What brand are the NICs? Are they 10/100, or just 10? Are they set to autonegotiate the speed and duplex, or are they set to 10-half? Are you sure the SMC switches are 10/100 autosensing?

Is it possible to assign terminal service client in a GPO?*Update*YES

I'm not sure about the GPO, but you can pull the software off of X:\WINNT\system32\clients\tsclient\win32\disks\disk1. ie: start->run-> \\server\admin$\system32\clients\tsclient\win32\disks\disk1\

formatting with FAT32 over 32GB partition?

MS is insisting that you use NTFS for such a large drive (>32GB). "Insisting" is a dubious word in this situation too. It's more like forcing you to use NTFS. If you really really want to use FAT32, you gotta use fdisk from Win9X.

LOL. ICA is pretty sweet if you're on a LAN. Are you on a LAN, or over a WAN link? Is that the server specs or the workstation specs? Out of the box, ICA is fast over a LAN.

800Mbits of bandwidth using port trunking on an SMC switch?

The trunking they show is with a total of four ports. Since each port is 200Mbps (100 full duplex), 4x200=800Mbps. You can't get more than 100Mbps on one connection in one direction, but between the swtiches, yes there is 800 Mbps. Looks like, from their pdf, you could have just two ports...

Win2k Terminal Server problem

You delete reg keys on the client machines for them to get re-issued temp CALs. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSLicensing\ is what you are looking for. Delete any license under the \store key.

What does 192 mean in an IP address?

The only private address space starting with 192 is 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255. Any others are OK. As to why you are having issues, sounds like your routing tables got screwed up. Have you rebooted at all?

Internet Solution for College

Find a tier 1 ISP and get a T3? That would be pretty cool. Probably expensive though. In Wisconsin, the UW system pays $5500/Mbit, which is supposedly a fair rate for bandwidth. That would be around $250K/year for a T3. Our access is provided by Genuity.

Maximum number of cpus for NT 4 server?

NT 4.0 Server can support 4 CPUs, just like Win2000 Server. Not sure about NT4 EE though. NT4 and 2K are pretty similar in that regard.

Windows 2000 Pro + McAfee 4.5 = sloooooooooooow

Turn off the System Scan and leave on the Email, Internet, and Download scans. This will fix your slow downs, and keep you safe from downloading something nasty. I had the same problem, Eudora would take 4-5 seconds to open until I disabled the System scan. Then it was ~.5 seconds or so. Fast.

What is the Best cpu/mobo for Win2000 server running 24/7 in las vegas!

You must realize that there are other factors effecting the network transfers. One possibility is the speed of your hard drives. Slower drives and interfaces can barely write at 3-4MB/sec. Another can be the programs you're using. I've always used WS-FTP but it's not as fast as the CLI ftp...

If you have Win98/ME, there are backups made every first bootup of the day. Check out the programs scanregw.exe and scanreg.exe. Very handy tools.

where is the registry stored?

Under win9x, it's both user.dat and system.dat. User.dat supplies the info stored in HKEY_CURRENT_USER. System.dat is the rest. Same is true for NT, however user.dat is specific to the user logged in and is stored in their home folder. It also carries the name ntuser.dat.

Why use telnet if you're going to use terminal services? You get two free connections for Admins (admin mode). Of course, over dial-up telnet may be faster than RDP.
