I use Carbonite www.carbonite.com
It's super easy to use and set up. They offer unlimited backup from local drives for a flat rate annual fee. They also recently added some remote access features but I haven't tried this yet.
I'm still looking around but the little Acer unit looks nice.
I did try streaming a high bit-rate file across the network tonight from another PC and everything playing without any glitches - so network speed should be fine...
Wow, that sounds like a beautiful setup. Off topic... but do you do any online backup? I've used Carbonite with my main system but I don't think their service covers NAS.
Great feedback. Definitely has me thinking about things. I'm definitely leaning towards some sort of home server setup. I'm not worried about transcoding as I have a couple of i7 920 machines at home that I use for day to day stuff.
I like the small size of the Acer server. I could put...
I came across a NAS speed comparison at:
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_nas/Itemid,190
It looks like the WD NAS is fairly far down the list. I'm not sure if the 8TB version is any faster but I'm a little concerned that this may not be fast enough to stream Blu-rays...
I definitely would be worried about losing all data if one drive went down. You KNOW that it will eventually happen....
As a RAID 5 I think the 8TB version would offer 6TB of storage - correct?
I'm interested in setting up a NAS that I can use to rip my Blu-ray collection to and then stream the content to my HTPC via my home network and playback the content using a combination of My Movies and PowerDVD9 Ultra.
It seems the WD 8TB NAS...
Using the Lian LI PC-C33B case, I got the rig built on Friday. GOOD NEWS - the Radeon 5870 fit without having to make an mods to the case. It was close but it fit perfectly.
The Lian LI looks to be a really good option for someone wanting this card in a HTPC type case. The case has a lot...
I use the Badaboom application to re-encode videos for iPod, PSP, and Zune HD and have been really impressed by the speed of the encodes using one of my GTX280's.
It seems CUDA however remains largely untapped, yet has so much great potential.
What does NVIDIA plan in the future in terms...
I was on the auto-notify list for an ASUS Radeon 5870 at newegg and they came in yesterday. I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger:
I ordered the:
Lian Li PC-C33B
ASUS 5870
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro 700 RS-700
LG Blu-ray burner
I have a 2TB Hitachi drive coming from Dell and a...
I poked around Newegg for a while and came up with this case: LIAN LI Black Aluminum PC-C33B ATX Media Center Link. It seems that this may be a little bigger than the Silverstone. Perhaps an easier fit for the 5870?
The Panzerbox case looks really nice but unfortunately will be too tall for where I need to house it. Any other options for a large, horizontally orientated case?
Thanks for the feedback - that's really helpful. I'm not dead set on the Silverstone case, but it sounds like it should work if pull out the center HD cage. Four hard drives will be more than enough - likely only start with two. The Lian Li case looks nice as well.
I'm looking to build a gaming/HTPC hybrid machine. This will be hooked up in my living room to a 58" Panasonic plasma that I also use for gaming.
Ideally I'd like to use a Radeon 5870, although I would consider a 5850 if I can't get the 5870 to fit. The case I'm looking at is the...
A few weeks ago I decided to upgrade on of my machines to Core i7 and bought a ASUS P6T Deluxe V2. I've had ASUS and Evga boards in the past but I was blown away by how nice this board is. It was super easy to build the system with it and everything "just worked". I haven't maxed out the...
Interesting stuff.
I've been playing around with Badaboom this past week and have been really impressed with how much faster I can encode video using my GTX280.
The developers seem to be continually working on Badaboom, trying to improve it. I've encoded a number of DVD's that will...
Unfortunately my EVGA 680i MB doesn't work with the quad core 45nm processors, only the dual cores, which limits upgrade options.
Based on the comments, I'm definitely going to hold off on the upgrade for now. I'm going to play around a little pushing the overclock on my Zalman aircooled...
I currently have a system with:
E8400 at about 3.2 GHz
EVGA 280GTX
EVGA 680i motherboard (not compatible with quad-core Wolfdale)
4GB OCZ Gold RAM
Windows Ultimate 32bit OEM
I'm thinking of upgrading to:
Core i7 920
Asus P6T Deluxe X58
Patriot Viper 6GB-12800 DDR3
Windows...
eVGA has really impressed me. They offered a nice deal earlier this year for people who wanted to upgrade their 680 motherboards to a 780.
I just did their trade up program with a 8800gtx I bought recently. I did two 8800 GTX's in SLI for a while but didn't like some of the limitations -...
Ok - maybe I have to be more patient... :)
I installed the Grid demo and tried it this morning. It also runs great. It seems to be running the same game engine as Dirt but you get a lot more vehicles on the screen in Grid.
For fun, I also tried the demo on the PS3 and it looked and ran...
NRollo - how long does it take for your system to switch from non-SLI to SLI mode when you select it in the control panel? (ie. does it happen more or less instantaneously or does it take a bit).
Also - installed Race07 - runs well in SLI but not the best looking title (especialy after...
I tried "Dirt" and it runs fantastic under SLI. 1920x1200 - all options maxed - no slowdown at all.
It ran well with one 8800GTX but had occasional hiccup, but under SLI its butter.
Alright - rushed home but card wasn't there. Happily about 10 minutes after I got home the UPS man showed up!
The card is an EVGA 8800GTX and with using the Google checkout on Buy.com was about $350 (no tax or shipping) and then there is an additional $50 mail in rebate.
I went and...
I have a large Silverstone case with some extra case fans. Hopefully it will be ok - if not I'll have to look at some additional cooling options.
Right now I'm taking a break from WoW. I agree that the single 8800GTX was plenty, but likely I'll go back to it once the next expansion is...
I did know that dual monitors are not supported in SLI mode - but wasn't aware of needing to reboot, so good to know.
I usually end up rebooting before a gaming session anyways, as usually this helps smooth things out a bit. I used to like alt-tabbing out of WoW when I was playing to check...
I've been looking carefully at the 9800GX2 and 8800GTX SLI benchmarks and for the most part they are pretty close. I therefore decided to add a second 8800GTX card to my rig and go SLI.
There are some pretty good deals on 8800GTX's right now, and I was able to get a eVGA 8800GTX for $350...
I upgraded from a BFG 7950GT OC to a BFG 8800GTX OC2 today. I did this mainly b/c of Bioshock.
I am absolutely amazed at the difference. I was able to up the rez in Bioshock to 1920x1200 wtih everthing enabled. The game looked so much better and the framerate was liquid.
I tried the demo on both my 360 and my PC.
I have a pretty nice setup for my 360 - a 52 Sharp LCD and DefTech surround system. The game looks beautiful and played very smoothly on the 360 with my sitting on the couch, but... I couldn't stand the controls. With a mouse and keyboard it would...
This isn't a problem, but I wasn't sure where else to post. I've also liked the format of the graphs used in the video and CPU reviews and was wondering what software is used to create them.
Thanks in advance.
The Shure SE530PTH/E500PTH are expensive but amazing. I have used a number of different Shure earphones (E2c, E3c) and they are all quite good but the E500PTH's are absolutely amazing for music.
I have a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort's but they are collecting dust right now because the Shure's...
I have had to RMA a BFG card. Their support was outstanding - took care of the problem and sent me a brand new card with absolutely no hassle. That convinced me to stick with BFG for my next card purchase.
I've been looking at this issue very carefully myself recently. I am using at 7950GT OC which still runs most things I play quite well at 1900x1200. I play a lot of WoW (use 2xAA at 1900x1200 - everything else maxed), Titan Quest, CoH, and some others.
I have been debating going to a 8800...
Do you have two monitors attached?
I've had this problem after I attached a second monitor. Somehow I fixed it by disconnecting and reconnecting it. This was with an nVidia card though.
