How's the Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3?

I have this board and am quite happy with it so far. I'm currently running an i5 2500k @ 4.5GHz on it without any issues. I picked it up with the Microcenter $50 off cpu/mobo deal.

What is the best book / resource to start android programming ?

You'll definitely want to get familiar with Java first, but once you've done that I've found Mark Murphy's CommonsWare series to be particularly helpful: http://commonsware.com/. They're also updated fairly regularly to cover changes in new Android releases. He has three titles available...

Recommended SATA controller?

I used a Rosewill Silicon Image card PCI 4x internal, 2x external SATA 150 in an older system I put together as a Linux file server. It's been running fine for a few months now and is only $25 at Newegg It is only SATA 150, but since it's on standard PCI that will be the first bottleneck anyway.

If a computer doesn't POST, what hardware could be at fault?

WTF Windows?!

I've seen similar behavior with faulty memory. I'd try running Memtest86+ to verify that this isn't a hardware (at least memory) problem.

4x Modules... 1T even possible?

As far as I know, you generally need to drop to 2T when running 4 modules. There may be certain CPU/Motherboard/RAM combinations where you're able to run 1T with 4, but I don't think it is often the case. On my system I had to drop to 2T when I went up to 4 modules (K8N Neo2, 3500+ Winchester...

Does anyone actually use x64?

Do you Partition or do you not Partition poll...

I always just go straight for fdisk whenever possible. If I do need to resize partitions, it's either GNU Parted or Partition Magic, depending on filesystem.

Doing a bit more research, I see that the latest DFI boards have "CMOS Reloaded" where you can save and reload certain CMOS configurations. It seems like this addresses at least one of my issues (assuming these saves are persistent after a CMOS reset). Reset CMOS, reload saved 'good'...

I tried the old drive with a different cable first. Still had the same problem. Looks like that drive is dead for good. I will try to test it on another system first before I RMA it though just to be sure the data is not recoverable. Also, I can't really run any diagnostics on the drive...

About to burn and install Fedora Core 3 w/A64 support

is it possible that AMD has "locked" their new chips?

Are you using a divider to eliminate your RAM as a problem (and low HT multiplier)? If so, you may have just gotten unlucky. Some CPU's just don't go as high as other unfortunately :(

memory question

Performance wise it really won't make any difference. That said, 2*1gig leaves the extra slots open to add additional memory in the future, whereas with 4*512 you will probably be full. If it's worth the extra cost for the larger modules is up to you.

I have been able to run my 3500+ at 2.5 ghz with 8.3% over vcore in the bios. Higher than that and I haven't been able to pass prime95. Probably with some more voltage I could get to 2.6 stable, but since I'm only using the stock HSF I don't want to push it too far.

There's no way to know exactly what caused the error. It's just that if you get an error, something caused a calculation to go wrong. Could be CPU, memory, bus speeds, etc. Basically just change one thing at a time until you pass the test. If you aren't running your memory way out of spec...

Best LCD monitor for hardcore gaming?

I don't claim to be a hardcore gamer by any means, but in the gaming I have done (Doom3, CS) I've been very happy with my Dell 2001FP. I don't notice any ghosting and everything looks nice and sharp (especially if your video card can handle playing at native 1600x1200).

Good choice. I think it's far better to spend the money on a better monitor than on the maybe 5% performance increase better RAM timings will get you. I did the same thing in my recent build -- 1 GB Corsair Value Select and a 2001FP :)

Is this normal?

Yep, those temps are about what I have on my 3500+. I actually set the motherboard CPU temp to 50c now to quiet down some fan noise, so it runs a little hotter now. I'm using stock cooling. Edit: I see that's idle at 42. That might actually be a bit high (temps I listed are under load)...

I'd agree, the 3200+ is the way to go for overclocking. 10x multiplier seems to be the sweet spot. I actually have a 3500+ that I run at 10x260. I may as well have gone for the 3200+ and saved some money :)

Stock AMD heatsink and fan?

I'm using the stock heatsink and fan on my 3500+ (including the pad). Right now im at 2.6 ghz at 1.54 volts. Coming in around 52C under load. Seems like the stock AMD heatsink/fan combo is pretty decent.

Is PCIE nVidia 6600 GT better then AGP 6600 GT?

6600gt AGP will perform the same as a 6600gt PCIE. The interface really doesn't make a difference in currently available video cards. However, if you're building a new system anyway you will probably want to consider PCIE for future upgradability.
