I used Basilisk II to play Escape Velocity on my 500 mhz laptop. It worked well.
I've read that if your a professional there is no replacement for PS, but if your not that hard core I don't think it makes much difference which one you use.... O ya one is free.
You can't just copy all of the files over because just copying the files over wont make it bootable. You will have to use partition app to do this. Knoppix may come with a tool to do this.

I had all kinds of sutter problems on my p4 2.6/800fsb with 256mb ram and 5900xt but I upgraded to 512MB of ram and it almost stoped all shuttering. Then a few days ago Half life 2 was updated and now I've had one very slight shutter ( basicaly just a sound glitch for 0.4 seconds ) in over 4...
Why not just use Gaim, it runs on every os under the sun, its GPLed, has no ads, and has a bunch of cool plugins. Its can be used with AIM, ICQ, Gadu-Gadu, GroupWise, IRC, Jabber, MSN, Napster, Yahoo, and Zephyr.

The BFG on woot is overclocked a few mhz above the stock 5900xt out of the box and I get acceptable fps on my stock 5900xt playing hl2. So I wouldn't worry about bios flashing just yet, in a few months you won't feel so bad if things go wrong because you will have made a cool $60 paper weight...

I got two of these at compuseless. Got them set up in a raid, not to loud sounding, 8mb cache, very nice drives. You can only get one per customer, so get a friend to buy a second one for you ;-)
