Question AMD Phoenix/Zen 4 APU Speculation and Discussion

I think I need to clarify, since the wording in the table is a bit ambiguous: "Not run" means I haven't attempted to run it. "Did not start" means what it says, of course. Crysis seems to have problems launching on recent systems. I think I just got a black screen shortly and then back to Steam...

Question AMD Phoenix/Zen 4 APU Speculation and Discussion

Here are some benchmarks I've run myself on my new Asus Zephyrus G14 with Ryzen 9 7940HS, 32GB DDR5-4800 and RTX 4070. Several of these are older benchmarks that I've used for benchmarking my laptops over many years. The Thinkpad T14s G3 was returned after a few days due to hardware instability...

And now first rumors of the Jasper Lake based Atlas Canyon NUC arrive: FanlessTech: EXCLUSIVE: Jasper Lake NUC It's said to arrive in Q1 2022. I'm guessing 10nm delays plus Covid-19 has caused this product to slip in a pretty major way. Probably more of a 2020 product from the beginning...

Review Raspberry PI (ARM A72) vs EPYC for DC study. Interesting results.

@Markfw I saw you discussed suitable OS for testing on the Pi 4 earlier. I suggest you use the official Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit beta, which to the best of my knowledge is very stable at this point...

    The Intel Atom Thread

At least for single thread, I'm guessing it's ~15% improved IPC. Goldmont to Goldmont Plus was 25-30% on average. Also, the J64XX has 15-20% higher frequency than the J4205. 1.7/(1.3*1.15)=1.14. Not awfully exciting either way... The graphics will of course be a pretty major improvement, though.
  10. B

    The Intel Atom Thread

I've run quite a lot of tests on both Goldmont and Goldmont Plus. From my own testing, it appears Goldmont Plus is between Penryn and Nehalem in IPC. A 30% IPC uplift on top of that will result in IPC closer to Haswell.

Question CPU for Surface Laptop 3.

I was interested in getting the Ryzen version, but the battery figures sort of put me off. I'm actually more and more leaning towards waiting for Tiger Lake and Renoir. It seems likely that there will be a quite disproportionate performance increase from both the Intel and AMD camps within 12...

Yep, IPC seems to be better than Core 2 and quite close to Nehalem.

    Your Geekbench 4 results

Yes, a lot of the workloads that are tested are of the type that scale. So, even if Geekbench just runs them for a short time, they may run a good deal longer when used in practice (e.g. compression, compilation, etc.). There's also the fact that Geekbench 4 gives a composite score that probably...

    Your Geekbench 4 results

Depends on what you're trying to measure. Even a comparatively short load will be sufficient to establish a meaningful result, as long as the CPU has spun up to its expected working frequency. You obviously need to be aware of the fact that the CPU will run mainly at max turbo frequencies in a...
  15. B

    Your Geekbench 4 results

The most likely reason for that is not that the test is flawed, but rather that the load is bursty enough that it's not detected as 100% due to the sampling period used when measuring the CPU load. The main problem with short tests like these is that they usually don't uncover thermal...

Question [AT]Cannon Lake deep dive review

Good, meaty article. Unusually large number of small grammatical errors or odd wordings, though. Regarding CNL, it provides a disappointingly small IPC improvement. I was hoping for something more like IVB, but that certainly doesn’t appear to be the case. For comparison, a 10W 4-core Pentium...

Question NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 REVIEWS, – Faster Than GTX 1070 Ti For $349 US

It almost seems as if some people have forgotten that new generations of cards used to perform significantly better than old ones at the same price point. The very slow improvements in the 200-250 USD bracket over the past few years can't be good for PC gaming as a whole. More than 5 years ago...

Where did you see that? I was under the impression that Sunny Cove is what was always supposed to go into Ice Lake, which would make it two generations newer than Skylake, not three.

SNES Classic coming out September 29th for $79.99

Yeah, I figured that was it. An iBuffalo controller will have less lag than the 8bitdo, but it's only around half a frame (8ms) better. The main issue with the Pi is its default video driver and the additional buffering that's needed mainly because of the slow hardware. Here's a test I made that...

SNES Classic coming out September 29th for $79.99

I have the SNES Classic, as well as a Pi and RetroArch on PC, and I'm interested in hearing what kind of differences you notice between the Classic and the Pi in SMW? I know the Pi has higher input lag than the Classic, but do you notice other differences?

So... Is there anything interesting coming up for the 15W bracket in 2019? Or is it all up in the air still? 8700K vs 2700X on with 2080Ti [computerbase]

    8700K vs 2700X on with 2080Ti [computerbase]

If processor X runs the game logic of a certain game 30% faster than processor Y at 1080p, processor X will run the game logic around 30% faster at 4K as well (or has that changed? Honest question...). You can even out the differences by adding a GPU bottleneck, but it just means processor X...

    8700K vs 2700X on with 2080Ti [computerbase]

    8700K vs 2700X on with 2080Ti [computerbase]

Like I said: Then you're not interested in a CPU test, you're interested in a system test. That's fine, but pretty meaningless if you want to know the performance difference between the CPUs themselves. Just looking at such data could end up with you buying a CPU that's a good deal slower than...

    8700K vs 2700X on with 2080Ti [computerbase]

If you were in the market for a CPU and wanted the fastest, would you prefer a benchmark where the reviewer had gone out of their way to create a GPU bottleneck or would you prefer one where they tried to lower the GPU's effect to instead isolate CPU performance? Which test would be more useful...

While it might be pointless to compare to ARM, it's still fun from a "what-if" perspective. It does appear Goldmont Plus is very competitive with current high-end ARM-designs (excluding the big cores such as Apple's A11), from a pure performance perspective. It's of course almost impossible to...
