It seems to be a common theme with this board that you can't run anything besides the 1002 BIOS if you are going to use Maxtor Diamondmask 10 SATA drives, RAID or otherwise. And definitely don't turn on NCQ!

Oh, I can guarantee it's dead. Makes a nice clicking sound. I plugged it into another PC and it wouldn't boot.
When I pulled it out of the case, the drive was pretty hot to the touch.
I didn't have NCQ turned on. I was running 1003-006 with the default selections when the drive died...
Well, now the Maxtor Diamondmax 10 sata-2 drive is dead. I had a lot of data on it. Not happy. This mobo killed it.
DON'T USE THE BETA BIOS's with Maxtor Diamondmax drives!
My mobo lost the Maxtor SATA-2 drive today. Tried it in all the other ports. Won't boot. Tried another cable. Won't boot.
Good thing I ordered a replacement and I'm sending this one back. I had upgraded the bios to 1003-006 and downgraded it back to 1002 after it lost the SATA-2 drive.
OK, here's a status update. Memtest passed all tests. Nothing wrong with the memory.
So, I unplugged everything but the boot drive. It booted fine. Next I plugged in the cdroms. Booted ok. Plugged in the WD IDE drive. Booted ok.
Plugged in the Maxtor SATA-2 drive. NOTHING. Ah...

I upgraded my power supply to a new Thermaltake 680w PSU. Very nice. Highly recommend it. Didn't fix the problem with the firewire ports, but system seems to be stable.
I'm using a Thermaltake 420w PS. I'm wondering if that's enough for everything I have in the box. I'll pick up bigger PS and see if that makes a difference.

Everytime I try to change the memory timings, I get the hard drive corruption issues as well as the inability to see the IDE primary channel. This is my 2nd A8N-SLI deluxe board. Rev 1.02.
Running the 1002 BIOS, I thought I would give the AI NOS a try. Lock up city. Couldn't get into Windows. Nothing until I changed the BIOS settings back to default.
I'm guessing it was the PCI lock problem.

I'm using the Hitachi 160gb IDE drive for my boot drive. While not as fast as the Maxtor drive, i'm saving the space on the Maxtor for video production. I'm going to get another 300gb Maxtor this summer so I can capture video to one of them and output the dvd images to the other using Pinnacle...

Ok, downgraded to 1003-004 and the SATA scores in HD_Speed are the same.
I noticed in the Hardware Manager under the controllers that there is a speed test there and the SATA drive burst speed shows 120+ mb/s. Odd.....
I tried the new beta bios 1003-005 and now my SATA drive is slower than it was before. About 4x times slower. I'm using HD_Speed to benchmark and I used to see 120mb/s or so in burst mode. Now I'm seeing 36mb/s. Not good. Other than that, everything appears to be working normally.
