Thanks aigo! We just got the case in, a custom U2-UFO from mountain mods so finally starting to plan out the loop. Probably going to start in the "back" half of the case with the res/pump/1st rad all together at the 3 rear exhaust fan mounts, then go over the mobo to the cpu, down to the NB...

So a friend of mine is putting together a crazy custom water loop, though it's his first, and I'm trying to help him out with what little I know. What do I know? Not nearly enough... time to ask the experts! He wants to do what sounds backwards to me... which is setup the loop with the rads...

Fan conroller question

I agree with mfenn. I haven't used a fan controller in my last two builds. I use a combo of Scythe SFLEX 21Fs which are dead silent at 100% (1600rpm, 64CFM) and some higher-power fans that my BIOS manages pretty well. Manual options for 50-100%, as well as an auto which I don't use. Overall...

Is SATA hot swappable?

Yes USB is hot swappable, but USB storage devices tend to be detected as just that; "removable disk/storage" as windows like to call it. I'm not sure if this will invoke the correct protocol for the disk to be detected as a hard drive by the SATA controller. Not to mention caching options...

Is SATA hot swappable?

As dac7nco said, it depends on the motherboard, or more specifically the chipset. Also, though SATA2 controllers support hot-swap I don't think this will function via a USB adapter. I think it only works over SATA/eSATA ports.

GTX 280 or X1950PRO

Actually the previous flagships to the 280 were the 9800GTX and 9800GX2. As an owner of a 280 up until recently, I'd defo get another. It was still taking everything at max settings 1900x1200 without too much sweat.

Q6600 overclocking

Sorry to chime in so late! This reminds me a lot of my own chip. My chip will do 6x400 at stock (board default 1.25), 7x400 at 1.3125, and needs 1.42v to run 8x400. That's with LLC, without I was using 1.5125 for 100% stability @ 3.2Ghz. My chip won't do 3.6, I'm not happy pushing the...

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts. I suddenly have a need for some TIM and I've just realized the half-used tube of AS5 I have lying around with my supplies is like.... 4 or 5 years old. It should still be good right? I mean the cured version works fine for years under heatsinks around...

Rainbow pixels = EOL?

So I got a 470 for my 280. Mixed feeling on that. I know I get DX11 and a newer chip, but a more cut down chip. The theoretical texture and memory bandwidth is actually down from the 280. Off to test some games!

Bad idea to force graphics card out of slot?

I had the same experience with my 280 yesterday. It's died on me so I went to rip it out, and I instinctively pushed down on that little clip and pulled the card out. To my dismay, I then realized my mobo you pull the clip up to release. All I managed to do by pushing it down was getting it...

Well it's still happening, but I've been spending so much time at work I haven't tinkered much. I just can't get through my head why if it's a hardware problem it seems to go away (at least for one boot cycle) by reinstalling the driver.

So after last night I shut off my pc and went to bed. Got home from work tonight and it's back to square one. Passed windows loading screen, logo flashes, then greeted by rainbow pixels on both monitors instead of my desktop. Derp. Restarted; same problem! Booted into safe mode, ran ccleaner...

So I was playing FSX last night, which crashed (but thats another story = P) so I decided to watch an HD copy of Star Wars. Shut off my PC and went to bed. Go to turn it on this morning, locks on booting windows.. orange main monitor, solid white secondary. Restarted --> Rainbow pixels both...

i5 2500k gene-z mobo overclocking (a50 heatsink)

You should be able to take the Vcore up to 1.3 or 1.35 safely with no worries. That should get you into the 4.2-4.6 range depending on your chip. Just watch the temps and test stability. Turbo gets kind of tricky to tune at this level of OC though.

Real World Performance 2600k @ 3.8Ghz CPU rendering times!

1.3v is awefully high for only 3.8Ghz. Should be able to get at least 4.2 or around that with 1.3-1.35.

Having a Hard Time!

I'd say you can expect piss-poor gaming performance on that 5570. It's not a 5770, which would perfom much better. I'd say if you plan on playing modern games like Skyrim @ 1440x900 with some candy, best to get the 460 for $130. That is a really good value deal.

100% agree with Plimogz on all of his points. You can find a 460 on sale for really cheap some times, just watch out for the SE version; it has a significantly cut down core.

GTX260 Sli or one GTX560?

I'd also vote one 560 > 260 SLI. If you can afford to wait, that is what I'd suggest. I'm still quite happy with my 280. There isn't much it has a hard time with. However if you need a cheap fill in; I'd go with the "sell the 260, get a 560" advice.

6770 and PSU?

Yeah if you could give us the make and model of the PSU we could tell you for sure, but as long as it is a quality unit you are most likely fine. For example, I'd go as far as saying a solid 450 Antec Earthwatts, a quaility unit, is fine, where as some crap Rosewill 550/600 I might question.

Most recent or patched (like WoW) can execute code on as many cores that are available. As to if this increases performance, ie if 6 cores are any better than 4, is the real question. A decently clocked quad core should not impeed performance at all in WoW, which is why most people dont...

Old Raptor vs New Drives?

I doubt that very much, even a vertex 3 on SATA3 should write at over 150mbps, closer to 220 actually. An M4/Intel 500 which handles incompressable data a bit better should do up to 300mbps. I doubt the Vraptor has that kind of throughput. No HDD does. See 2nd chart here...

another new Z68 build question

It is tricky to set up, but I would allocate the max cache of 20GB, then partion the rest as a new drive and install ur OS and basic/most common apps on it. Then install all major programs/games on the WD drive /w SRT.

Strange reboots / data losses

If the board "forgets" the BIOS setting it could be power related? Is the date/time correct when this happens? If not, then the MB battery needs to be changed. If it does have the correct date/time then that idea is null/void. BTW I also have a P5K Wifi in one of my other systems. It doesn't...
