The cheap SSDs thread

Inland pro series 120 & 240. Think these are Microcenter's inhouse brand. Price does not seem to bad at 25.99 for 120 & 45.99 for 240. Not sure if it a sale price or normal. I grabbed 2 240's the other day still waiting for arrival...

Cheapest "PC on a stick"?

Those look really cool, cannot believe how small a full computing device has become. So all one really needs is a usb power source, would something like a usb wall charger work as a power source? I would hate to see the space left over on the 16gb model after win 8.1 was installed. lol

You may have already tried, but to set your homepage, and search settings use the Desktop IE not metro. You should also be able to get rid of the Bing search addon in the Desktop IE in the manage addon's.

Update 5 yr old laptop vs new?

It will do 4gb no problem, many confirmed cases running 4gb. There are some 8 gb reports also but 4 should be more than enough in this case. Latest or last BIOS should be used also from what I can find.

Sounds like you might have a drive going south. Should be good to go with the ATI card. Personally I would not bother with XP at this time, it has a little bit of life left but it's EOL is rapidly approaching. Win 7 or 8, 8.1really has so many benefits plus future proofing over xp. A tl-64...

Is my laptop on its' death bed?

Try hooking up an external monitor and see if the problem follows, if it does it is more than likely a gpu issue. If it does not follow then probably the first thing I would check is the cable from the MB to the LCD.

Transformer Prime as replacement for netbook/daily-use machine?

Might be advantageous to wait for the Surface pro, since it will be considered a computer, running windows 8. Even though I have a prime and really like it, it is no substitute for a computer.

X9100 or T9900 are the best bets for that Gateway FX listed in your link. The X9100 can be oc'ed using ThrottleStop the T9900 cannot.

older HP d v6 (dv6910us) cd/dvd issue

No, cannot boot from the drive either. I can hear it try to spin up and the light will flicker but that is about it. I am not seeing it in BIOS either. When booting and choosing boot options it will not show me an option to boot from the cd/dvd either. I'm assuming a dead drive vs bad interface.

Slammy thanks much for the suggestion, but i'm not sure I can master/slave with the drive because it is a laptop drive. I should have mentioned that in my original post, but I will look in the BIOS regardless.

just got my X120e and wow its nice.

As well as the BIOS option to switch the Fn & ctrl keys you can also pop those 2 keys and switch them to match the BIOS option.

Replacing a CD/DVD drive in laptop

Not sure which ze model your working on but I did find a pdf for a ze4900 http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00374392.pdf that shows how to replace the optical drive. Basically the keyboard has to be removed then there a 2 screws that hold the optical drive in place. Page 113 of the pdf...

Shouldn't but is a safe approach Not that I have found. In an IDE/PATA drive configuration I would also do the same except I would keep both drives as primary I would put the Win7 drive back whwere it was (most likely channel 1) then put the XP drive on channel 2. No master/slave.

yes have done this many times with no issues. One thing I always do is only have the one drive installed in the machine that I want to install the os on, then once the install is complete and fully functional I put the other drive back in. So in this case I would remove the Win7 drive then...

or another option is using a 2nd HDD installing xp on it then use the BIOS boot option to select the drive you want to boot from. This way the vista boot manager is not used.
