Connect computer wizard (SBS 2k8) often missing user profiles, have tried usual suspe

We're moving from a workgroup-based network to a new SBS 2k8 (latest rollup) server-based network. Everything has been going fairly smoothly, but now I'm starting to run into issues with the connect computer "wizard" (reached at http://connect). On random machines (about 50%), both Win7 and...

    Saving display profile / settings?

I have a super-hacky "docking" setup for my Acer Timeline 4810TZ (SU7300 / X4500) laptop. I plug in both the external VGA, and a Displaylink USB adapter, to external dual monitors. Once I plug these in, the Displaylink defaults to mirroring the external VGA monitor, and I have to reconfigure to...

Good online computer parts store that will charge WA sales tax?

Because I have to make a large purchase, need to be compliant, and don't want to take the extra step of reporting a purchase to the state, I need to find a great online computer parts store (a la Newegg) that charges WA state sales tax. Any suggestions? Amazon is too fragmented... Fry's...

    Win 2k8 RRAS Question

So, after turning off the active directory user's automatic static route, and adding the route manually: route add 192.168.91.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.91 Everything works fine. However, the same route seems to be added as as added automatically by the AD configuration. Strange. Anyone...

Just to confirm, default gateway on site1 network is site1 router, so there's no route problem on that side (as shown by pings going out but never coming back).

I'd trying to setup our Win 2K8 R2 as a site-to-site RRAS server. Here is the current configuration: HQ (192.168.0.x/24): -Server 192.168.0.20 -Server's RRAS virtual interface 192.168.0.103 -User "site1" is assigned a static dial-in IP of 192.168.0.91, and a static dial-in route for...

    DDR3 ECC in non-ECC P55 motherboard?

I have a P55 motherboard which does not purport to support ECC DDR3 (I certainly didn't expect it to), but I'm finding that 4GB DDR3 modules are much cheaper in ECC form: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134978. Will these modules work in a standard P55 mobo w/ i7-860?

Replacing 8000N, need printer w/ 8 output trays for users, don't see much around...

Hope this is of some use to folks - we went with Lexmark. Their T6xx line has 5-bin mailboxes, with stackability to 10 total bins (possibly more). Also much cheaper than the HP 9040, with similar cost per page and reliability records.

Hrm, that's helpful. A business class machine is fine. $2k would be fine. $3k would be fine. Anything above that is pushing it!

Replacing 8000N, need printer w/ 8 output trays for users, don't see much around...

Our office has been using an HP 8000N for some time now, and really likes the 8 "mailbins", which are output trays for print jobs, based on originating user or IP address. The printer's getting a little long in the tooth, but I can't seem to find a reasonably priced alternative which has this...

    ISCSI performance hit

The additional latency introduced from iSCSI processing and data propagation over the network are to blame. It would be less pronounced if disk latency was higher (say, with a traditional hard drive), but when it's .01 ms, it's quite noticeable. You'll still get very good performance, though...

    Reasonable 4GB+ SLC thumb drive

eSATA vs USB has no correlation with drive MTBF, it is the quality of wear leveling algorithms and the type of flash for a solid state disk. Why do I want them to last 5+ yrs? Because that will be the service cycle of these servers, and I don't care if they are "obsolete". Performance of...

    Reasonable 4GB+ SLC thumb drive

We boot some of our servers from USB keys. Although most logging/writing is done to a RAM drive and committed every hour or two, I'd still feel better knowing I have a high-quality SLC thumb drive that will last 5+ yrs as a boot drive for these servers. Anyone know of a good 4gb+ thumb drive...

    12V droop when running Furmark?

I've been running some tests on this new rig, and I notice something disconcerting in SpeedFan: When running Furmark to stress-test my video card, my 12V reported voltage drops from 11.98V to 11.52V. I bought this power supply on the recommendation of a friend, and it exceeds the specs...
