I think i found the issue with the computer shutting down. There was a lot of dust built up on the cpu fan heatsink and the CPU was overheating. Once I get the dust blown out I will see if it is stable.
That is the problem i am experiencing. As long as the the compyter is active it works just fine. I ran a benchmarking program called Performance test and it showed no issues. I will try your suggestions.

i only notice the LAN is not active when the computer is shut down but still connected to the router by LAN cable. I think, possibly, the +5vSB rail is not working or not coming on. This is not a huge problem for me but rather one that I noticed and have wondered why.
ok so i checked in the bios wake on lan is enabled but the network connection is not active with computer off. I am wondering now if the power supply is faulty somehow?
I have a router that does not detect one of my computers when the lan cable is plugged in. my 2 other computers are detected even when these are powered off. The problem computer is detected by the router when it is powered up. Would 6this indicate an isssue with the power supply or mother board?

i bought a Dell Inspiron 15 inch similar to this unit and it works very well for the tasks you describe. What helped the performance of mine was changing the hard drive to an SSD. This really imnproved the boot up time and overall speed of the machine. And for not too much money to add the SSD.
