    Quick trip into the past:

Hi, I just checked my junk boxes and ran across a bunch of Zilog Z80s and somebody's 8008. Jim

    Amplifying PC speaker.

Hi, Runes has a good idea there, but don't use the same two pins you would use for a speaker. That's pin 1 to the speaker and pin 4 to +5. That usually shuts your PSU down! Use pin 1 as signal and pin 3 ground (return). Works OK that way and should drive most any amplifier. Good Luck, Jim

I've got some questions about UPS units from APC..

Hi Mon, There seems to be a misconception in the description of your 1. The first type of UPS runs the AC straight to the output connectors and switches the converter on only when the AC goes out. The second type runs the converter at all times from the same supply that is charging the battery...

    Creating Network...

Hi, The Lord is correct as usual. Compare the connectors on a cable. Held the same way a straight thru cables wire colors are lined up the same. Crossed cable wires do not line up the same. Shades of Serial communication of the past. I solved that one with a switch and two leds. When both leds...

Found a free UPS with dead battery

Hi, I think Dawn is correct about the "Black thing". It reminds me aslo of a "CUP CORE" a torodial wannabe. Cheaper and easier to wind than a toroid. Switching Power Supplies make use of Torodial transformers for efficiency. Jim

Found a free UPS with dead battery

Hi, If the charger Voltage measured across the battery is same polarity as the battery and about 13.5 to 14.5 volts then the charger is working. If your multimeter can handle up to about 10 amps then it might be worth it to check the charge current. I think he has already established that the...

Speaker plug & temp monitoring freeware

Hi, It's not so much that the Case Speaker is small and of poor quality, the amplifier is one transistor sending a square wave to the speaker. Only good enough to make a noise. It can be programed to make different beeps, but it's not worth the trouble. Jim

Antec PSU retaining power after shutdown?

Hi, Some PSUs do that. It's residual voltage still stored in the Filter Capacitors. It bleeds off in a few seconds. Jim

Found a free UPS with dead battery

Hi Nobb, Don't really understand. The computer etc. does not run off the battery when the UPS is plugged in and the AC Power is good. Sounds like it's always running on the battery and the charger can not keep up. UPSs usually use a relay, usuallysolid state, to switch from AC to Batt operation...

Formatting My Book Premium Hard Drive

Hi, The Lord is correct as usual. The file is Autorun.Inf. It contains an entry "Open= 'the executable to run'". Can contain a lot of other useful commands. For example "Icon='The Icon to show in the Directory'". Search for Autorun for more details. Good Luck, Jim

I'm confused about storing Litium Ion batteries

Hi, Don't freeze any rechargable battery. Just put them in the refrigerator where it's about 40 degrees F. Self discharge increases with temperature. Keeping them cool reduces the self discharge. They still go down only not quite as fast. Works with any battery. Good Luck, Jim

Found a free UPS with dead battery

Hi again Nobb, No good to test the batt leads when they are disconnected. What really matters is what you get with the batt connected. Probably you would get voltage on the leads without the batt, but the charger may be an "Intellegent" type and thinks the batt voltage is way up with the batt...

    Dual Monitors possible?

Hi, You can buy video cards with dual VGA outputs or better. Some systems will also let you run two video cards. Don't know all the details, but someone will probably have the info you are asking for. Good Luck, Jim

Is there a basic formula or program that gives AMD PR values?

Hi, Some AMD processors are designated with numbers like 1400+ etc. They do not clock at 1.4 Gigs but the 1400+ clocks at around 900 MHZ. AMD's claim is that they process as fast as an Intel 1.4 Gig due to more efficient coding. There is not an exact formula. The easiest way to find out is to go...

Found a free UPS with dead battery

Hi, Have you checked to see if the UPS's charger is working? There should be about 13.5 to 4.5 volts across the battery when the charger is on. That is if the batt is good. MAYBE! Jim

    Anti-Static bags?

Broke 2 pins off on CPU

Hi, If those pins are one on each of two corners then they may have never been there. Older processors left off one pin on one corner to act as a "KEY" so you couldn't put it in wrong. Later ones (Socket 478 etc) left off one on each of two corners. Look again. Do you see a tiny gold colored dot...

2 CPU Cores, How can you tell which is being utilized?

Hi, X is correct. One processor/core is designated as Master. It delegates jobs to the other core when it has more than it can handle. I would worry more about how much memory I had than the processors. If you are running more than your memory can hold you will get a lot of swapping to the hard...

    Exploding DELL laptops.

Hi, Batteries usually only explode when being charged. If you are charging it on the plane then it probably can explode. Most or all laptop batts have a themal cutout to stop the charging if the batt gets too hot. The cutout could be the wrong temperture or defective. Jim

Do HP computers use a standard sized power supply?

Hi, I'm looking at a HP Pavilion 533w that I'm scrapping out right now. It has the screw pattern reversed on the back of the case. A standard PSU may fit upside down if there is no external fan. It's also a non standard shape, but other than the screw hole reversal may fit OK. Maybe someone else...

    Anti-Static bags?

Hi Navid, You have some real good ideas there but you do not understand how a conductive material protects the board. It will contact the board but does not have to. It conducts the static electricity around the board. No spark will jump to the board. The foil will be at the same potential as...

    Overheating problems on a P4 3.4

Hi, I'm in the process of testing about 10 mother boards and 4 processors. Moving the processors pointed up the fact that the Heat Sink can be put on wrong on some older boards Socket 370 for sure. Some HSs have a ridge at one end and some have it on both ends. On those you have to make sure...

    Boot Up

Hi, If the E: drive is not a boot drive then no way will it boot. If it's a HDrive it would have to have Command.com, a visible file and IO.sys plus Msdos.sys both hidden. They are required for a drive to boot. Format /s would have put them on. SYS C: would add them from DOS and XP probably has...

    Constant Brown outs

Hi, Most PSUs have always been rated from about 90 volts to 150 VAC. Brown outs will probably go below that. Usually no real damage is done unless a drive is being written to and then only to the file that was being written. Of course anything is possible. My engineers always said "Electronics...
