to use WiFi regarding the cameras, so not super worried there. The only time true bandwidth can be hit is when transferring large files within the network. Most of that is all done...

Question Wired Zyxel Access Points for Gigabit WiFi?

Thanks for the read on MIMOI! My truck is bigger than your truck? Since wifi performance is already limited, I want to provide a bigger pipe/bandwidth so we're not seeing as bad of performance hits. Essentially, being able to burst up to speeds closer to the modem... as much as possible of...

Are you saying even the 3x3 APs, or Zyxel's 5gb bandwidth AP, devices wouldn't go beyond 433 over the 5g AC? Any comments on any of the Zyxel APs, outside of not being able to deliver exactly what I was hoping of? :(

Question Wired Zyxel Access Points for Gigabit WiFi?

I'll be running some networking wires in the house and thought it would be an excellent time to transition from Google WiFi's mesh based wireless system (4 devices to cover the house), to something completely hard wired - of course we still need WiFi... Nighthawk AC1900 - Repeater mode work?

Ah ok.. So we still utilize the nighhawk (for DHCP and hard wired connections where router is at), and then disable WiFi. Then place a bunch of these AP units around the house? Then we need a computer to act as the controller, which I assume would disable the WiFi once the computer restarts?

Nighthawk AC1900 - Repeater mode work?

    - I think that will work in this case, all new hardware. I guess I would only be out a router. I still wonder if there's a way to just add-on a device to accomplish this, even if it would be more expensive? Just some kind of standalone addon that turns a cat5 into the ability to repeat the...

Nighthawk AC1900 - Repeater mode work?

    - From quite a few comments over at Amazon, it sounded like it these devices work regardless of the router you're using. Or maybe they were referring to being able to Extend the signal, but not actually enable roaming?

Nighthawk AC1900 - Repeater mode work?

I'm ok running cables to get a better overall experience for the wireless users. With these Ubiquiti APs, since it's roaming, I am able to walk around the home while staying on a continuous network, right? I assume I just need to set the WiFi signal to run on the same channel. One of the...

Nighthawk AC1900 - Repeater mode work?

    - That's why those "just clone your SSID" devices simply don't work. The ones that actually boost/repeat the same signal, make a real difference. I figured there would be something readily available for the home market, especially with these newer/higher end routers.

Nighthawk AC1900 - Repeater mode work?

Is this really a complex request? I'm surprised there aren't more people chiming in here. With all these fake repeaters these days (most seem to just make a 2nd network), I would think more and more people would be wanting a continuous network.

Nighthawk AC1900 - Repeater mode work?

I want to purchase additional equipment. The house is around 8,000 sqft, mostly divided in the center. Based on the range of the nighthawk, I know where I would want to place a 2nd one. So location is not a problem.. it's more so the hardware I need. I don't want to try to tweak any other...
