  1. Interview tomorrow...

From being an interviewer myself at a software company in the west coast, the recruiter is right. A nice button shirt or sweater, khakis or black slacks, and a nice pair of shoes (oxfords are fine). Suits would be overdoing it for a software position.
  2. Posting from Tokyo. Any questions?

How's the dengue fever shown on tv now? From two weeks ago, it had spread from Yoyogi Park to Shinjuku.
  3. So... thinking of leave grad school (long post warning)

It's your job to be a leader. It's his job to be a boss.
  4. Computer Science vs Electrical Engineering

Computer science, but that's because I had more interest in it. While there is some overlap, they are very much different. EE here focused more on circuitry, semiconductor physics, signals, and specialties like DSP. CS is more broad and higher level: machine learning, computer vision...
  5. What to bring back from Japan?

Any examples of Japanese smartphones that could turn a profit? The selection I see from Docomo and Softbank look just about the same as the US market. iPhone5's are now the craze over there.
  6. What to bring back from Japan?

Into gundam models? They're dirt cheap compared to the ones sold in the us. Buy them at bic camera or yodobashi (I recommend visiting them at least once. 7 stories of awesome electronics!) Clothes from uniqlo is also nice. G.U. Is the cheap alternative. You can also try global works. If you're...
  7. Best car for 8k, newbie driver?

Scion TC is a good pick. 8k sounds right for that many miles and that year. I would also consider the g35 (04+, same tranny and engine as the 350z) and the mazda3 (06+, few issues regarding the tranny and engine afaik). Both are good cars and reliable. If you want cheaper, 1.8L sentra, Xb, or...
  8. Can anyone read this Japanese for me?

"This product was made under quality control management, but if there are any defects, please return it to the store you bought it from. You can exchange it at any time."
  9. Fuu.. person parked next to mine scratched my car... what to do?

Dang, that's one crazy dent you had there Zap. Anyhow, to update, I contacted my apartment management, and they called her, but she said she wasn't at fault. While they were calling her, I was at a body shop getting an estimate, and they hand polished off almost all of the scratches and blue...
  10. Fuu.. person parked next to mine scratched my car... what to do?

My apartment has gated assigned parking, so luckily it's not a random person that scratched my car, it's the one with the stall next to mine. Anyhow, I noticed yesterday evening that my car had a 6 inch blue line across the back of my driver side mirror. Upon further inspection, I noticed the...
  11. Biking gurus: What do you think of this bike?

I would pay the $80 at a local bike shop to assemble it professionally. and has anyone noticed the tags? "schneider can't cycle?" lol
  12. [video] guy tracks down and confronts dude who stole his bike

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/166221456.html I wouldn't think it'd be fake if it's on the local news...
  13. Biking gurus: What do you think of this bike?

Meghan54 has great points about the bike. If you want cheap, go on your local craigslist. I was able to snag this bike (was sold on BD before) http://www.cyclesmercier.com/big_corvusal.html for $250 the other day. The thing about BD bikes is that their price plummets over time because they're...
  14. [video] guy tracks down and confronts dude who stole his bike

If it's only 140 miles to recover a $2,500 bike? I'd do it. Portland to Seattle isn't that far, especially the U-District where he confronted the guy. That said, the bike parts may be common, but he can easily verify the serial number with the Performance Bike shop in the U-District, which I...
  15. ot enjoying it.

    Mba... Mba...
  16. Salary for new engineer with MS. To be specific- intel

Sounds good. I don't see what you're concerned about. The friends I know that work at Intel get paid between 65k-75k fresh out of college with a BS.
  17. How can a Judge order you to pay money you don't have

I've been receiving restitution from a bicycle thief that I had bought a stolen bicycle from. My first restitution paycheck was $0.42, and my second one was for $0.02. Needless to say, I probably won't be getting the full amount back in my lifetime.
  18. 9 Hours overnight layover in Haneda, Japan. WWYD?

How about visiting a sports bar in Roppongi? lol
  19. Going to puget sound/seattle

I agree with the others, Point Defiance Zoo isn't worth the 40 mile drive if you're going to Woodland Park Zoo. The Ballard Locks is also nice to see this time of year (as someone else pointed out, and the Troll is on the way). Some other suggestions: Red Mill Burger (near Woodland Park Zoo)...
  20. Japan and South Korea

I would take advantage of the bullet train pass available only to foreigners... And.. Order soup in south Korea and say it tastes like miso soup.
  21. Official NHL playoffs 2012 thread

  22. How to get further in job?

QFT. The $20+/hr internships are usually cs tough. Mine were $14-$18.
  23. Anyone starting grad school this fall?

I'm actually flying out this weekend to determine whether I should go to grad school this year or not. They offered me a two-year fellowship too, so it might be too hard to pass up!
  24. Once again, the Chinese have outdone the Americans

The video responses are very interesting... :hmm:
  25. Visiting Seattle -- What to do?

Morton's is a great place for steak. Japonessa is a great place for sushi. If you're looking for conveyor belt sushi, go to Sushiland. FYI, we're slated for rain all week. Also, don't go across the 520 if you want to visit Bellevue.
  26. Professor out of Money?

I knew a grad student that did his undergrad in a university in the C9 League who had to pay two years of his PhD because his project ran out of funding. His TA was only for two quarters. So, if you can't get funding via RA/TA, you're probably out of luck.
  27. 9th Annual Tax Thread - 2011

It does become quite an issue lol. Thanks for the response. I think I'm still having issues determining the following however: 1) Since I did move out into an apartment for the entire tax year, can my parent's home still be considered the principal residence? 2) Does the...
  28. 9th Annual Tax Thread - 2011

For 2011, I've been living in my own apartment, paid my own bills, took out student loans for the 2010-2011 academic year, and paid my tuition for my final quarter. My parent's provided $1000 in financial support when I was short on paying my bills, and kept me on their...
  29. Casual laptop bag for a guy?

Why not just get a timbuk2 messenger bag? Example: http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/d-lux-bondage-laptop-messenger
  30. Shutting down laptop kills wireless network

After a lot of googling, I still don't know what's going on. My girlfriend's laptop has a Lenovo thinkpad with a RTL8192CE (supposedly?) chipset. The router we're using is an all-in-one SMC SMCD3GNV router/cable modem/etc from Comcast. The problem is that when we turn off her laptop...

  32. How to talk my 17 year old son out of buying a camaro

I would've thought the insurance discussion would be enough to get the point across. If anything, 17 is a good age for him to keep saving money for college. If it was me, I'd sponsor 50% of the car if he buys the civic as long as he saves the other 50% for college.
  33. Best schools for CS in California?

IMO, the UW CSE programs prepares people to do lower level programming, but the majority of their classes are still CS (if not, all). Many people in CSE that I know only skimmed the surface of hardware, only to realize hardware was not for them and sticking with software. CS/CSE majors usually...
  34. Best schools for CS in California?

So, you ready to transfer to UW-Bothell? lolololol. To be more serious, if you get a 2.6 in MATH 124/125/126/307/308/390, it's going to put a big dent on your application. The fact you got a 2.9 in another class, I assume your UW GPA at the moment is not above 3.0. I hope you're in the midst...
  35. Networking vs GPA

A, as long as you meet the minimum qualifications.

  37. any mountain/road bikers out there?

To add to the list: http://www.ebikestop.com/ http://www.niagaracycle.com/ I usually buy stuff online that's overpriced at my LBS's (e.g. brake pads, name plates for shifters, etc). I've bought quite a bit at Performance Bike and Recycled Cycles though.

  40. College professors don't make that much....

From what I hear from professors, getting tenure means working very hard for the first 6-7 years. It pays off though if you did things right. Most CSE and EE professors I know that still does research makes at least 116-180k. The school is top 10 in CS and top 20 (or 30?) in EE though. The...
