Which to upgrade first? Video or CPU.

In your case... I would consider a 64bit Athlon and a new motherboard... perhaps something like a K8T890 chipset or something... then you'll be forced to upgrade your video card too..hehe. Or get a SCSI hard drive..that'll dramatically increase performance visually. But the answer you're...

What is the Easiest way to swap hard drives

Ghost is good, I use acronis true image v8 which does an image or copy in less time than Ghost. Works great. Ghost and Acronis are best choice and cheap. Jeff at yourtechonline.com

    A8V problems

If you dont like the Asus board, try the ABit board... I hear it's quite good also. I have the A8V without any glitches..so far :-) Jeff

    Ultra X-Connect 500w

I thought I heard someone say he wouldn't touch the ultra with his dick? or was it a stick? hehe. Personally, I use the Antec Neopower 480W. Forget the Ultra... I hear lots of bad stuff about them. Altho, as pretty as it is, I haven't used it myself. Jeff

    need help on new PSU

An all round good power supply would be the Neopower 480Watt with Active PFC. Modular design too so just connect the cables you need. I like the active PFC, saves on your power bill, creates a more efficient power supply too. Jeff

    s939 3400+ vs. s754 3400+

939 has better memory management (Dual-DDR is typical) I have the A8V Asus board..and it screams. I couldn't wait for the nforce4 boards to mature so, maybe I'll wait a bit longer :-) Jeff

    nano-ITX motherboard

Check around there... all sorts of people are making their own goofy cases for these things. They are small for embedded devices... pretty cool huh? I wish i had one. Either way... they are quiet too, no fans required... chip prolly takes about 5 watts... give or take... and that's the idea...

    What noise?

I haven't used it. Lots of the noise I hear from my PC is the exhaust fan in the back PSU. Once I switch to the new Neopower 480W with the 12cm fan, I would expect it to be more quiet too. I hope the foam doesn't increase case temperture. Jeff

    Space Elevators

A hanging cable won't work... the drag of it would send the satellite tumbling to earth. I think people were theorizing an elevator physically connected to earth to bring items up to orbit. Can't imagine myself... would be an incredibly strong tower... not in your lifetime ;-)

    Don't let my coworker buy a MiniMac - Recommend a sub-$1000 PC!

Only problem with the Mac is that there is 100x fewer people who know how to fix them... not to mention software is more expensive. I admit, it is cute ;) I'd be tempted to have one myself... kinda like the machine you'd have in yer bedroom for researching on porno or something..lol. Jeff

    HDD sizes

Usually you end up with the capacity after you format. Fat32, NTFS... different formatting will yield different amounts of space available after formatting.

Will RAM ever replace the hard drive?

http://www.infoworld.com/article/05/02/03/HNoptwareholographics_1.html The Holographic Versatile Disc is coming (HVD) 3.9TB per 12CM disk. Hey... Holographic storage has faster access and read speeds by far.

Will RAM ever replace the hard drive?

no reason why WinXP can't be put on ROM too (Embedded XP). It'll be a while before active components replace optical or magnetic storage economically... since..more transistors, more heat and power kind of thingie. Hard drives are economical in this decade. You can get 10G 20G ram drives...

    programming for dual core

I would assume that XP Pro will make use of Dual-core. (1 to 2 processors) If you have an application that uses threads, those threads may be executed on a second core for increased speed. Jeff

is maxtor really as bad as ppl say?

I have sold plenty of WD, Maxtor and so on. There was a period a few years ago where I had a few customers quickly go thru a number of maxtor 40G drives. So, I had bad experience with older Maxtor, and Older IBM. Newer drives... anyone having trouble with New drives? I bet even the new...

    Thermaltake Tsunami or Soprano

Thanks guys! I actually broke down and ordered my case today... I picked out the "Thermaltake Shark" case in Black. Slightly thicker aluminum (1mm) and 120mm fans. Looks kinda sexy too... I hope it's a killer... I hate buying cases, then getting them.. and finding out it's garbage..lol. Jeff
  19. J

    Thermaltake Tsunami or Soprano

ahhhh yes. I see the front door is plastic as well... dang. They sure make plastic look nice..lol. Tsunami then I guess... or..the Shark?? Jeff

Looking to get a new case..

Aluminum is more rigid too... lighter, looks cool. Aluminum wheels on a bike are stronger than steel... same with PC chassis... take take more punishment. Conducts heat better. Women will fall in love with you is you have an aluminum case... not the steel ones ;-) The list goes on..lol Jeff

    Thermaltake Tsunami or Soprano

Looking at the specs... the Soprano is heavier... is it a heavier duty contruction? The cases seems less expensive than the Tsunami... any recommendations?:) Jeff

    All metal

I was checking out the Lian-Li cases again. Looks like the V1000 model has the 12CM fans (120mm) in it... I am sure those would be quiet. Sexy looking grilled case too I think. Can't go wrong with Lian-Li.... I hope they are not too expensive. Jeff

    All metal

Hi Guys/gals... I have a Lian-Li PC65 model which is older but built like a tank... quite nice. I have a newer Super lanboy case that seems nice but flimsy... I am looking for a built-like a tank mid-tower case which out going broke... and is all metal... none of these plastic fronts. Is...

Great place for Canadians to shop

sometimes these retail stores have slightly better prices too. I hate buying retail as well..lol...but the suppiers are either slow, or out or whatever... and if it isn't a brand they normally carry... it's not cheap Jeff

Great place for Canadians to shop

I just got it actually...hehe. haven't plugged it in yet. I just received my A8V motherboard, my 3200+ will be here tomorrow... then um gonna plug it all together and let you know ;-) If it is noisy... can prolly get something from Zalman to quiet it down. Jeffy

    CLEAR CASES PROS AND CONS

Yeah... pass on the acrylic... i'll look like crap after a ahwile. Plus it doesn't shield your PC from EM of any type... hard to work with too. I'd go for one of those new Lian-Li cases tho with the grill looking front. Jeff

    Help picking out parts

I would go for the Dell 2005FPW wide screen monitor if media and picures if your thing. Then compliment it with a modest computer.. nforce4 board and Athlon64 3200+ or so. Get an ATI X800XL or nvidia 6800GT with 1GB OCZ ram. A nice sized HD and you'll be within yer $2000 for sure I bet...

    nForce 3 & 4

Me too. Actually... nforce 3 and 4 are good... Maybe 4 still needs to go thru a few revisions (the boards i mean) before i would trust them totally. May wanna look at a board like the Asus A8V (2000fsb). Nice board. My next board will be nforce4 for sure Jeff

Great place for Canadians to shop

Yeah I see that...$231 for the 6600GT. I didn't see that previously. Looks like they keep their online proces up to date. Mine is AGP... haven't gone up to PCIe yet... altho I hope to soon. I think I am just waiting for these boards to go thru a few revisions first. Jeff
  32. J

Great place for Canadians to shop

hehe. I have had good luck with Computrak... as for this Winterpeg store... i'll give it a try when I upgrade to PCIe. Eventually I will as soon as those nforce4's have had some burn-in time ;-) hehe. Jeff

Cool online Store. Where are they located?? I bought my 6600GT from a place in Richmond http://www.computraksystem.com/components.asp?catid=BSYS They seem to have good prices too on things. My 6600GT (Gigabyte) was $237. So, where is this place located? I can't find an address for...

I play Quake3... and not so often. I don't game much but I still upgrade all my computers regularily just to make sure everything is in good shape... like an oil change..hehehe. Especially the HD. After ya got a year or so on it... I like to replace it. Either everything gets replaced...

    New cpu and mobo

the Asus A8V is a good board too. The 939 is the best choice I believe... offereing 128 memory controller... etc. Hard to find a good board ;-) nforce3 isn't necessary tho. Or the nforce4 might be worth waiting for. Jeff

    AMD 64 build

Antec PSU is a good choice. I like the Powerneo 480W with Active PFC 3200+ is a good choice.... Asus A8V is a good board for Athlon 64... 2000FSB. Unless you wanna get an nforce4 board, that'd be good ;-) MSI is ok... check them all out first... the Asus board has lots of awards. I used to...

    PSU - any recommendations?

Try looking up the Antec Neopower 480. You'll find only good stuff about it. Jeff
  40. J

    PSU - OCZ, Enermax, Ultra

None of them. I would get the Antec Neopower 480 with Active PFC. More efficient, less harmonic noise. Jeff
