    Freeware programs and applications

Smoothwall is downloadable as an ISO. My friend (who is not very Linux-savvy) set his up in almost no time. If you don't like to tinker with Unix/Unix-like operating systems, stay far, far away from OpenBSD. However, it is one of the most secure operating systems in the world (though this...

    Freeware programs and applications

Also good is Smoothwall (Linux distro based) and OpenBSD. I have used OpenBSD 2.9 as a software firewall for quite some time. I use different iprules for different games. All I have to do is change the alias to the iprules for the game in question and restart the daemon. :D

Aquarius III "almost" destroyed my pc.

If something's not right with a brand new product, bring it back! The amount of time you think you are saving by not getting it right the first time can destroy your components or lose time later!

Asus P4P800 SE ................. Is it a good board?

I built my wife a system around this board. Very solid. She has a 3.2 GHz Intel in it with Corsair TwinX (2x512) DDR. Turning on the Turbo mode in the BIOS resulted in 2-2-2-6 memory timings!

    A7V, need new case/CPU cooler

I know I can run a different processor in this motherboard. However, I just want to stick with what I have. Once I start adding hardware to this (other than a case) then I will just be buying a nano-ITX board. ;)

    A7V, need new case/CPU cooler

Thanks for the recommendation of the Thermalright! As far as the case, I don't really like most of the cases I see for HTPC applications, and I am not sure about the cooling of all that hot air that a Thunderbird produces... :(

    A7V, need new case/CPU cooler

Okay, my rig's in the sig and I am building a new computer this weekend (hopefully). My A7V will be retired to the living room as a media center. My current Antec case is huge and is insufficient in the cooling department (49/39 idle 62/50 under load). The cooling of the case is now complimented...

    AMD64 Rev E and mobo's

Venice will most probably run in all the 939 motherboards with no more than a BIOS patch, if even that. It's still a 939 pin chip. The problem will be next year when AMD is rumored to add DDR2 to the dual-core Athlons. This will necessitate a new processor socket because the Athlons currently...

AMD Nforce4 Motherboard help! Or maybe go Intel

I see no point in paying extra to pick up an SLI board when I have no need nor no desire to go SLI. I don't need to reward nVidia's SLI logo program because the motherboard manufacturer that I like the most can't get their s--- together and produce a non-SLI motherboard with the nForce4 chipset...

AMD Nforce4 Motherboard help! Or maybe go Intel

I, like you, have been waiting for nForce4 and KT890 to not be so problematic. Like you, I have also chosen to go the Intel route. What I'm getting: ASUS P5GD1 (Intel 915 chipset, 800 MHz FSB, DDR support only) Intel 3.2 GHz 2 MB cache EM64T chip 2x512 MB Corsair TwinX DDR400 PC-3200 RAM...

    ASUS A8n-e Premium NForce 4

If the GA means GigaByte, I would avoid it. I buy ASUS for a reason and that's because I've never had an ASUS board eff up on me, unlike GigaByte.

A8N-SLI Nvidia raid vs silicon image raid

More than likely, you are experiencing Windows XP's <sarcastic>wonderful</sarcastic> fastfind utility.

    GA-K8NF-9 or A8V-E Deluxe

I would normally recommend an ASUS over any GigaByte board but in this case I can't recommend the ASUS. There are only two SATA ports on it (with motherboard pinouts for at least three more) and an active cooler on the chipset.

    ASUS A8n-e Premium NForce 4

The two SATA ports was a deal breaker for me too. I have only seen one review on it (gamerpc.com) and the nForce4 had better benches and a far better feature set for the same price. I really wanted to stay with ASUS for an AMD build but the lack of an nForce4 non-SLI solution and a sub-standard...

Been using my TT Tsunami for a week...

I've never had a problem with the retention clips. However, now that I shoved two more hard drives into it last night, I will say that the hard drive bay is rather flimsy. I'm glad that I don't add and remove hard drives very often. Now that I have two more hard drives in the machine, the...

Been using my TT Tsunami for a week...

Okay, this has been my wife's case for the past month or so. I am planning on getting one for myself as it's a good case for the money. My question: Has anyone removed the top pod and replaced it with a fan? Even though it has two 120mm fans and the side mounted 90mm, I'd really like to put a...

    AMD or Pentium

My buddy's new 3.4F Intel does the same thing (running HL2 at 1280x1024 4xaa on Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition RC2 with 66.96 drivers), so it's not that it's beyond the card. I will agree that AMDs have the lead in gaming performance and the FX-55 and 4000+ pretty much leave the...

Been using my TT Tsunami for a week...

My wife's new case is the Tsunami. Neither the front nor back fan breaks 1000 rpm. The only way I know the computer is on is by the glowing LEDs on the front and the glowing 120mm fan in the back. All fans in the case are stock. Power supply is the NeoPower 480. From all I have read DO NOT get...

No more thinking, just tell me what 20" lcd panel to buy

Samsung now offers their LCDs with a 0 pixel dead policy. I prefer ViewSonic over Samsung, but until all the LCD manufacturers change their dead pixel policy it will be Samsung all the way for me...

    6600GT AGP vs PCIe

ATI generally does better at HL2 than nVidia cards. My buddy bought a 6600GT and put it into a new 3.4 GHz (64-bit) Intel system. He's been playing HL2 with all settings turned to highest levels at 1600x1200 with no issues whatsoever. He does NOT have AA/AF enabled, so if you must play HL2 with...

    What's wrong with Thermaltake?

I'm 38 and just bought my wife the Tsunami case after telling her that that's the one wrapping my new computer. So, here's someone in the "older" generation who likes the Tsunami as well. Oh, and her temps dropped 10 c as soon as we got her system into the new case. Not bad for a supposed...

    VERY budget video card recommendations

I would second the recommendation of the 8500 (my wife's old computer had one) except that my own Ti4200 beat the Radeon 8500 in every single game with the exception of Need for Speed Underground 2. In Battlefield 1942 with the Desert Combat final mod, I had the Radeon turned down to...

By "light-gaming", what games are we talking about? I saw a pretty big jump in my playing speed when I went from the GF3 line to the GF4 line.

    VERY budget video card recommendations

Both the NV40 and NV41 are 6800s. The NV40 is a 16/6 (16 pixel pipeline with 6 vertex shaders) card and the NV41 is a 12/5 (12 pixel pipeline with 5 vertex shaders). Both the NV40 and NV41 cores were used in the production of the vanilla 6800 cards; in the case of the NV40, one quad (4 of the 16...

    VERY budget video card recommendations

I don't know this off-hand. Maybe someone else can answer this? There isn't that huge of a jump from AGP 4x to AGP 8x. Most games don't even take advantage of the full 8x anyway. It will depend more on your system specs.

    VERY budget video card recommendations

When you use the registry entry to prevent kernel swapping, a default run of Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4 takes up 92 MB (no programs loaded other than Windows). The only reason I upgraded from 256 MB RAM to 512 MB RAM was because the Desert Combat mod to Battlefield 1942 is so...
