Computer beeps while in Left 4 Dead

Are you using a usb joystick/kb/mouse? If so, it is possible that whilst you are playing, you might be yanking it around too much and disconnecting it. Or, there may be a bad wire in the device.

How would you transfer eleventy billion Hi8 tapes to a hard drive...

Get a secondhand Hi8 cam with firewire. Get something like Pinnacle software, or Ulead video studio etc. Get a couple of those new big 1TB drives!!! Convert away, then edit after, then chuck the drives in the bin afterwards (or give them to me.) Bear in mind that a 45min Hi8 tape will take...

New Laptop: i need to image the HDD

Some of the hard drive manufacturers use Acronis TrueImage as their FREE cloning software. Its rebadged, but its still the same engine. Its free on their sites!!!! Just make sure you have one of their drives in your machine - doesn't have to be one that your are cloning to/from.

scanning

Yeah, OCR But I usually find it quicker to re-type a small article - By the time you've scanned, spell checked, corrected the errors (probably about 2-5% depending on the text) .............

Accidently raided a drive, is my data lost???

Did you 'wipe' it, or format? If you wiped, using, say DBAN, or something similar that overwrites data - don't waste your time trying to recover anything. If it was just formatted, you might have a chance as long as nothing else has been written to the drives. Even so, you might not get your...

Opera 8.51 Doesn't seem to be as 'holey' as Firefox (they bring out an update every few days it seems), although it could be said that because Opera doesn't update as often, it might be slightly less secure. I would defo go with Opera, but as a very close second Firefox (the latest one...

New mobo, old HDD works, still reformat?

But then again, Spending 8-12 hours reinstalling everything from scratch and getting those settings to how you like it (another 4 hours tweaking)- You'll notice a big improvement in speed and niggles that may have popped up lately will most likely disappear. Look upon it as a new start...

Reliability

I would say that a 'good' psu is probably more reliable than a piece of RAM or a CPU, just on the basis of the complicated/small structures in these items. If your PSU cost more than your RAM, then you probably have a good reliable block of capacitors etc.

I'm with you on that one. Mind you, I had roughly the same problem when i installed avg8. That is probably the only way to make it scan to the end without flagging up every little bit of whinge.

Hmmm, Just uncompressed large rar file - Avira was scanning each file - usage went upto 210MB. Don't mind that so much, but 5 minutes later and it hasn't released 165MB (avguard) that it doesn't need anymore. Waited a couple of minutes. Still at 165MB RAM usage. Decide to go to...

I take some of that back. It deleted all my recovery passwords softwares (luckily it was being run as user and couldn't delete the admin protected backups! phew ) Anyway - from now on 'exception filter' will be taken more seriously.

Building your own wind turbine - has anyone ever done it?

I can't see why you couldn't still carry on with your project. Just use smaller fins. (This is the first time I've heard complaints about there being too much wind for a wind turbine!!) Make sure you aren't putting it on top of a building. That way leads to troubles. Lots of turbulence. In...

I think you are doing the right thing. Firstly, I would start with a BIOS reset. I don't know why, but this seems to clear up quite a few random non startup issues when compared to the time it takes to try it.

Must say that today I uninstalled AVG8 and installed Antivir. No problems at all (after disabling popup) so far. And even have 20MB RAM extra to waste.

PCI slots and Onboard LAN stopped working?

Could try a BIOS reset with the power disconnected. Never know - it might work. Did you do anything to it before it stopped working? Could try booting with a live cd of KNOPPIX. You might even get to like it. I fell in luurve with it but just bring it out when I need someone to talk to!

It still could be. When you test the voltage with a 'normal' voltage tester, it gives you the average over a small period - say half a second or even a quarter. A HDD only needs a spike in voltage for a very short time to fry it. I don't think that your cheapie power/voltage testers can say...

Yeah, as the article says, DONT allow 'codecs' to download themselves. Solution - get an established codec pack like CCCP or DIVX all in one. Then miss out on the dodgy movies that insist on having a special codec.

memtest+ problem

With your first test/errors - were all the errors located in the same part of storage? Are you sure you didn't fiddle around with voltages/timings before doing the second test? If not, just remember that you have an amazing piece of electronics that you are testing - its got tiny pathways...

MX 900 (as part of the Bluetooth diNovo keyboard set) won't charge?

Sound like some solder has come loose. If you can't shake it around, try wiggling wires, and if that doesn't work - a swift clap upside the head might do it. Otherwise - you have to open it up and have a loooook for anything looooose.

New System build

From what I've read on the subject in brief - DDR3 RAM (sticks - not on vid cards) is still 'new' and as such can expect teething problems. Can't see that there is more than 1 or 2% gain either. Stick with DDR2 for now imvho.

As you read, its on its way to trying to be a successor to using BIOS and other pre- OS proggies. Enable it and see what happens. If it doesn't work, disable it. You are at the head of this new cutting edge technology. Let us know how it goes.

Risky to update BIOS with potentially faulty RAM

Have you tried those files on a different system? I can't see that a problem extracting files from RAR would mean it is the mobo. uninstall, reboot, reinstall your extracting software - Try verifying if the files are ok. Then, try a different extractor - winzip/winrar etc etc Then, try...

Firefox 3 A mixed bag

The autocomplete function can be disabled. You can download different skins if you don't like the icons. The size of the icons can be changed a little. On the whole, I still prefer Opera (I still want to pay for this beautiful piece of software)- they changed some things around in 9.5, but...

You know that you can only retrieve information from a drive that has been burnt/crashed etc. But, if you happen to have 2 years work on a drive and it decides to give the click of death, you watch those little heads go scraping over those platters so that even your $2000 recovery companies in...

HAL error on second HD

You will only need the boot files (for example NTLDR) on your active drive. Have you got your drives plugged in the right way, so that your old drive is the one that its booting from?
