    CRT to LCD Resolutions

I have been holding out and still running 19" CRTs on all of my computers. However, I am intending to start my migration to LCDs. I hope that one of the knowledgeable individuals that already use LCDs can answer these questions pretty easily: 1) Resolution scaling and gaming. My video...

    Overclocking Madness

Hi all, I have been through this before on this forum. But this X-bit Lab's article brings into question the actual practicality of cpu performance vs game play - indirectly translated in my mind to, "Do I want to overclock my cpu?" (and yes I understand the hobby/fun rational). That is not...

    Chaintech VNF4 Bios and Overclocking

Good catch. My mistake. I am running a beta V6.0 that Chaintech provided on my VNF4. I am surprised that they have not released it on the bios download site. I have had absolutely no probems with it and the overclocking function works correctly again.

    i really hate steam

I hope that everyone realizes that Gabe's goal is to immulate the WOW model - translated they want Valvel to produce "Episodic Games" about every quarter and charge $15-$20 per game. This equates to about $120 for the equivalent of Half Life 2 - what a deal. The new business model in...

Battlefield 2 Will need 2GB of ram.

I think 1.5gb will work just as well as 2gb in BF2. Interesting note, while in a BF2 game I alt+tab out to check the task manager and it showed a peak value of 4529635 (4GB?). I am not sure what to make of this...

Battlefield 2 Will need 2GB of ram.

My experience: OK, I installed the two new DDR3200 modules, now I have 512MBx4. The bios defaulted to 333, but I changed it to 400. I also had to move to 2T. Which is a big deal for memory bandwidth (you lose about ~1GB/s from 5600MB/s to 4800MB/s). However, it does not appear to...

    Chaintech VNF4 Bios and Overclocking

Just a heads up that the Bios V6.0 and 512MBx4 works fine at DDR400. I did fall to 2T so the memory throughput dropped from 5609/5529 to 4853/4873 using Sandra's memory bandwidth test. However, the impact on all 3DM(01,03, & 05) is negligible. So, my expanded cache for BF2 and FEAR is a...

    i really hate steam

Steam is a two edge sword. The Good: You don't have to worry about finding the disk to run the game or maintining upgrades (since they are automatic). The Bad: You can't run the game without steam, HL2 pricing on Steam is too high, Steam should not be running all the time (yes, I know I can...

What's better: FarCry or Half Life 2 ?

The open feel, draw distance, and challenge of Far Cry was better then Half Life 2. I am also not a fan of Steam. Valve seems to want to screw everyone who bought the game at retail. On top of that why didn't Valve discount the game when selling it from their site as a download? I was able...

    X800xl + Battlefield2 + 2005fpw

Preti9cboi, I run 1280x960 with everyting high except shadows and light at medium using ATI 5.8 drivers. I find it very hard to distinguish "improvement" (in terms of video quality) when you go to a higer resolution like 1600x1200. In a fast moving FPS anything above 1024x768 is icing on...

Hi all, Just wanted to let you in on my experience. I upgreaded to Bios V5.0 on 7/27/2005 (I did it during a reboot using "Alt+F2" with the .bin file on a FD). Anyhow everything went fine, except when I tested overclocking I could only get the HTT frequency to 240-250MHz before my...

    2GB using 512MBx4 Memory Question

Thanks for the quick and specific input. I have read that the impact of 2T vs 1T is only 2% on performance. If that is the case then the memory buffer gain I get should out weigh the performance hit. Would you agree?

    2GB using 512MBx4 Memory Question

I am very interested in upgrading my system from 1GB (512MBx2) to 2GB (512MBx4). However, I would like some feedback from anyone that may have done this. Can you answer the following questions for me: 1. Do all four modules have to be EXACTLY the same (brand / timing)? 2. Will the DDR...

Battlefield 2 Will need 2GB of ram.

The X800XL works fine in Battlefield 2. I currently use it and the game runs fine (with initial hesitation the first x seconds in the game while map details load). The REAL issue with the 2GB vs 1GB should be eliminating hard disk access or minimizing it. I am very sure that going from...

I am interested in also upgrading to 2GB (4x512 - currently I have 2x512 Corsair XMS C2). I have two questions: 1) Does the CAS automatically go to 2.5 with four modules? 2) If so, can you just use Value Select modules for the other two which have 2.5 CAS and save me $30? Besides...

    The Power Supply Conundrum

OK, I concede - you guys are right. If you do the calculation. The 3.3V line typically has 28 amps max = 92.4 watts max. The 12V line is typically 18+ amps max = 216 watts max. Since the P4 and Athlon64 have a TPD over 100 watts each this makes sense. What is shocking is think how much...

    The Power Supply Conundrum

Why would you want to regulate the 12V rail down to 1.xV for a CPU. Think of the heat the regulator would generate. Whatever, Please provide me with a link that supports your statement that Athlon64/Pentium4 use the 12V rail. Thanks!

    X800XL too much for a Barton 3200+??

I went back and re-read your original question. If you REALLY want to play HL2 at 1600x1200 - I don't believe any of the GPU's you are looking at will cut it because they will be CPU limited. I faced a delima similar to yours, I wanted HL2 and Far Cry to work at 1280x1024 with everything...
