Recommend me a data-crunching computer build?

I need to build a computer that will primarily be used for data analysis (so I assume multi-core, possibly multi-CPU?). Specifically, it will be using the program Gaussian (a chemistry analysis program), which does huge calculations for very long times... I've never built a computer like this...

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions. I should have clarified - the budget for the CPU alone is $300-1000. He's got plenty of cash for the rest of the system, but didn't want to go over $300-1000 just for the CPU. Is there a better Xeon processor (or pair) to get, in that case?

Help - explorer.exe eating memory and CPU

Thanks guys. When I tried to end the process, it just wouldn't respond. I downloaded Malwarebytes, and it found 2 different trojans. It seems to have resolved the problem. I'm going to go change all my passwords. Thank you!

Thanks Ken, that's helpful. It would probably be Adobe CS6 or whatever is newest. I think a distinct video card would probably be good if you or anyone has any suggestions. It doesn't have to be 3 displays necessarily if that adds a significant amount.

Windows Media Center 7 keeps hanging/freezing

So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling WMC 7, and that made it work for like a minute or two longer, and then it went back to the same pattern of hanging. I found that if I just left it hanging it eventually would resolve (after around 5 min?), but then it only detects one of the 4 tuners...

Well, it seems like a new NIC fixed the problem. Went out and bought a cheap Dynex gigabit NIC and problem solved, getting great download rates, and network working fine now. Thanks for the suggestion!

So it looks like it has the same problem across the network. I'm transferring a 24 GB file from my server to the HTPC and it still caught for a couple minutes at one point and didn't show any changes, then it started back up a few minutes later. I have no idea... I have also tried...

There are some "errors" in the log, but they all pertain to windows update. Nothing that specifically pertains to networking, as far as I can tell... I'm really not sure what to make of this. I tried updating the Realtek drivers for the network controller to the newest off their website...

No, it's store-bought, the same one I was using prior to this reinstall (and it never had problems). I just unplugged it and replugged it in a couple times while doing the build, but nothing else.

It's still frozen at 21% of my firefox download right now, for example. And when Adobe flash tried to install, it's installer hung at 30% for about 30 sec, then stopped and says "Cannot contact reliable source." What gives?
