That's impressive that ATI manages to keep power consumption so low. I wonder why it didn't jibe with my personal experience though. With the X850XTPE installed, my +12V line dropped down to 11.84V (as measured by MBM) while the 6800U caused it to go to 11.90V. And the X850XTPE was definitely...
Let's do the math here:
ATI's X800 series is roughly equivalent to the 6800 series, right? The X800 runs between 475MHz for the Pro to 520MHz for the PE while the 6800 runs from at 350MHz to 400MHz (ignoring the 6800NU, which isn't even a competitor).
Now let's look at the X850XTPE, which...
I didn't actually touch the HS when I had the card, but the air coming out the back was _very_ warm. Also, the card noticeably increased the ambient temperature of the room after a while, much more so than my 6800U.
I had a Xtasy x850xtpe that ran at these temps too, so I quickly returned it. This is why I prefer Nvidia over ATI -- they are much more efficient, requiring less power and generating less heat.
The biggest problem with those big LCD's is you can't play any games at the native resolution with any kind of decent framerates, unless you have a dual 6800 Ultra SLI setup.

For reference, I get 112 fps on the Source Stress Test (at 1600x1200, everything on high, reflect all, no AA, bilinear filtering) and 65 fps on the doom3 timedemo (1600x1200, everything on high, no AA or AF).
My system is:
AMD Athlon64 3200+ on an ASUS K8V SE Deluxe Mobo
1 GB of Kingston Value Ram
BFG6800OC with all pipes enabled and overclocked to 400/800
A couple of 200 GB 7200 RPM drives
SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS
It definitely helps to set AA and AF to minimal settings. Personally, I...
For most games, I play at 1680x1050, no AA or AF on my BFG6800 (overclocked and all pipes enabled) and the frame rates are silky smooth on doom3, farcry, cs source, and most of half life 2. With NFSU2, I can play with everything maxed out and the game is still smooth. I don't think you need an...
I have not sent mine back. Mine has 1 stuck red pixel that's just barely noticeable on a black background if you look for it. I also have very minor backlight bleeding in the upper left corner that only appears after a few hours of usage. It's so minor that I barely notice it, and I run a...
He posted a couple of screen shots of HL2 in a different thread:

It looks like vertical FOV changes as well, but the side effect is that the point of view looks to be a few feet back from...
Like I've said before, if you don't play any WS games now and can afford to replace your display in a couple of years, then the 2001FP would be a better choice for you. However, let's not scare people away from buying the 2005FPW with the idea that making a game work with it will be time...
That's a good point. If you spend a lot of time playing older games that have no support for widescreen displays, then the 2001FP is a probably a better choice. However, I don't think you should equate a game controller to a video display. The game controller is relatively less expensive and...
The Delf game is here: http://dell.eprize.net/dell/dellf/. It gives out a random coupon each time you play. If you recommend 4 friends (give fake names/email addresses), you'll get 4 more chances to play each time. The coupons that it gives out expires on 1/5, I believe. There is a separate...
A couple of weeks ago, Best Buy had an offer where you could buy a BFGTech6800OC with HL2 and FarCry for $220 after rebate. I don't know if the offer is still good, but you might want to look into that. I think you'll get better performance with a normal 6800 over the 6600GT.
It should take you no more than 15 minutes to get that coupon. You can play the Delf game over and over again by entering a bogus email address. Just copy down the code when you get it, cuz you won't get it in email, obviously.
I guess it's personal preference, but to me, that second shot looks like I shouldn't be bumping into things yet. It looks like I should be able to take a couple of more steps forward. I would be pretty frustrated playing the game like that, espescially when you have to jump onto crates and walk...
