Most affordable family vehicle with AWD/4x4?

A Highlander is definitely worth looking at. A Kia Sorento as well since it has a 100,000 mile power train warrenty.

Does anyone know the V6 direct injection engine KIA uses for the Sorento has issues with carbon build up on the intake valves? I'm considering purchasing one and wanted to know if this was still a problem with direct injection in general?

Recommend me an inexpensive, reliable AWD vehicle

Get a Subaru. Their whole reputation is based on AWD. An Impreza (Outback Sport), Outback or Forrester will serve you well in winder conditions. Regardless of what you get, put snow tiers on.
