Torn between two oldr BMW series 7's

A cousin of mine has two 7 series BMW's: a 1996 740i and a 1998 750i. Both had about 150k miles when he bought them, the 96 now has 225k and the 98 has about 175k. He hasn't had to fix many things on both of them so far (he's owned them for a few years), but when he has the maintanance costs...

    Transmission maintenance

you could also drop the pan and change the fluid and filter, then drive for a week or so then change fluid again. It might cost more, but chances are you'll get between 70-90% of the fluid changed, without the risk of damaging your transmission.

Help me choose all seasons (Canada)

I just got some Kumho 795 touring tires put on my car. The noise level is very nice compared to the old tires, and being you dont drive at your cars limits, touring tires like these will be just fine. And for handling in the ice and snow, i can't comment first hand on this (got the tires...

Thinking of trading my old dodge neon for a small pickup

I would also recommend the Ranger above the s10. I'm more of a GM person than Ford, but this is one category where Ford beats GM IMO. Get a v6 and you'll have plenty of power for pulling/hauling small loads. I realize that maybe this is different for me than you (i'm 17), but insurance...

    2003 Chevy S-10 w/ 4cyl

probably be similar to most Ranger 4-cylinders as far as speed goes, and there are plenty of those on the road so that isn't too much of a problem apparently. I'd spend a bit more money and get a Ranger with the 4.0 v6 with that many miles on it though. The 4.0 is very durable and the truck...

    Used motorcycles and mileage

My dad owns a 2004 Sportster Custom 1200. If you're looking for comfort, a sportster will be just fine for longer trips (may want to invest in a nice seat). My dad has a custom seat on his and my mom and him take day long rides without problems (they think it's as good as their old Goldwing)...

    Buffalo burger vs Hamburger

Need some maintainence advice for my Camry

If you have an extra minute there's a really easy way to check out your engine seals and see if you have any blow-by (if you're doing other matenence anyways, it's nice to see what kind of shape the engine is in): 1. Pop the hood and unscrew your oil cap. 2. Turn your engine on. 3. Put a...

Odd "boost" in engine at a specific RPM

I notice this in my Oldsmobile. I have the 3.8 and the 4-speed auto and there are parts on the powerband where it's like "whoa, where did that come from!?!??!". My transmission is geared for economy/smooth & quiet cruising, and there are points where the power is pretty low and then all of a...

Drove an 07 Civic SI yesterday!

The SS might not quite be up to the Honda build quality or have as nice interior materials, but is a very nice car that might be worth a look. And don't mistake "poorer build quality" with unreliable. If it's taken care of, expect 150k miles out of the car easy without worrying about...

Thoughts on the Ford Fusion / Mercury Milan?

Take a look at the Saturn Aura. The Aura has been getting great reviews and would be worth a look. Build quality issues aren't as big anymore for GM products, things are changing for the better in that company.

Last time i used a body-fat % thingy (not sure what they're called) it was about 19.5% about 2 years ago. I don't think it's the same, but I don't think that it's 25%. I guess it might be around 22% or something....I just know I'm not obese.

    My fish died

If you want to know if there's something wrong with your water, take a sample in a jar down to a local pet store (Petco is fine) to have it tested. Usually they do it for free, and that way you can see if anything has changed in your water. Odds are the fish just got old, it's hard to tell how...

    Pontiac Solstice Coupe in 2008

Pontiac is considering making a smaller RWD sedan on a platform based on the Holden Torana, which uses a few Kappa parts (Solstice, Sky). It will probably be close to the size of a BMW 3-series (Cadillac is getting something on the same platform), but I don't know if they're planning on making...

    First car?

If i had the money, i'd buy a 10-15k used Subaru Impreza (non-WRX because of fuel consumption and insurance, though a WRX would be awsome :) ) or Legacy with out too many miles on it. The Subaru's are reliable and very safe, and they have plenty of punch when you want it but not enough to get...

Looking for a good car for school

Looking at cars.com, i found a 2000 Civic EX with 60,000 miles for $7000. I don't know if this is a good deal or not. It's pretty low on options, but it does have a 5 speed manual, so that would be kind of fun. I'm not a big Honda fan, but if i could find a good deal on a Civic I wouldn't...

I test drove a 2003 Grand Prix GT with 65,000 miles for $8900 and a 2005 Taurus with 70,000 miles for $7500 today. I liked the Grand Prix a lot more. It was more comfortable, had better steering/brakes/suspension, had a nicer engine, had less road noise, and looked better. However, it was...

Looking for a good car for school

Ugh, alright, i said that wrong. Honda parts are not as plentiful and cheap as parts from American car companies like GM and Ford (Dodge is a totally different story). A part (lets say a water pump) for a Impala is going to cost less than one for an Accord or Camry because there is not as...

Looking for a good car for school

i'm just saying that import cars are usually more expensive to fix because the parts are harder to find. I'm not saying a Civic is expensive to fix, just more expensive to fix than other options (like most Ford/GM cars)

    Torque vs Horsepower

Not exactly. Wear on your engine (particularly the piston rings) is close to the square of engine speed. The faster your engine spins on average, the faster your rings (and other engine internals) will wear out, and the faster your engine will require a rebuild. If the driver wants his engine...

Got some new shoes for my car...

I'm not a Honda fan, but that looks really nice. As others have mentioned, it's nice to see that you didn't but a wing/racing stripes/insanely loud weed-whacker muffler on it. Good choice for a Civic mod!

What kind of car should I buy?

I know they look like grandma cars, but a used Buick or Oldsmobile would be pretty good for what you want. They can be had for that price range with fairly low miles (50-70k), rarely have serious mechanical problems (depends on how it was cared for by the previous owner), and average about 25...

    2008 C6 Dyno numbers

I don't think that the LS2 will be worth too much more in the future, as the C6 will get replaced in 2009 or 2010 by the C7. I think that's probably the shortest lived Corvette though (2005-2010?), so the C6 in general might be worth more.

    Anyone own a scooter?

In my area I've seen 800-1200cc used Suzuki's from the mid 80's for around $1000-1500. The bikes don't look like racers, and probably only get 40 mpg (50 tops), but they're more than fast enough and are high quality bikes. Look at used ones in your area, I'm sure you'll find something.

How much did you pay for your automobile?

1990 Oldsmobile 88 $1250 Great car for reliability and gas mileage. Strong engine too. However, not enough power or stiff enough suspension to make it much fun to drive.

Midwest, 4WD vs FWD in a small SUV (CR-V) worth it?

Yeah, 4WD is nice, but that's one more thing to go wrong on your car (and not a cheap thing to fix) and it adds a lot of weight (you already mentioned the decreased fuel economy). FWD should be all you need, but 4WD comes in handy a few days of the year when FWD just isn't quite enough. In...
