Playing Unreal Tournament 2004 in college

I work as an admin for a ResNet (RESidential NETwork), so I feel qualified to respond. :) Disclamer: I work at a public university. My comments here apply to most other public institutions. Private schools often work differently in these regards, mainly due to differing organizational...

Can't get 10/100 switch to work

What brand are the NICs? Are they 10/100, or just 10? Are they set to autonegotiate the speed and duplex, or are they set to 10-half? Are you sure the SMC switches are 10/100 autosensing?

Is it possible to assign terminal service client in a GPO?*Update*YES

I'm not sure about the GPO, but you can pull the software off of X:\WINNT\system32\clients\tsclient\win32\disks\disk1. ie: start->run-> \\server\admin$\system32\clients\tsclient\win32\disks\disk1\

formatting with FAT32 over 32GB partition?

MS is insisting that you use NTFS for such a large drive (>32GB). "Insisting" is a dubious word in this situation too. It's more like forcing you to use NTFS. If you really really want to use FAT32, you gotta use fdisk from Win9X.

    Gigabit over copper

Xanathar: The part # is WS-G5482 and here's the link: Cisco 1000-T GBIC Thanks for the general comments. I'm not looking to get near 1000Mbps from it, just at least 250 or so. A new server is probably in the scope for next year, not the current one. So going Gig now would provide some relief...

    Gigabit over copper

We are looking to give our file server a boost by installing a gigabit card into it, currently it runs 100BT. The switch it will connect to is a Catalyst 3548-XL, so we can either use 1. copper or 2. SX laser. The copper option looks nice since we can get the GBIC and NIC for ~$450. The SX...

Post SP6a Security Rollup released for NT4

For those who don't know, Microsoft isn't releasing a SP7 for NT4, instead they've been promising a "Security Rollup" of fixes since SP6a was released. Well, it's now here since there is a fairly large hole in RPC that requires all NT/2000 machines to be patched. The security rollup...

Have very easy question to be answered about Win2k (versions) 5 CAL or 10 CAL related

CALs are Client Access Licenses and are generally just a piece of paper that comes w/ Server as proof that you can have that many clients attach to the Server. You should see something in the manual. from the guy saying how many CALs there are included. If there aren't any, then assume he's...

Citrix ICA... - Tuning & Stuff

LOL. ICA is pretty sweet if you're on a LAN. Are you on a LAN, or over a WAN link? Is that the server specs or the workstation specs? Out of the box, ICA is fast over a LAN.

800Mbits of bandwidth using port trunking on an SMC switch?

The trunking they show is with a total of four ports. Since each port is 200Mbps (100 full duplex), 4x200=800Mbps. You can't get more than 100Mbps on one connection in one direction, but between the swtiches, yes there is 800 Mbps. Looks like, from their pdf, you could have just two ports...

The only private address space starting with 192 is 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255. Any others are OK. As to why you are having issues, sounds like your routing tables got screwed up. Have you rebooted at all?

I get 10.0MB/sec (80Mbps) with netcps. This was between: 400Mhz Celeron, 224MB RAM, WinME 800Mhz P3, 512MB RAM, Win2000 both w/ 3c905b's - latest drivers running through a cheap-o Addtron 5-port switch. Another program I use is iperf. It allows you to play with TCP windows sizes, use UDP...

    Internet Solution for College

Find a tier 1 ISP and get a T3? That would be pretty cool. Probably expensive though. In Wisconsin, the UW system pays $5500/Mbit, which is supposedly a fair rate for bandwidth. That would be around $250K/year for a T3. Our access is provided by Genuity.

    Anyone running a Citrix Server?

150 users? You had better think of 4-5 servers of: Dual P3 900Mhz 2GB RAM 18GB RAID 1 or RAID 5 with Citrix load balancing services, and possibly RMS. Having many servers gives redundancy that two or so uber-boxes can't give. Also consider having a dedicated machine (highish-end desktop) as...

    Windows 2000 Pro + McAfee 4.5 = sloooooooooooow

Turn off the System Scan and leave on the Email, Internet, and Download scans. This will fix your slow downs, and keep you safe from downloading something nasty. I had the same problem, Eudora would take 4-5 seconds to open until I disabled the System scan. Then it was ~.5 seconds or so. Fast.

What is the Best cpu/mobo for Win2000 server running 24/7 in las vegas!

If your game server was going to serve UT/Q3 (or similar) for many people (>6) then I would probably rule out the PPro. Just not enought juice to support that many, comfortably. The 550/BP6 setup would do nicely for that. In fact, I used to run a few UT servers off of a BP6 system using...

Does anyone have a network that works?!!?

You must realize that there are other factors effecting the network transfers. One possibility is the speed of your hard drives. Slower drives and interfaces can barely write at 3-4MB/sec. Another can be the programs you're using. I've always used WS-FTP but it's not as fast as the CLI ftp...

    rare RAID 1 setup

I've heard that the stripe size should be equal to the cluster size. NTFS has a cluster size of 4KB so that's what I set my RAID 1 stripe size to.

    where is the registry stored?

Under win9x, it's both user.dat and system.dat. User.dat supplies the info stored in HKEY_CURRENT_USER. System.dat is the rest. Same is true for NT, however user.dat is specific to the user logged in and is stored in their home folder. It also carries the name ntuser.dat.

Yes, both server editions of Win2000 have TS. I think even Datacenter will have TS, but I doubt someone would use that. jsbush, you must have MS TS CALs to connect to the TS. They are separate from regular NT CALs. Just FYI. Unless you plan to run it in admin mode. The server includes the...

It's an HP server board, I'll check the chipset and stuff when I open my next server today. I guess I never thought about checking that part out! Can't be GX, cause it runs Cumines (unless GX can do those). What else could it be? Maybe a Serverworks? Hmmm.... I'll find out in a bit!

Why use telnet if you're going to use terminal services? You get two free connections for Admins (admin mode). Of course, over dial-up telnet may be faster than RDP.
