well after diggin around the net... it seems like the max res on the dvi port is 1280 x 1024... if i hook it up to the analog output, im able to get 1650 x 1050. hope this helps anyone out..

Long story short... my monitor died but was still under warranty by Sony. They sent me a new monitor (19inch, 80 lbs). And I have to return the defective model, with the same specs.
