How much have you got to spend? A good solid setup is:

Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 SATA II drive
Also I would go for Raid 5 and not Raid 1 if you can afford the extra cash.
SSD are not worth wasting time looking at. A dedicated...
Just as a test I disconnected the PC from the router to linked it directly into the cable modem. Too be honest I couldn?t say if it made any noticeable difference or not, it was still really slow.
KAPPO?.I do appreciate that these things are not simple but at the end of the day they must be...
I have turned off the firewall and it still downloads at 2 - 3 K/bs per second. It must be because everyone else is downloading at the moment. Anyway I found it a fileplanet so at least I can get it done now before I have to go Christmas shopping!!!!
Blizzard, not that you give a $h!t but...
Thanks rstove02. Will give it a try.
What really gets me is that these companies take our money and don't care about the service they provide. They are supposed to be professional developers and they think that this sort of performance is acceptable.
The communications industry is moving...
Well just who came up with this P2P download idea? What a load of Bull $h!t that is. I have a 3 Meg broadband link which I pay good money for and when downloading from a good site I can get about 370M/bs per second or 1 Mb in 3 seconds or 20 M/Bs per minute. World of Warcraft patch came out...
Thats a pity as I have a copy of Win 2000 Pro that I don't use anymore. Where did you get the info by the way as I cant remember where I saw it
I recently read an article that suggested that Microsoft were going to offer a free upgrade/trade in for their new 64 bit Windows XP. Has anyone else heard about this and does anyone know what you will be allowed to trade in. I assume it's for Win XP Professional only, but what about Win 2000...
A DSL modem connects to one line, if you want to connect a second PC without using a router then you will need a second DSL modem connecting to a second and different line which will mean a second account. This is not the way to do it unless you have a unique reason. The best way is the router...
Your DSL router has a built in 4 port switch so connect both PC's into 2 of the ports. If cabling is an issue then you could buy a wirless Access Point and a wireless network card, both of which are really cheap these days. Connect the wireless access point into one of the spare ports of the...
Can anyone recommend a site that explains in reasonable detail the specs and tech details of memory. Also the priciples of over clocking memory would be good as well.
I had a Dell Deminsion and I changed the hard drive and re loaded windows XP with no problems. Also did the same with my old Latitude C600. In fact as I recall it never even asked for me to activate Windows.
Unless you are having problems or need the BIOS update for something specific then I would strongly recommend that you DONT mess with the BIOS.
Updates are always good to have so spend some time reading the web site and make absolutely sure you understand what you are doing before you go...
I've got the Creative 7.1 speaker system and its really good. I run it on a Creative Audigy 2 with direct 7.1 connection and it works really well with FPS games. The speaker sub woofer box has a switch to down mix to 5.1 so you will still get the benefit from the 2 extra speakers and you...
I had exactly the same thing happen to me last weekend on my laptop (Win XP Pro). It would start to boot, get to the windows screen then pause for about 15 seconds and then reboot. I initially though it was a hardware problem which was ok as the laptop is still under warranty. I kept powering...
I've been planning to upgrade as my rig was built in 02!!!!
Cant make my mind up as there are so many developments coming along soon. The more you research things the more you want to wait until the next bit of 'Vapour Ware' comes out and you end up getting nothing...
To cause an arc like that you must have had a major short circuit. My view is that possibly the memory modules slipped and shorted on the mobo somewhere but I can?t think of anywhere that is exposed enough carrying that kind of current.
I reckon it must be a PSU problem. I recall when I was...
Thanks for all the comments.
With regard to going RAID 0, I like the idea of having two disks being seen as one drive, in this case 'D' drive instead of having a 'D' and 'E' drive. Small point really but something I like. I have a RAID 0 setup on a separate PC and I find it convenient...
I can't see how that is normal and that would drive me nuts. Maybe they are depression marks from the packaging but if you are not happy then send them back pronto.
My idea for the RAID was to get a second Hitachi and have them in a RAID 0 format and just have a single Raptor for Windows. I have a very large collection of Home Movies and edit and burn for some friends as well. I also enjoy playing some games so I really need an all round performance system.
Has anyone had any 'Real World' experiece of running Windows on its own dedicated hard drive. I was thinking about putting Windows on a fast Raptor drive and set up a large 400Gb hitachi for apps and data etc.
Is there any performance gain to be had that would be worth the effort and...
Just got this from Intel....
SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 8, 2005 - Intel Corporation today announced it has been working closely with game developers on threading their games and has expanded seeding of its dual-core-based software development platforms. These efforts will fuel gaming...
If this thing does what it says then it should be made available to those who want it... simple as that.
How it's implemented will be determined by market forces... again as simple as that.
The development path and future integration options, either stand alone, integrated into 'whatever'...
Not sure if you have done this but go to the Kingston Web site and do a Memory Search. You can enter your Intel Montherboard part number and it will give you all of the authorized Kingston parts. I had a similar problem, it turned out my kingston memory was not compatible, changed it and all...
The sony was only 24x cd if I recall which is not excessive. I work my systems hard and now wondering if they could be running over temp. I use a Thermaltake with 6 fans but maybe thats not enough. Do these things become brittle with excess heat?
When I contacted EA ,I asked them if they get many people asking for replacement discs. They said no but I cant believe this is only happening to me. I run them in DVD drives which don't spin as fast as CD drives. I hope Blue Ray discs are stronger assuming the drives spin faster.
I seem to be having more and more CD's these days splitting from the center hole. I even had one explode in my DVD drive destroying it completely :Q
Has anyone else noticed this, I just wondered if they were being made to a lower (cheaper) spec these days.
Was surfing last night and came across in interesting statistic...
99% of those people who claim to have been abducted by aliens also believe in God..
What does that tell you!!! Oh just a thought, maybe its god trying to say Hi and thanks for your donations!
I agree that at this point in time having a 150MB/s or 300MB/s SATA II drive is academic. However, the drive you buy will still be good for years to come (I still have my original IBM AT with a 30 MB HDD) and the PC still works perfectly well. So I would advise buying the 300 MB/s as who knows...
Read the specs on devices. The Seagate is still only a 150MB/s (Max) transfer rate drive.
http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/index
Wait till the new 300MB/s devices start to ship, at least you will have a drive that will be future proofed for a while!
These discussions prove one thing

Stop with this and get a life! Your born, you live, you die! Thats it. If you need a comfort blanket to help you through your life then thats fine, not everyone is as capable as the next...
Think you will find that the Raptor is still only 150MB/s (max) and not fully SATA II. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=40
The only SATA II drives I have seen that are 300MB/s are from Hitachi such as the Deskstar T7K250.
Also I have not seen any third party controllers...
I have an Audigy 2 ZS sound card in my system. My case is a Thermaltake with additional connectors built in for things such as Firewire, USB. Microphone, headphones etc etc?. you know what I mean! I have found all the jumpers and headers on the motherboard for all but the sound stuff...
