    Xeon for workstations

There's no reason to do watercooling. My dual Xeon E5 box runs quietly and stays cool on air.

    Xeon for workstations

I would suggest going with a Xeon just to get support for ECC memory which it sounds like you should be using if you do that sort of work on your machine.

Excel speed test comparison against an FX-8350

I just re-ran the benchmark on my dual Xeon system and set Excel to use 4 threads only and set the affinity to match so that it would Turbo up to 2.80GHz (the max) and this was the result: 2 x 2.0GHz Xeon E5-2650 - 48.01 ± 0.19 s Core - Sandy Bridge - EP Turbo - 2.80GHz # Cores - 16 (8 Per...

Excel speed test comparison against an FX-8350

Here is some new data for your benchmark results from a wide variety of architectures. It is highly dependant on clock speed rather than cores which can easily be seen by the dual-core i5-680 @ 3.733GHz smoking my dual 8-core Xeon E5-2650 @ 2.40GHz system. There also seems to be a huge...

    Input on low budget CPU

I built my parents a Mini-ITX box for just this kind of work. It was a dual-core Intel Atom HT 330 and an NVIDIA ION. It does its job quietly and perfectly all day long while sipping power. Yes, it will play HD YT vids because of the ION chip. They love it and think it is plenty fast enough for...

How long is Core 2 Duo going to be relevant?

I am running a Dell Latitude E6400 with a 3.066GHz C2D-M T9900 with 8GB of RAM and an SSD. It handles my tasks with ease; productivity tasks and some programming. When I am running on battery I usually lock the cores down to 800MHz and it is still plenty of power. I have no plans to upgrade to...

Intel Core i7-3930K vs Xeon E5-2630 For Long-duration Financial Calculations

Yeah, and what's crazy is they are the cheapest 8-core models! I just built it for fun as an earlier Christmas and graduation present. ;) That HP looks nice. I would almost certainly say you could upgrade the RAM and add in a GPU without warranty trouble.

Intel Core i7-3930K vs Xeon E5-2630 For Long-duration Financial Calculations

No problem. :) I am running dual 8-core 2.0GHz Xeon E5-2650's. Just built it less than a week ago! Well, the i7-3930K and that Xeon should perform exactly the same. However, it does seem to be hard to find. Personally, I would much rather have it than the E3-1275 v2. It might even be around...

Intel Core i7-3930K vs Xeon E5-2630 For Long-duration Financial Calculations

I just threw together a sample workbook that contains millions of cells; apart from some static cells that the computing cells reference, they are completely independent of each other meaning it should multi-thread perfectly. I tested it using varying numbers of threads and recorded the time it...

Intel Core i7-3930K vs Xeon E5-2630 For Long-duration Financial Calculations

Like the guys before me have said, ECC memory is worth it in your situation. I was using an i7-980X EE which is a 6-core Gulftown vs. a 6-core SB-E for the i7-3930. Both address 12 threads via Hyper-Threading, so the architectural differences do not matter.

Intel Core i7-3930K vs Xeon E5-2630 For Long-duration Financial Calculations

I've played around with the different versions and Excel 2007/2010 show almost perfect scaling with threads. Using either of them will be considerably, if not multiple times, faster than using 2003.

Intel Core i7-3930K vs Xeon E5-2630 For Long-duration Financial Calculations

Your best bet, if you are worried the E3-1275 v2 won't be enough in the future, is to grab a dual-socket LGA-2011 board and and one E5-26xx processor so that you can add another Xeon later. Just don't get the E5-2637 (dual-core); the E5-2603 and E5-2609 are quad-cores but lack Hyper-Threading...

Intel Core i7-3930K vs Xeon E5-2630 For Long-duration Financial Calculations

Your workbook sounds like it could be well multi-threaded. However, despite the i7-3630K being around 29% faster in pure multi-threaded calculation than the E3-1275 v2, the extra piece of mind from the ECC memory of the Xeon would be worth the lost performance to me. I mean, you are going to be...

Intel Core i7-3930K vs Xeon E5-2630 For Long-duration Financial Calculations

I don't know how your workbook is set up, but for the sake of argument let's say you have 16 columns containing prices and you need to sum each column and then average those sums. Simple, I know, but the idea works. ;) Excel can begin the summation of each column independently. So, if your...

Intel Core i7-3930K vs Xeon E5-2630 For Long-duration Financial Calculations

Excel 2010 can use all 32-threads of my dual Xeon box. So, you don't need to worry about Excel not being able to handle it. :) However, just remember that if X number of cells are calculated based on a previously calculated value of a single cell you have effectively removed your multi-threaded...
