I'm building a PC using MSI NForce4 Ultra MB (non-SLI) which uses the 24 pin power connector. My PSU is an Antec truepower 430 which is a 20 pin. I've read that this works okay but that the last 4 pins that are for PCI Express won't be powered. So if the video card lacks a molex and the PSU...
I see your using a 6800 gt. What a waste of power. It can play most games at 1600x1200, something your 17 or even 19" lcd monitor can't. If your looking at LCDs then spend more and get one that supports this resolution.
Hard OCP is very pleased with their MSI SLI board. Best OCin they have ever seen if your into that sort of thing.

Oh, and Bukka, I'm not ignoring your problem. Since I don't even have a vid card I can't even turn mine on. Just have to sit there and imagine how great it will be once turned on. Assuming you can get to the BIOS, play around with the memory settings. Latency and Voltage, etc. You can always go...
HardOCP is raving about the SLI version and how good it overclocks. Something to look forward to after I get my X800xl. LOL. Probably not before March something I would guess. Anyway, I noticed the SLI version has a better NB fan and a mosfets cooler. How can I get those for my ultra?
Slikkster, thanks for the info. Now if I could just ID which are the 10 pins and what their numbers are. It's not printed on the board and there are more than 10 pins coming from the back of the board. Thanks again.
I have an antec p160 case with an audio out on the front. Can I plug it directly into my Audigy2ZS? If so, can someone point me toward a pinout as the users manual is no help. Can't find anything on the website either.
Thanks!
Thought I was. I'll try it again when I install on the new system. Maybe use the Win 64 OS as a backup. If that doesn't work then I'll have to get a full install XP.
Thanks for all of the helpful answers.
I've reinstalled it before on my current system, trying to use the XP disc only but it refuses. It exits and says I must install Win 98 first. Maybe it's the version I have.
I bought an MSI nforce4 MB and I want to install Win XP on it. The problem is, it's an upgrade from Win 98. I would have to install Win 98 first. Not sure if this is a problem but since things like SATA are not even supported on Win 98, as far as I know, I figure there are going to be many...
When I went to the website to check it out there was a link saying if I wanted to get an extra $30 off, all I had to do was sign up for their Visa card. I filled out a form, clicked submit and was instantly approved. I then used my new account to buy the HSF. I guess it helped that I had made a...
Not trying to muddy the water here but I emailed Antec about using the 430 true power on an nforce4 motherboard with 24 pins. BTW, I'm not even wanting to do SLI, I am going to buy the Ultra version. Here is what she said: We do not recommend using the 430 tp on a PCI express motherboard. You...
I agree with the person that said it's not really that much more for an SLI. For most it's not a deal breaker. What kind a made me decide against SLI though was what 2 different people pointed out about the upgrading your vid card path.
One person pointed out that if you only upgrade every...
Thanks. Thought it might be a technical question is why I posted here. Your right about the IN/OUT I guess. But it's touted as the major advantage of PCI-E over AGP. Says each way is 4 Gigabytes for a total of 8 which sounds like a huge advantage which future video cards will be able to use.
In the process of building a new PC and I can't seem to decide on which video card to pick and here's why.
Current video cards are all based on AGP designs and only transfer data one way at a time. I figure there will will be video cards coming out in the next year that can take advantage of...
Sorry you took offense. Please post a link to this wonderous device aeternitas. Oh, and don't forget that it needs to achieve 1600x1200, have a response time < 25ms. This guy was asking about a CRT. He didn't need you opinion AND try to watch your fingers.
Also look at the Viewsonic G90fb, around $200. That way you could play games at 1600x1200. A 19 in LCD would cost a lot more but only has a native resolution of 1280X1024. People with LCDs act like they are so cool and anyone who buys a CRT is so yesterday. Until the prices come down, the...
I had a top of line MS explorer which crapped out. I told them the model number over the phone. They sent a new one but not the right model, almost as good but next one down. I called back to ask them what to do. They told me to keep the mistake and they sent me the right one. So MS customer...
I noticed the the Gigabyte has Dual Power System and MSI has VPower. Both appear to improve the stability of power coming into the board. The Asus doesn't seem to have anything. Does anyone know if this is a big deal or not. Would a good PSU do the same thing? Is it more important if your using SLI?
Thanks for all the input. I'm not in a real hurry since I'm waiting for more of the NForce4 boards to hit the market. Like ty1er said, if I shop around I can find a retail closer in price to the OEM but if not then I won't feel like I'm getting an inferior product.
Thanks for the quick reply. Let me know where the difference is $5 though. PriceWatch difference is $21. Still not a deal breaker for a longer warranty.
I've read a couple of articles about this card and they say how well it compares to the 6800GT for around $300. I can't find it anywhere near that price. Am I looking in the wrong place?
Someone mentioned the 6 phase system on the Gigabyte. Here's the quote from the website:
"Dual Power System
Along with enhanced performance is additional system stability with the GIGABYTE Dual Power System (D.P.S.). D.P.S. is a revolutionary six-phase power circuit designed to withstand...
How about a couple of Seagate SATA Barracuda 80 gig HDs in Raid0? Will still cost less than the WD and give about the same 4.5 ms access time. The Seagates have NCQ which is supported on the new NForce4 MBs.
There's an article I read recently which did a review of the effects of Raid 0 on...
I'm curious why you ruled out an Audigy. Price, drivers? Did you check to see which has the lowest CPU usage of the two you mention? Maybe not a concern if you don't play games though.
