Samsung 950/960 NVME question

I use both my 950 pros as OS disks. Desktop 512 and a 256 in a laptop. 2. Never get close to throttling under gaming not enough sustained data transfer. only ever have them throttle under synthetic testing.

Samsung announce SM961 PM961

This is not an apples for apples comparison, the 950 is the 256G model vs the 961 being 512G a fairer comparison would be the 950 pro 512G as its read would be up in 2650MB range. Still the 961 looks impressive.

Unless you run synthetics all day you will be fine. I have both the 512 and 256 in a laptop with no extra cooling and both are fine. never get above 55C

Version 4.9.0 reports the links as 10gbps Version 4.9.7 reports the links as 8bps Somewhere between they decided to change the reported link from theoretical to actual throughput.

Either is a good choice, I own both the Pro 950 512GB (in a x99 system) and a 256GB in a Skylake laptop. Both absolutly fly.

When you say some VM's i would lean towards the intel 750, better at that server kind of workload. the 950 would be fine, X400 is SATA so you wouldn't get the advantage of a PCIe SSD. I have a 950 pro in my 5820k and love it.

Yes you can have 3 x M.2 drives today with full bandwidth to each. Why would you not put your SSD's on the fastest bus available rather than bottle necking a slower interface further disconnected from the CPU? makes no sense to me from a performance perspective.

As long as all your componts will support UEFI booting, mainly the graphics card needs to support Graphics Output Protocol (GOP) if you card is less the 2 years old you should be ok to disable CMS. Or check if their is an updated BIOS for your video card with GOP support. If it doesn't boot...

Win7 to the 950 is easy, even changed mine from a MBR to GPT/UEFI system. Why RAID though, the 950 is fast enough as it is. FYI your instructions state "Windows installation must be on a GPT harddrive." this is not true, I had my original MBR install booting from the 950 pro just fine.
