My understanding of the motivation behind NV's Fermi and future product developments

Margin will be the same as what they currently get for a CPU. Yes, cost would be lower but so would revenue because they aren't selling a GPU anymore. Net result is less revenue and profit. Would it be better if I put it in a giant font size for you?

My understanding of the motivation behind NV's Fermi and future product developments

That makes no sense. Even assuming they sell more to OEMs... Today they would sell something like this in the mainstream PC segment: 1 CPU + 1 chipset + 1 mainstream discrete card or for an intel-based system just 1 discrete card Post-Fusion/Sandy Bridge they'll be selling: 1 CPU +...

My understanding of the motivation behind NV's Fermi and future product developments

Ironically, shrinking the discrete market hurts AMD as well. They're just cannibalizing their mainstream GPUs with Fusion. Now if they'd gotten Fusion out the door quicker, that might have helped them take CPU share from Intel, but Intel looks to have made some decent strides with SB so you're...

Current 120Hz monitors are 'locked out' from doing 3D on ATI hardware

2 ASUS models, 2 Toshiba models and a bunch of Clevo variants all have 120hz LCDs in a notebook form factor. And they're up to 4+ models/mfr's for 120hz LCD's for desktops at 1080p. Don't believe me - check for yourself at http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-requirements.html

Photo professional LCDs - not just about panel tech

So a $2,000 premium may actually get you a better monitor? While it isn't the case 100% of the time, I would hope so. Hardly an "Aha!" moment. There's a reason true "pro" monitors have "pro" prices. That being said, don't put too much stock in factory calibration. If you're serious about...

Getting a 13" Macbook pro, best 4gb of RAM, what 250-500GB HD, and Windows 7?

I've had no problems so far from the KTA-MB1066K2/4G 4GB Kit from Kingston and a 320GB WD WD3200BEVT Scorpio Blue HDD. Since I was going to be putting the old drive in an external anyhow, I just used the OS X drive utility to copy the original to the new drive via USB.

Nvidia + ARM in next nintendo handheld ?

You tend to notice the jaggies a bit more when you're not getting fluid frames =P I'm sure PD was "technically" a better game, but in terms of appeal and playability it really didn't do it for me. And I do remember it being THE title to show off on n64 at the time.

Anyone care to revisit an old discussion?

I'm not arguing on the relevance of the article at the time it was written, but even then, the author concedes that 4xxx hardware varies wildly in real world applications. I'm just pointing out that there hasn't been a flurry of situations since then that have contradicted that point. Note...

Anyone care to revisit an old discussion?

Pointing to a year old review doesn't really illuminate much on the amount of traction each side has been able to gain since then. "Even while staying still at 4:1 with RV770, AMD's ratio is still more aggressively geared towards compute than NVIDIA's is." This has not been borne out in...

Nvidia + ARM in next nintendo handheld ?

It's basically the same engine and aside from a few performance issues, it only adds some minimal features such as dolby audio features that weren't in the original Rare engine. Overall the gameplay and engine are similar. I don't remember playing Perfect Dark more than Golden Eye - that's for...

Anyone care to revisit an old discussion?

Theoretical performance has always favored AMD if you believe the marketing slides. However, there's plenty of examples where this theoretical performance still hasn't been realized - care to ask F@H 4xxx card owners? Or how about where high performance (read: speed) is realized but output was...

    Nvidia for Better Or Worse

I'd disagree a bit here. Open Standards can be useful, but they hardly drive innovation when a technology is in its infancy. Oftentimes, proprietary solutions are what advance the industry because the competition has to play catch up and most companies bring new tech to market in the hopes they...

Yes, SLI has supported dual monitor since the v180.x driver release in Vista and Win7. You're able to set the target monitor for SLI in 3D mode in the control panel. No toggling - it happens on the fly.. It's possible the second screen will go black while running a full screen game on the...

Nvidia: DirectX 11 Will Not Catalyze Sales of Graphics Cards

Umm, actually they don't. DirectCompute in Windows 7 is not tied to DX11 hardware. NVIDIA's DX10 parts already support the compute function. CUDA has already been doing "compute" - DirectCompute and OpenCL only add to the programming options you have for GPU computing.

Are you going to build an Eyefinity setup?

    Price cuts for 4800 series

You would think so, but the lack of crossfire profiles and support for titles at launch makes this somewhat of PR spin at best. If you can't afford to invest in a larger more powerful chip, your "strategy" is to build smaller ones by default (if you have half a brain). If you haven't had the...

question about running PhysX in a mixed card config

Depends on a few things. First, what card do you have now or what were you looking to purchase? 9800GTX is slightly overkill if all you plan to use it for is as a dedicated PhysX card. Also, down the road you'd have to be using XP or Windows 7 if you wanted to dedicate that card to PhysX but...
