Dvd Compatibility

It sorta depends on how old your player is. My 2002 Panasonic would not recognize the DVD+R media that my brand new Plextor 708A liked so well. And the Plextor is not one of the few writers that support "BitSetting" of the "Book Type" field, which would apparently have been one solution...

Ready for a DL DVD burner?

I've been quite happy using DVD Shrink with DVD Encrypter to recompress commercial dual layer DVD's down to single layer DVD+R media. The resulting picture doesn't seem noticably degraded on my standard old 27" TV. But someday I'll get a new TV with a bigger screen and alot more pixels. Will...

Advise On DVD Burners

Got the Plextor 708A about a month ago. Running it with a P4 @ 3.15GHz. Can read and burn DVD's while running all sorts of other apps (not alot of high-end games). It seems to write on just about anything I throw at it, although I use Ritek 8X DVD+R for serious backups. The one stumbling...

No problem. Am doing just that. I haven't quantified it and I haven't used Photoshop, but RAID-0 does seem to make a significant difference in how fast progs load - especially in booting or waking up from hybernation. It will also give you better performance if you're working with huge files...

Right. I've come to see the error of my ways. I've gotten deeper into the bits & pieces of SW needed for this operation than I ever expected I'd have to. Anyway, it looks like you have to copy to HD first in order to do the necessary compression. But hey, the disks come out quite nice...

I'm running that HS/F on a P4P800. Not deluxe, but same NB. Zalman lists the MoBos that are not compatible here, and none of the the P4P800 line is not on the list. The large HS does come right out to the edge of the board, so just make sure you have a tall enough case that the PS doesn't...

Boon72: Feel the CPU heatsink. If it's not warm then you've got a bad thermal contact between the CPU and the heatsink - fix it NOW. Could be on crooked or too much thermal goo (or no thermal goo). If it is warm, then you're probably getting bogus temp readings.

The best I've found (retail) is $110 (incl ship, after rebate, no CA tax) HERE. OEM $138 (free ship, rebate(?) not incl, plus CA tax) HERE (Jeez, I should just go for the retail!) If you know of a better deal a post is good for bragging rights!

OK, you guys may be willing to spend close to $200 to get that 12x Plextor. But hey, the 8x 708A aint bad, especially with the $30 rebate bringing it down to $112. Question: does anybody know if that rebate is good on the OEM version? The rebate form lists a whole bunch of valid UPC codes...

I've installed a P4P800 (not deluxe) in an Antec 3700AMB. Used all the mounting holes - they all had metal gound rings around them - none insulated from the case. Works fine. It's a little hard to imagine they'd build the board such that some mounting holes would need to be insulated.

Wrong. That gas guzzler, being a "truck", is exempt from the emission standards for passenger cars - one of the worst loopholes in the history of environmental law. (But then you probably think of that as an advantage.) Beyond that, if you're using 4X the gas per mile, then you're putting out...

PSU Feels rather hot - and crap temps no matter what i do

You'd better be careful with your 'm' vs 'M'. The former means milli (1/1000). The latter means mega (X 1000000). So "MATX" would be REALLY big, like a city block. And your "µATX" would be about the size of a grain of salt. The conventional mATX ("milli ATX") looks about like a sugar cube. :D
