  1. What is a good free backup software that doesn't package files

How do these sync programs determine if a file is different from another? filename, date and size? checksum? check all bits?
  2. Software which can generate checksum for large, deep directory

I have quite a bit of data that I backup on two external drives which I keep at two separate locations. I call it my ghetto RAID, and I'm sure plenty of people would never use such a system, but I do. I don't like relying on backup/synchronization software, so I manually maintain each archive...
  3. Win7: Browser launching at startup, virus with a sense of humor?

You know, I considered doing this myself but never did, for whatever reason. So I just did it, and sure enough it doesn't happen with the new user. So, I got out Wingrep and searched the old user folder (which was small enough that it didn't crash Wingrep like an entire C: search did), and I...
  4. Win7: Browser launching at startup, virus with a sense of humor?

Agreed... but it's not IN any of those startup places. :-/
  5. Win7: Browser launching at startup, virus with a sense of humor?

oops dupe post :-( please delete
  6. Win7: Browser launching at startup, virus with a sense of humor?

Well... here is something interesting! With FF gone, IE was my default again. Sure enough, it did launch... but it only tried to connect to http://homegroup/ Which means FF was adding in the www and com... which makes me even more suspicious this is not a virus but something I did in my...
  7. Win7: Browser launching at startup, virus with a sense of humor?

Haha, I literally am in the process of doing that right now... great minds think alike, hopefully! Will report back.
  8. Win7: Browser launching at startup, virus with a sense of humor?

Yeah, I also tried to wingrep my entire HDD for homegroup.com, but it just kept crashing wingrep, I guess it can't deal with such a large search set. :-/
  9. Win7: Browser launching at startup, virus with a sense of humor?

I am at my wit's end here. Earlier today I was unable to accomplish something which has never been a problem for me in the past. Simple file transfers over a local network between two Windows 7 PC's. I still haven't got to the bottom of it, but a newer problem has sprung up which would be pretty...
  10. Win7 filesharing on home networking driving me mad...

I had every single one of these share connections working before (all on Win7) without homegroups. I prefer to stay away from homegroups, since I still have some non Windows machines needing access to the shares sometimes... and in general if it ain't broke why fix it? I never needed...
  11. Win7 filesharing on home networking driving me mad...

I must be missing sometime incredible obvious here... 3 PC's in house: 1) Win7 Ultimate 2) Win7 HP 3) Win7 HP All are on the same network (1 is hardwired, 2 and 3 are laptops on wi-fi). I have some folders shared on #1. - each PC has only one account, with admin powers, and no password - I...
  12. Why don't driver versions match what the control panel says?

Example: I know for a fact that I have ATI Drivers "11.6" installed. However, in my control panel it says the driver is "8.861.0.0" for my ATI card. This is confusing at best. At worst, it is problematic. If I did not know that this driver was 11.6, but knew that I liked something...
  13. Data archiving philosophy questions (LONG)

Good info from all... thanks so much for all the feedback. I think the one major step missing from my manual workflow process was error checking. I ended up getting a manual MD5 hashing tool: http://corz.org/windows/software/checksum/ Seems pretty popular from the search engine...
  14. Data archiving philosophy questions (LONG)

Looking for critique on my thought process here, and a few unanswered questions regarding data corruption. As a photographer and videographer I generate a sizeable amount of data very quickly, data that I want to last a lifetime. For years I archived it on optical discs in triplicate (2...
  15. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

Unfortunately, in roughly 4 months I have already been through 2 of the CM fans. After 2 months or so they seem to start making a lot of noise (scraping/chirping sound), so I have to replace them. Just put my 3rd one in. If this one starts making noise too, I am done with these for good.
  16. [Retired] The LCD Thread

Wow, I can't believe the 2209WA is discontinued already. I ordered my first one at the end of May (slickdeal!) and received it in early June. I knew I should have just ordered two then but I wanted to be sure I liked it. Of course I did, so in June I ordered another one (another slickdeal!)...
  17. Dell U2410

I knew this would happen, right after I bought my second 2209WA. But then again, I got my 2209's for ~$200 each. IF the 2410's are $400+, I probably would pass anyway. Dual 22" is already about as wide as my peripheral vision can take. EDIT: For those who haven't seen it in the sticky...
  18. Odd BSOD

Good to know. I'm sure my voltages still need a bit more playing with. I am new to OC'ing and didn't know that it could still be marginally unstable even after passing the stress tests. My DIMM V is only 1.55 which is a bit low for the speed I'm at so I'm sure I could raise that. Thanks.
  19. Odd BSOD

    My specs: EVGA x58 (E758), BIOS SZ2E i7 920 D0 @ 3.8GHz Prolimatech Megahalems 3x2GB OCZ DDR3 1600 7-7-7-24 MSI 4890 Corsair 850W OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD Vista x64 I do not think this BSOD is O/C related because I have passed over 20 LinX runs and 12 hrs Prime95 no problem. For weeks...
  20. Internal USB extension cable

Yes, that is what I thought too. I'm positive the pins matched up, this question has been asked and answered before. The item had numerous similar reviews on the frozencpu site (as also stated in OP). It's not my imagination, trust me. ;-) Even the mfr has admitted it may have a problem...
  21. Internal USB extension cable

Well, I'm OP and my working solution is that my new x58 mobo has closer headers. ;-) The 4-pin cables sound like a "working solution" too if I were to need an extension again. But I agree I'd like a cable with all 9 pins and ground. Since the 9-pin connection is standard on all motherboards...
  22. Internal USB extension cable

So your 9th pin (ground I think?) is just unattached?
  23. Internal USB extension cable

Thanks, but how is that going to help me with my front panel multi card reader? It needs an internal USB header.
  24. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

The box says 2000RPM, 69.69CFM (which is a ridiculous amount of precision btw).
  25. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

Update: I just noticed today that on the back of the box for my CM fan it says 70CFM, while on the CM website (and the SVC store) it says 90CFM. Hmm... that could explain why the YL High feels like it moves more air. Will email CM...
  26. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

Well, I am gonna do some more conclusive unscientific testing later, but based on a quick 5 minute test, the CM is quieter than both the Medium and High Yate Loons. It seems to move slightly less air than the YL High (but still much more than the medium), but since it is quieter than even the...
  27. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

Makes perfect sense and I can't believe I didn't think of that. In the end though, noise is an aesthetic concern as much as "pretty blue glow." So if you can get the same cooling performance from a noisy glowing fan, vs a quiet flat black fan... in the end the choice is yours... audible...
  28. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

What was the hard way? Why can't you have dependable and pretty?
  29. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

    Thanks zagood!
  30. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

Well my Yate Loon and CM fans came in last night, but I didn't really have much time to try them out. And the way I was envisioning testing them didn't work, which I guess should have been obvious. I had thought I could just hook them up to a spare PSU, plug it into the wall, and flip it on...
  31. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

Does that case (which has been around for a while) have the same fans we're referring to (which I thought just came out)? I think my fans may be waiting for me at home but it will be a little while before I'm able to try them out and post my opinions... busy schedule.
  32. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

There's a lot of truth to what you're saying. But I don't think that the different fan constructions out there have very radical differences in their flow profile (certainly not as radical as the garden hose example, which I know you weren't implying). As far as the specs above, I'll take them...
  33. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

Please see my reply above. Where you say and/or, I see only and. Unless the current crop of 120mm fans have widely varying cross-sectional flow properties, cfm and static pressure should always be closely correlated. You won't get one without the other. Please show or explain otherwise, if...
  34. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

Once it leaves the fan, moving air is just moving air. It has mass and velocity. The only thing that will make one airflow pass an obstacle more efficiently than another airflow is velocity, which is of course directly proportional to airflow (commonly measured in our fan specs as cfm)...
  35. Internal USB extension cable

Well, first off since you already ordered them try them out and see what happens. FrozenCPU told me they thought it was a power problem for me, the device that I was extending (front panel cardreader) needed more power than the extension could carry. They said in the future they are going to...
  36. Using OS/software to "tag" multiple media/file types

The first time I was introduced to Gmail's "label" system years ago I was blown away by the concept. Rather than have to put each email in only one folder, I could now have every email in as many "folders" at once as I wanted... basically "tags" is another way of saying it. Immediately I...
  37. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

No offense guys, but some of the things you are saying go against very basic fluid dynamics (I have a BS in Aerospace Engineering). I do appreciate all the discussion though since I started this thread, I'm learning about a lot of different fan options here. I ordered one of the "90cfm 19db"...
  38. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

I must be an idiot, but I cannot find my way around their site at all. Where is this test you're referring to?
  39. How are these i7 temps?

Well, I haven't taken the time to re-seat my HSF and paste (not sure I will), but last night I did my first O/C, all the way up to 3.8GHz at STOCK VOLTAGE! Ran Prime95 for 1 hour (will do longer later) and max core temp was 74C (room 26C... and my case fans were turned all the way down still)...
  40. High quality 120mm fans with Blue LED?

Oh yeh, I forgot, I had already read that spec more closely myself and noticed the variable thing (the 110cfm). Ok, you convinced my, I'll check them out! :-)
